Michael Shannon Talks MAN OF STEEL Story, CGI Suits, Flying And Director Zack Snyder

Talking to The Province (via Superman: Man of Steel (2013)) Michael Shannon was quizzed on how his time working on Man of Steel has been going, although the actor was as careful as ever not to give too much away. "Man of Steel? It’s about Superman, I can tell you that. It’s pretty hush-hush, it’s a reboot going back to the origins of Superman. We started doing preparations in the spring, learning stunts and stuff, and we started shooting towards the end of July. We were in Illinois for a couple of months then we wound up here in Vancouver."

"Oh, he’s a prince," the actor said when talk turned to director Zack Snyder. "One of the sweetest people I’ve ever met in this business. Very warm-hearted individual and very creative. He blends in, he likes to feel, to be one of the guys, one of the crew, but he’s able to do that without losing his authority. He doesn’t really crack the whip, he’s friendly and because he’s friendly people want to make him happy."

Zack Snyder's movies tend to be fairly heavy on CGI and this is something Shannon is seemingly quite grateful for, especially after the interviewer brought up how former Zod, Terrence Stamp, was hoisted around on a rig to achieve the flying effects in the original Superman. "Unfortunately for Mr. Stamp, they didn’t have CGI back then. I’m being spared a lot of drudgery that he had to endure. From time to time I’m in a harness, but I don’t think anywhere near as much as he was. It’s no secret that a lot of the film is going to be assisted by computer designed animation."

"I guess it can be frustrating not having those tactile elements around you, being surrounded by the green, but you’re always trying to tell a story and be honest and you use your imagination regardless of whether there’s a set or not," he revealed, highlighting some of the potential downsides to visual effects. "In a way it’s even more childlike (with CG) because you’re really relying solely on your imagination, like a little kid in the yard who doesn’t have any props, just inventing something out of thin air. That’s the original impulse for it all to begin with, I think."

STARRING:

Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman
Amy Adams as Lois Lane
Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent
Diane Lane as Martha Kent
Michael Shannon as Zod

Meh, you're way too fast Josh, lol.

Anyway, isn't it interesting to note that line..."It’s a reboot going back to the origins of Superman." Back to the origins. Yay.

Is anybody else still worried about Zack Snyder's CGI-laden style or is that just me?

It must be pretty funny. I would think working with CGI would be very weird for the actors.

With Zack Snyder in charge, I'm guessing they'll use the same VFX houses they did for Sucker Punch. Regardless of what you thought of that movie, there's no denying that it was visually stunning.

It took Smallville 10 years to do Superman's origin, do we really need a new one already? Reminds me of Geoff Johns' Secret Origin getting overshadowed by Morrision's Action Comics...Stupid New 52...

Also, CGI suits? C'mon!

I don't understand all the fuss, we already know that supes and zod have normal suites, the CGI suit is some sort of armour suit!!

I for one can't wait for a great superman movie. IMO we have never had one, the original Superman was awesome, until lex came into it. I want no comedy lex in these movies!!

I'm also glad it's pushed to 2013, as that ensures that Nolan will be involved in the editing!!!

I really hope that this turns out good. Superman needs a good film.

On a side note if anyone hasn't read my Crow Story please check it out. It's called Mercy is for the Weak.

Yeah, remember those origins? When Clark was more kryptonian, had a beard and an ugly suit?
rbfn04

cause everything points to it being a far cry from the character. more like batman than superman. plus, snyder... plus, bracelets... plus ugly suit...

Why does everyone suddenly think the suits are cgi? READ THE ARTICLE!! There's no mention of the suits being cgi (other than the odd cape) in any article on this movie. Add to that the fact we've seen the suits and you should all give yourselves one epic facepalm!!

As for the director? I think they have the perfect man for the job in the perfect team. I urge you all to see Sucker Punch if you haven't already. Yes, one of Snyders worst efforts so far but it actually made me realise how good he is for Superman. The movie is a visual masterpiece, the action is sublime! What let's it down? No real character development and a rushed/chopped story. How can these negatives be turned around?

1 - Superman is a very well known character who doesn't need quite so much development. Not saying he doesn't need any but you get the point.

2 - Story and production by the same people who gave us Batman Begins and TDK!

3 - I don't need a "3" as my "1 & 2" were so good!

As Ron said, no mention of any cgi suit. There's been pics of Cavill in the super suit, as well as Crowe in his Jor-el suit. Can't pass judgement yet, no matter who's movie history may be a little tipsy (Snyder's, who I think is an awesome director; every director, actor or whomever has a bad movie at some point, nobody's perfect). This movie will be sweet. Snyder knows he's in a postion to deliver a great Superman movie, so I believe he will. In conclusion, only "complaint", origins?? Why?!?! Hope it's a simple, subtle, not-really-there kind of origins story. Otherwise, regardless, this will be a great movie.

Peace fellow comic book slash movie goers!!

@rbfn04 You're a lost cause. If you don't think it'll do well, then just don't bother seeing it. I mean, apparently, Clark isn't ALLOWED to have a had a beard somewhere in his past. Updates on the suit of ANY kind are forbidden. Oh, and NO NEW interpretations on the mythos are allowed at ANY time....even if the comics do them all the time. Sorry, but that's just the way it seems with you.
