Richard Donner is one of Hollywood's most important filmmakers, the driving force behind iconic hits The Omen, Superman, The Goonies, and the Lethal Weapon series. His films - which have grossed billions of dollars at the box-office - touch generations of moviegoers, yet little is known about the man responsible for their success.

In the authorized biography, You're the Director, You Figure It Out: The Life and Films of Richard Donner, author James Christie charts Donner's transformation from wayward New York youth to Hollywood hotshot, revealing a power generator personality every bit as large as his blockbuster movies.

Based on extensive interviews with Richard Donner, his friends, family members, and many of those who have worked with and for the filmmaker, You're the Director... You figure it out goes behind the scenes on butting heads with Steve McQueen, sidestepping Marlon Brando's eccentricities, exploring the secrets of these and other big screen collaborations with Gregory Peck, Richard Pryor, Jackie Gleason, Mel Gibson, Bill Murray, Jodie Foster, Sylvester Stallone, Julia Roberts, Bruce Willis, and many more.

Just $24.95 plus postage, the book ships in November. Follow the link to order or type in the url http://bearmanormedia.bizland.com/id479.html.

The Donner cut is great, but a couple of years ago I found a version online that is largely the Donner cut, but with some Lester material as well (Let's face it, "General, would you care to step outside?" is a helluva a more rousing line than, "General, don't you believe in the freedom of the press?"). That being said, as much as I like Superman II, Donner should have been allowed to finish what he started. The power of Superman: The Movie is proof of that.

I also still need to watch the Donner cut of 2. I must make it my mission this week!

Mel Gibson contributed to this?

" I told Donner straight up, if he didn't blow me I had plenty of energy to drive over there.

AND I WILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL"

The Donner cut is excellent. Quality is a little uneven because of the source of the footage but who gives a damn about that. Buy it. Watch it.

The Donner Cut will really make you furious with Salkind. If Donner had been left alone to make the films he was originally asked to, the Superman film legacy would have been a thousand times more relevant than it is.

There are far too many films that suffered as Superman II did. I don't quite agree with you about the original II though Hellmount. I loved that film at the time and I still do. First real superpowered battle I ever saw on screen.

Superman I was very well done but as a comic book fan it was a little on the slow side. Superman II was far more fun even if it was uneven in many places.
