Maxwell Lord picks: WORTHY DC VILLAINS FOR FUTURE SUPERMAN PROJECTS!

Who would be a worthy opponent after Kal-El disposes of Zod in Man of Steel this summer?

For a character that's over 70 years old Superman hasn't had the best rogues gallery in comics. That being said I looked throughout the DCU to find out who I would cast for his villain in a future Man Of Steel sequel. This was tough, as I found some of his villains uninteresting. If there's anyone to blame for that it's the creative teams who put the books together. I did however find a pretty good group of possible enemies for the man of steel to rumble with. So in no particular order, here's my choices for worthy Man Of Steel opponents.

Worthy opponents:

DARKSEID

PRO:
Darkseid is one of the most powerful and evil characters in the DC Universe, IF NOT THE EVILEST. Although he might be used as a JLA threat he has been portrayed as a Superman villain, with acts so evil he easily can dethrone Lex Luthor as his most hated enemy.

CON:
He's a New Gods villain first.

He would probably be a better JLA threat.

BRAINIAC

PRO:
Now here's a villain that can compete with Darkseid, and anyone else for that matter. Brainiac is a super-intelligent alien being from the planet Colu who has fought Superman many times. Extremely advanced mental abilities that have allowed him to work through numerous robotic and even human proxies make him a dangerously formidable opponent. It is difficult to tell whether you're dealing with the original Brainiac, or one of his drones.

CON:
I don't know about you guys but some times find this character a little corny and drone-like to carry a full on film, but who knows?

DESPERO

PRO:
This character is BADASS. One of the strongest characters in the DC universe. Despero debuted in 1960 and is virtually an unstoppable force of nature. Despero is an alien from the planet Kalanor, and in addition to a genius intellect possesses a third eye on his forehead capable of mind control, illusions, telekinesis, and telepathy. Despero is also empowered by the "Flame of Py'tar", a mystical source of power that grants him massive superhuman strength, durability, and the ability to alter his mass (from human-sized to massive). He has repeatedly been shown to be more powerful than Superman and Captain Marvel, and has taken them on with WW at the same time and still managed to hold his own.He would be a fresh villain to introduce in a DCCU.

Here's a youtube video some guy put up about Despero, lol:

CON:
He might be too powerful for Superman. Maybe a better Justice League villain.

IMPERIEX

PRO:
Imperiex is probably the greatest threat on this list, even to the villains on the list. The embodiment of entropy, Imperiex takes the form of pure energy contained inside a humanoid set of armor, colossal in size.

CON:
Again Imperiex is the biggest threat on this list. That being said he can easily be a more DC universe villain than just a Superman one!

LEX LUTHOR

THE OLD CLASSIC!
PRO:
Lex is Superman's main arch-nemesis without question.

CON:
I'm personally sick of Lex Luthor, He's so overused in films imho and boring. The only version I ever liked of him is Clancy Brown's performance in Superman TAS!

MONGUL

PRO:
A very real threat to the Man of Steel...
Mongul attacks Superman on his birthday and ensnares him with the Black Mercy, an alien plant that fed off a victims "bio-aura" while rendering the victim incapable of fighting back, giving them their own perfect "dream world" in return. In the end, Mongul becomes the plant's next victim and dreams of himself as ruler of the universe. The story "For the Man Who Has Everything" was written by Alan Moore, and has become the pivotal Mongul story.

Here's that guy again with his Youtube vids:

The story he was referring to was written by Alex

CON:
Could be perceived as Darkseid-Lite, He's actually very brutal, ruthless and messed up.

ECLIPSO

PRO:
This guy is the incarnation of the Wrath of God and the Angel of Vengeance that turned evil before being replaced by the Spectre. He's definitely capable of holding his own against Supes.

CON:
Eclipso(est. 1963) looks like Green Goblin(est. 1964)
He was a virtual joke until the 90's series which reveals his origin and cast a significant paradigm effect at least for me about the character. At least for me anyhow.

