Michael Shannon On General Zod And Filming MAN OF STEEL

General Zod in Man of Steel is a different character, visually, from past comic book iterations of the character. Trailers, posters and promo art confirm a more emotive look to the Kryptonian general but the anger is still there. Speaking to The Huffington Post, actor Michael Shannon confirmed that Man of Steel has been a long process, [Man of Steel's] a big buildup. I'll tell you, I saw it last Monday -- it's worth it. It's going to blow everybody's socks off. And I know [WB's] probably pissed off, like I'm jinxing it or something and I shouldn't say that. I'll knock on wood just out of deference to the gods, but the movie is solid. It's gonna get the job done."

Reflecting on his time on set and in a motion-capture suit, Shannon admitted he was a little concerned, not being able to see the finished visuals immediately during playbacks but director Zack Snyder simply asked Shannon to trust him. Said Shannon, "It's exhilarating. It's what Zack [Snyder] promised would happen, you know? Because I remember the first couple of days I was on set, I thought This is ridiculous. I look like an idiot. I don't look anything like General Zod. I'm a total failure. I went over to the screen for playback and it was ridiculous. All of us were wearing pajamas, basically. And there was this neon green set of stairs that was supposed to be our spaceship. So you see us all marching down these neon green stairs in our pajamas and I'm like, 'This looks like a Monty Python skit.' And he's like, "I know right now it looks pretty silly, but, two years from now, , it's going to look like the most badass thing you've ever seen in your life. And he's right."

The actor also touched on the expectations of comic book fans which he diplomatically admitted that he is not. Shannon franly stated, "I mean, it is their thing. It's not my thing. I'm not in that club. So, I have a respect for it. To people, it's like a religious experience and I don't discount that. I understand it. We're very sheltered from all that on set. I mean, yeah, if people want to know if it was a high pressure job -- it was very high pressure. And everybody felt a lot of anxiety about getting it right. But, Zack's strategy -- which is very intelligent -- is to keep everything very calm and fun and playful and not get tied up about it. Because if you get overly anxious about pleasing people, you can't make anything. You have to be relaxed and have a good time."

I honestly think that the next Batman movie the suit should be made out of the same type of material that they used for Cavil's Superman suit and some of the muscle definition should be added in the same way. I think it would allow for more fluid mobility and it would allow for cooler fight scenes because Batman could actually move.

No kidding, but WB has this screwed up mentality that "The Dark Knight" needs to be covered in rubber armor.

That pic of Zod alone with his mouth open never fails to make me laugh, taken out of context it looks like he's gonna give angry head lol... But yeah, I'm pumped for this film, everyone looks set to own and tonally this looks like its setting up a nicely balanced fantastical/realistic DC universe

I haven't seen boardwalk empire but seen clips of his character in some scenes and he looks super-intense!, I'm sure he'll make an iconic Zod.

@ Nivekian WB has screwed up a lot more then that. It was the same with Marvel at first as well. Hopefully WB got their $hit together after watching Marvel dominate for the last several years and will start making some great DC films beside the Nolan trilogy.

@SuperCat I would have disagreed with you on that statement as best villain of the summer because of Ironman 3. But after the stupid plot twist I am agreeing with you 100% on that statement

@fettastic:
Normally I'd be pissed if a director shot a fighting scene the way Nolan filmed Batman's first appearance in the docks in Batman Begins, but i think that it added to the terror and confusion. It almost made me feel like I was there with the other thigs trying to make sense of what's going on and only being able to see quick flashes of black armor/cape and shadows.

No Batman needs armor in the real world. MoS works on real world rules with a huge first contact curveball. Even Batman in the comics wears armor. It's bullet proof, shock proof and blade resistant.

@Fettastic

The whole point of Batman fighting during the day was because he finally became a hero. From vigilante, to dark knight to Caped Crusader. It's been in the comics for years, albeit much slower over the years.
Tony93
Tony93 - 4/29/2013, 8:26 AM
By the way the armor could really into an Aquaman movie, imagine the scales instead of the chain link and plus the kryptonian armor like Jorels could pass as atlantian

I haven't seen IM3, but knowing the twist, it feels like a waste of a great actor and what could have been an awesome villain. But I'll reserve judgment till I actually see the movie. All the reviews are saying it's pretty damn good. But Shannon's Zod is lookin' pretty legit. Can't wait to see this.

@Supercat, not at all. deliberaty removing diversity from the source material is never a good idea. it serves no positive purpose.

The Mandarin could have been third best villain of the year but when the twist he is the worst all time villian on screen (in comics is badass)
JatevinM
JatevinM - 4/29/2013, 8:53 AM
The material if used with Batman could easily be explained as of to why its bulletproof. It could be explained away as an extremely tight knitted metal mesh material.
