My Thoughts on the Superman and Catwoman Movie Costumes

Costumes for two major DC characters revealed within 24 hours of each other? That's kind of a big deal. Some brief thoughts on both costumes.

I'm not really loving either of these, but I'm hopeful that Superman's costume will look better when we see it full in better lighting and that Catwoman's costume may be just a prototype. My biggest annoyance with the Superman costume is probably the S symbol. Although, it's an awkward angle, it does look weird. Would it be asking for so much for them to do a symbol like this? (Ignore the rest of the costume and just focus on the S, people.)

As for Catwoman, I don't think they have to worry about reminding people about Halle Berry's Catwoman with this look. That's something. I'm hoping that if her costume does evolve into something more Catwoman-like, it will look sort of like the design from the upcoming video game Batman: Arkham City. It has a realistic and practical look that still feels like the character.

I think both looks okay! Superman looks great! Catwoman looks a bit on the strange side but Nolan will make it work, probably. Hate to say it but I trust it will be a great movie.

Thanks for checking out my article, Corpse. I'm glad you like the costumes. I think a lot of people tend to react very strongly either way when they see the first pictures released, so I try to hold back judgement for a while.

No problem BIGBMH! You seem like one of the most rational people on CBM. I think we need to reserve judgement more on this site. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I really hope everything works for every comicbookmovie. Nothing is ever perfect enough for us the fans.

Catwoman's is very bland and boring. Scarjo's jumpsuit had more personality, but then again, that suit has more personality that Anne anyways.

The super suit is ok, but WTF is with the little grroves all over it? Too much texture going on. I dont mind the air flex ripples in the suit, but the shield too? why?

HaroldOfGalactus- "but then again, that suit has more personality that Anne anyways."

Ouch. You went there.

I agree about the texture on the Superman suit. Maybe they're trying to make it look Kryptonian, but we all remember what happened last time a movie tried to hard to make an alien superhero costume.

I agree with the catwoman part. It shoul be like Batman: Arkham City. I love this ass. I'm trying to penetrate my computer screen with my dick for this ass

i don't understand how anyone an really judge Catwoman's costume. You can hardly see any of it aside from her arm and face. and she's riding the batpod, so the context of the picture is completely unknown.

that pic could be later in the movie, and she had to jump on the batpod lickety-split to go help batman with everything she had on her at the time. you just don't know. its impossible to know if thats her full costume or not, and again, even if it is, you can't see hardly any of it to judge, lol.

Shit, I [frick]ing slept all day, I come on to see two unexpected press releases, *sigh*.

Superman, the movie is two years away, I hoped for a more functional suit [w/o the cape] but whatever, seems like alot of people like it.

Catwoman, not what I expected, not bad, just... lacking, but it works, I dig it.

Pretty much agree with you here.
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 8/5/2011, 6:37 AM
@CDB, But if that is her full costume, it doesn't matter that much if we can see the body. The mask pretty much determines whether she has a Catwoman look or not. Replace any iconic Catwoman costume's mask with Hathaway's goggles and see how much it still looks like Catwoman.

as long as Cavill looks RIGHT in it, then it works for me.

It makes sense to me.. maybe the movie won't focus on the suit as a suit but as a symbol in its red and blue colours sonic booming through the city of metropolis.

Although I love the Catwoman design from the Arkham game, it just doesn't work in Nolan's universe to have her running around in a Cat Costume.
TheQuestion
TheQuestion - 8/5/2011, 10:02 AM
I don't get the hate on the "Catwoman" costume. First off, it may just be a prototype and not her final look (and I assume that's the case). Second, the catsuit is very similar to both the classic look and the Jim Lee version. All it is missing is the cowl, add that and it's pretty spot on.

. . . Than why the [frick] is Batman is even in this movie. A man dress as a bat to fight crime is the equivalent to a woman running around in a cat costume commiting bugleries. Also, concidering that she might be an ally of the Bats, she could be similar to those Batman impersionaters from the last movie.

@TheQuestion
Dude, you just stated why the costume is bad. No cat like cowl, no Catwoman.

@BIGBMH
I can understand your disapproval of Catwoman's look, but I don't really see yours with Superman's. To tell you the truth, it is spot on in my opinion.

Catwoman:
This is deff a prototype. I dont know why people are jumping to the conclusion that this is the final costume. If this was the final product and she was running around calling herself catwoman I would think its dumb because she doesnt look like a cat...YET. But Nolans not one to spoil the fun for us so I GUESS WELL HAVE TO SEE THE MOVIE TO FIND OUT!

But either way I think all of us dudes should be happy that Nolan gave us a tight suit instead of an armored up chick. Sex appeal is there so stop crying. Why dont we wait another six months when it's closer to the movie coming out and see if we get the cowl.

