SUPERGIRL Movie Will Reportedly Begin Filming Early 2020 With 2021 Release Date Likely

Supergirl has experienced a surge in following due to the popularity of the Melissa Benoist-led series and now, Warner Bros. is expected to begin filming their rumored live-action movie in early 2020.

It is an exciting time for superhero films and female representation. If all goes as expected, all major MCU and DCEU offerings will be headed by females. Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, Black Widow, Falcon & The Winter Soldier and The Eternals are all being directed by women. During that year, it seems as though Supergirl will be shooting in front of cameras as well.

According to Forbes, Supergirl will be starting production during the first quarter of 2020 alongside Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's The Batman. Furthermore, casting for Kara Zor-El should be revealed in the coming months. This makes a 2021 release date, similar to The Batman, very likely.

Not many details are known about the project, but it is rumored that Warner Bros. is looking for a female director to shoot the film, in addition to making Kara the new face of the DCEU.

So much for Man of steel 2

@PantherKing - that’s like saying if they rushed a marvel movie with a female then there won’t be a male centered movie after. They’ve been talking about a supergirl movie before JL came out just be glad we are living in a age of superhero movies

@whynot - no one is saying don’t make a female superhero movie but man of steel 2 should be coming out before this one considering how closely tied Kara’s origin is to superman’s. There has been no mention of supergirl in this universe.

@PantherKing - probably won’t get man of steel 2, with cavil out I’m guessing a soft reboot with a new cast to start a trilogy

@nikgrid - Firstly, did anyone actually think Man of Steel was good? It was a divisive movie at best.

Secondly, WB gave you TWO subsequent films with Superman, and they got progressively worse. It's no wonder they have decided to change track and take a punt on a different character.

@528491 - Firstly: [frick] yes people thought Man of Steel was good. Myself included.

Secondly: WB gave us two films which they [frick]ing broke....they MAY have learned their lesson (We hope). We want another Superman film!

@nikgrid - Man of Steel would have been far better and far less divisive if it had gotten the title character actually right. People who don't care much about that loved it. Sure, he looked like Superman for a change and he had the powers, but his outlook on things and mindset wasn't there. Getting a couple things right isn't enough for serious fans of the character. His character was wrong. His heart and soul. Granted, it wasn't perfect in Donner's movies either, which is often brought up, but that was the 70s/80s.. We were lucky to even have as good a movie as we did back then.

Look at how long we've waited for a return of the character. In 2006 it was way overdue, and then look at the disappointment Superman Returns was. Then, wow, they're doing it again! And they're casting someone who looks more like Superman who's actually putting on the muscle! Finally! We'll get Superman right. And then.. no fortress of solitude, he wrecks people's $100k property when they act like drunk jerks, without even any explanation to them. His father pretty much tells him don't help people, fear people. He walks the earth, from manual labor gig to gig aimlessly for over a decade? Stealing shirts from clotheslines? Get out of here with that. That just isn't the story of Superman.

According to Zack Snyder, the only thing good in Clark's life was Lois. Well, Martha also, but that apparently wasn't enough to make him decide to visit her until he's in his 30s. And her life has gone down a lonely path since all she has is Clark and he's been wandering. Why, Zack, why? And before you answer, I don't care, you're fired forever.

@ImmovableForce - "Sure, he looked like Superman for a change and he had the powers, but his outlook on things and mindset wasn't there."

That's bollocks, I'm one a huge Superman fan, and I thought they got him exactly right. As you said above he wasn't quite the comic Superman, but that's because he was Superman for a DAY.

Zack Snyder put the Man in superMAN.

@nikgrid - sorry but he should be "Superman" from day 1 - the values and beliefs should be instrinsic to his character not suddenly arrive beause he's put a suit on.

@Radders - "sorry but he should be "Superman" from day 1 - the values and beliefs should be instrinsic to his character not suddenly arrive beause he's put a suit on"

Why? Where is the character growth? My son didn't come out of the womb a good boy who's well behaved I had to TEACH him that.
I loved Chris Reeve but honestly he was a cartoon character except for a few moments in Superman the movie
Radders
Radders - 6/5/2019, 3:19 AM
@nikgrid - I didn't say anything about coming out of the womb that day - though you are clearly discounting nature over nurture.

And even given the idea that he becomes supes through nurture - when? Where do you see his parents give him values? They sapend most of their time instilling him with fear not to mention Jonathan telling him he probably should have let a bus full of children die?

Yes there should be growth but that shouldn't suddenly happen when he's an adult. I'm sorry to reference the MCU but like Steve Rogers - he should be that person who'd throw himself on a grenade by nature - who would be a hero even without powers.

@PantherKing - Your right no mention of supergirl. There was no mention of many superheroes before they got there own movie. I’m not saying I don’t want MOS2 bc I do! But I can dig a supergirl movie if they follow it pretty close to the origins of the character. I think Cavil needs to be in it in a supportive role though. MOS 2 definitely needs a green light and can’t believe it hasn’t happened yet

What a dumb idea! This studio is determined to over saturate these characters insuring that they will be less marketable.

Honestly... I do not care. I am a massive DC fan... and after the current Universe just being one big turd burger...honestly? I don't care. Just another rush job by DC/WB rather than take their time and properly write/execute. For the record, I have no problem with Supergirl. But the machine isn't ready.
ImmovableForce
ImmovableForce - 6/2/2019, 8:08 AM
@InvisibleMan - Yep, the machine hasn't been ready in several decades. It may never be at this point. I agree. Do it right or don't. And by that, I mean the whole universe of characters, but especially the trinity. Especially Superman. Until I see him done right, I have no trust to show up at the theater.

Just reboot Superman with Hoult and a good director! I rather have a new Superman movie but until then I can settle with a Supergirl movie 😀. It's good to see DC and Marvel out there doing it! As a fan I'm so damn happy 😊

But didn't they spend years telling Arrow that it couldn't have characters that are primed for movies?

Now they choose to make a movie from one of the few characters headlining a tv show...?

I don't mind a SG movie but SG should be set up on a Man of Steel sequel first then spinoffed. I hope the old rumors she is fighting brainiac are fake. If real, I am done with DC.

I'd have preferred Supergirl to have been introduced in Man of Steel 2, instead of just giving Supergirl her own film.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 6/1/2019, 4:59 PM
I think it's safe to say a Man of Steel sequel is out of the question at this point for several reasons: they did Cavill dirty for starters, then their uiverse took a radically different direction (by being *gasp* good/decent), not to mention thay can ride the tide of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel because hey, they have a flying super lady from space too, and it's Superman's cousin on top of that. and finally, this could prove to be way more profitable than another Superman movie because more female heroes are in demand right now.
we'll probably won't see another Superman movie for at least 5 more years, and by that point MoS will be 10 to 11 years old. yeah, that ain't getting a sequel, they'll probably reboot it to fit with Pattinson's Batman or something.