MAXWELL LORD

PRO:
I later in life was confirmed as a metahuman with the ability to telepathically influence people's minds. The extent of his abilities range from simple suggestion to outright commandeering of another's mind as seen with my complete possession of Superman where I was able to make the Man of Steel perform acts far outside of the range of his normal sensibilities. My power is not of the "zombie" mind control variety, but rather the kind where the people affected go about their daily lives and are unaware of my influence. I also has the ability to influence more than one mind at a time and, at one point, had many people under my control. While the subject's will does factor in on how difficult it is to initially possess and maintain my control, so far no one has been able to avoid my influence for long.

CON:
There is no con :)

METALLO

PRO:
Could be a cool looking Villain on par with the Terminator aesthetically.

CON:
His story gets old IMO

Honorable Mentions:

MANCHESTER BLACK

GOG

LOBO

LIVEWIRE

PARASITE

DOOMSDAY

I personally never been a fan of Doomsday's visual aesthetic. I do like that this villain is a violent one, I just wish there was more to him than he once killed Supes.

To end this I decided to repost the Superman trailers, ENJOY:

I don't about you but for me I consider Despero more of a Martian Manhunter villain than Superman.

I think IF Darkseid is the villain in JL, then either Brainiac or a combo of Lex and Metallo should be the villain for MOS2.

Grundy baby!

Seriously though, it might be interesting to see what they can do with Cyborg Superman and The Eradicator. I guess they'd have to kill him off first though...so Doomsday it is.

Anything to get that horrible Smallville version out of my head.

i do not want to see doomsday. he's too boring. the only way to make that interesting and have any depth would be to the death and return story line as a trilogy. i'd like to see intergang thrown in to the story line with maybe lex, parasite, metallo. or a mixture of any of those three. bizzaro is another fun choice that kinda of begs for a modern update. i'd enjoy seeing darkside but i think your right he's best kept for the jla.

luthor's corny now. he shouldnt need Metallo to make him bad ass thats [frick]ing stupid.

and [frick]ing Doomsday, are you retarded? He's a hulk knockoff

Mongul sucks

Hey Tainted, did you pick up Justice League #20? Big guest star.

Tainted87

@Levi
I stopped reading comics when the store nearest me closed - twice. So not since 2010. Looks cool though.

==

Brainiac is the obvious choice - except he truly would be a better Justice League villain. Justice League could, as it happens, be a sequel to Man of Steel, so I guess it counts as a future Superman project. He's just so BIG, and his influence reaches across the cosmos. He's like the personification of the Borg.

I'd love to see Superman deliver a line like this to the League.

TheBatfanCC - 5/24/2013, 10:51 AM
@Levi whens the update due dude i want a good read,

to be honest Darkseid will be the JL villain as

1) he is one of the biggest DCU threats
2) legion of doom cant be established as no solo films yet, need villains and with a JL film too many characters to introduce
3) new 52 origin

but i would like to see brainiac as the next MOS villain, after JL see in my vision as Kara is now on earth in the MOS prequel i think a perfect trinity film would be the batman/superman apokolypse
1) all 3 of the trinity have a big role
2) gives closure to darkseid for now after JL
3) introduces Kara allows her to be used in the Brainiac and Kandor storyline of hopefully MOS II

then use Doomsday in the 3rd film with Luthor creating Superman clones, so Bizarro and Superboy

before you ask Luthor not in a big role, I would have him in what i think arguably should be the next DC film , Worlds Finest. I would have Deathstroke/Deadshot, BlackMask Luthor and Metallo. BlackMask aquires kryptonite, Luthor strikes a deal pays Deathstroke/Deadshot to kill Mask's problem the Bat, means detective work and interrogation to get to luthor Bat helps Superman against Metallo. Means Supes and Bat meet, means that they dont have all the screentime in JL they disagree but not as much as in WF

Darkseid is the Omega. You don't start with the Omega....nothing else is beyond it.