Goggles are cool. Probs stole them from Wayne Enterprise. Keep it up Nolan and keep pissing off the fake fans. Us true fans wont cry about the first offical photo 11 months before the film comes out.

Superman:
Badass. Clearly I'm more intrested in TDKR but I'm digging Supes suit. It's got the right colors and the logo is basically punching us in the face which I like. Like I said about the catwoman coustume, its too early to jump to bold conclusions. As of right now I really like the super suit. I'm still on the fence about the red undies since we cant tell if he has them or not. Not sure if I want them or not but I'm sure either way it'll look great.

But I like both as of right now and I'm pretty freakin sure well get a few more pics of both by the time they come out.

@DCfan89, Did you not notice that I edited the S? Mine is much closer to the traditional S than pretty much anything worn by a live action Superman.

@Others, Some of you are pointing out the possibility that it's a prototype when I said that in the article.

As for the Superman costume, I'm not hating, but I don't understand the love for it. Weird texture, weird S, and we can't tell if the colors are good. They delivered on some basic levels, but overall I think people are more excited just to see it and by how Cavill looks as Superman.

Supes' suit looks awesome. The "S" is actually a throwback to the earlier designs. Google it. The suit looks modern and functional; think about it. If you're superman, you can't just put on some cotton suit and do the things that Superman can do. You need something that can withstand the punishment that Superman's actions will have on the suit. I'm sure they will explain why the suit looks scaly and rough. It's probably some time of "super" strong fiber.

Catwoman's suit looks fine to me, too. Yes, the ears/cowl would be nice, but as long as she is the same sexy, charming, devious, and perplexing vixen, I could give two f***s.
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 8/6/2011, 5:53 AM
@Macksimuc, Throwback or not, I don't like it. I find it hypocritical that so many peoplethrew a fit when Returns "changed" the S, but they're cool with this one. Be consistent, people.

The material used for the Returns costume and the Fantastic Four costumes look durable enough for Superman. A costume can be durable and not scaly. Again, I haven't passed fullf judgement yet, but the texture isn't looking cool.
Macksimus
Macksimus - 8/6/2011, 1:46 PM
@BIGBMH

Damn, as an obvious fan of the comics, you should know that "consistency" doesn't exist when it comes to comic book characters. Also, more than likely - considering who is producing (Nolan) - this movie will have a completely new take on Superman and his story.

...just be happy that they didn't make any radical changes to the costume, ala Burton's take on Superman ;)
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 8/6/2011, 2:41 PM
@Macksimus, I'm not saying be consistent with characters. I'm saying fans need to be consistent with their reactions to change.

2005: "What the hell? The S is different! This sucks!"
2011: "Okay, the S is different, but this is AWESOME!"

The reaction to the S just seems like it's a double standard that people have based on their feeling about other factors. The suit overall, the actor in it, excitement for this movie, etc.

@BIGBMH had more of problem with the SR emblem being to small and being a 3d shield; however the difference was that Superman Returns was "purposed" to be a loose sequel to Superman the movie and Superman 2. In general the they made a similar mistake with the shield being 3d here and the texture I'm a bit bothered by it too,but the rubbery material could be inspired by Superman:Birthright. However, emblem in Man of Steel is similar too Superman Earth 2/the 1940s which I think is why there are people who don't mind as much including me. There have been other takes of Supes when the blue has been dark like when I've seen some of the Alex Ross art or the animated series take. The maybe brighter than how it looks in this picture, perhaps it's because of how dark the pic is. Over all a clearer picture of it would help and I hope they tweak the hair. I like Superman suit over all though.

With Catwoman I'm sure she'll wear the cowl at some point in the film, but the costume is fine to me from what I see.

@BIGBMH The COLORS maybe a bit brighter than how it looks in this picture, perhaps it's because of how dark the pic is. Ugh I want the edit button back.

I just googled the Earth 2 S and I kinda hate it.

What would possess anyone to say screw this

we're going with this

It's the freaking Superman S! One of the most recognizable symbols there is for a fictional character! Why not just go with the one everyone is most familiar with? It's pretty much the best looking one anyway!
ShadowlordSavage
ShadowlordSavage - 8/8/2011, 2:31 AM
Well, considering I found a better design of the Earth 2 symbol not only by itself, but on Superman as well I'd say it's not as bad as you think. Plus it's a movie I'm sure they moderned it up a bit from what you've seen of the Earth 2 design. I even made a tracing/drawing of it myself and looking at it, it's not bad. It will be fine it's just the angle that makes it look weird. I sure when you get a better picture of it won't look as bad as you think it does.
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 8/8/2011, 11:04 AM
@Shadow, I'll give it a chance, but even if they're improving on it, I really think it would have been a lot more sensible to use the other, more classic S as the basis. We have seriously NEVER seen a live action Superman where that S because everyone seems to feel like they have to modify it for some reason.