Oh and Brainiac has to be the most boring one dimensional bad guy ever. He will be a wack villain.
I'm for Darkseid

Despero
Lobo

Hell no to luthor unless he's a background villain

Luthor and Metallo for MOS2 and then Doomsday so we can kill Superman in MOS3. Personally, I've never found Brainic to be a villain to get excited about. He's a fan favorite for sure but, I just don't see why.

Reasons to like Brainiac....

1) He may have caused the destruction of Krypton
- By sabotaging Jor-El's findings, Brainiac discredited the leading scientist who had discovered the planet was going to explode. This is due to Brainiac's law of conservation - rather than send a missile into the sun, he simply guaranteed the planet's doom.

2) He has the collective knowledge of countless civilizations/species
- Brainiac is a collector.

No, not that kind - although the two have their similarities. He possesses the technology to abduct a whole city by miniaturizing it. From there, he gathers information from its inhabitants - their inventions, their physiological and genetic make-up, their distinguished traits. He applies the data to his own collective and advances from this, replicating aspects.

3) He is a genuine control freak
- Once the sample bottled city is collected, Brainiac sends a payload into the planets' sun, destroying the system as a means of adding value to the acquired species/environment/technology and containing his research. His plans for evolution only include himself.

4) He therefore possesses the ability to take on every member of the Justice League
- Initially, you'd expect an army of Brainiac drones as you've undoubtedly seen in "Unbound". Truly, Brainiac is more of an artificial intelligence than the somewhat organic host he inhabits, so in that respect, he is never really in danger. If his drones are destroyed, he'll build more. If his host is destroyed, he'll upload his intelligence to another. Unless of course, the assailant was super fast.
- Consider the goals and technology. He can replicate kryptonite and/or the red sun (Superman), he can shrink himself and others to a size unnoticed by the naked eye (the Atom), he is genocidal (Martian Manhunter), his consciousness is made up of the selected minds and marvels of species all throughout the galaxy (Green Lantern), he always has a contingency plan (Batman), he applies his scientific prowess to the application of different powers/tech (the Flash), he is the unnatural creation attributed with an array of advanced abilities, and his quest for knowledge took him to different worlds (Wonder Woman).

5) He's quite manipulative
- Brainiac, who is believed to have evolved from that of a computer - spent quite a bit of time watching people. He's quite patient, and from his observations, he's able to quickly discern the weaknesses of his threats. As he is self-aware, the first thing he will typically exploit is one's curiosity. Doesn't Kal-El want to learn more of Krypton? Couldn't Lex Luthor salvage unspeakable technology from a seemingly deactivated drone? Wouldn't Darkseid just love to find variables to the Anti-Life Equation that one such as Brainiac would most certainly have? And almost always, Brainiac will let his enemy think that he has been reprogrammed to serve him/her as a means of gathering more information, more weaknesses.

It's why he's my favorite DC villain.

I say metallo, id rather not have brainiac for the sequel bc he's tied to krypton, we have Zod and CO for the first movie, the world is gonna hate superman if every threat comes from his home world, its like ok we were better off if u weren't sent here bc all u bring is trouble lol
TheTank
TheTank - 5/24/2013, 3:33 PM
Id like it if at the end of Man of Steel 3 doomsday gets released, and the JLA fights doomsday and superman gets killed, you can really do that story justice with the JLA tied in.

I just got done watching, Superman: Unbound. I was really getting into Brainiac but.... as soon as he got separated completely from his ship, he's useless. I'm definitely sticking to Luthor and Metallo for MOS2 and Doomsday for MOS3

You know what. DONE RIGHT Lex Luthor could be an AWESOME movie villain for Superman.

The fact is- the movies NEVER got him right. So saying he's overused is a bit...inaccurate seeing as how he's never even received a proper nor accurate portrayal.

My vote goes to a Brainiac/Luthor team up.

SUCK IT HATERS
