SMALLVILLE Star Alan Ritchson Reflects On Awful Aquaman Costume; Says He'd "Absolutely" Play DCU's Batman

Reacher star Alan Ritchson admits he has little love for the garish costume he had to wear as Aquaman in Smallville and reiterates his interest in suiting up as DC Studios' Batman. Read on for more...

Smallville ran for 10 seasons on The WB (which was later renamed The CW) and followed Clark Kent's incredibly lengthy journey from farmboy to Superman. Along the way, the future Man of Steel crossed paths with several young superheroes, including Arthur Curry/Aquaman.

Believe it or not, Alan Ritchson only played the sea-faring supe in four episodes; despite that, the role is one the Reacher star has become synonymous with.

Talking on the Post Credit Podcast, the actor admitted that he doesn't look back at Aquaman's suit with particularly fond memories. "What comes to mind first is how fast and far I can run from all civilization when I see myself in that orange head-to-toe Speedo, zipped up the middle," he joked.

"I see those pictures and I kind of can’t believe anybody thought it was a good idea to dress me like that and photograph me with that ensemble," Ritchson added. "When you’re just starting out, you do not feel like you have a voice or permission to say anything, so I just never questioned a thing and I wish I had. That Speedo was scary."

Since playing Aquaman, he's starred as Raphael in the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and suited up as Hawk in DC's Titans. Now, though, he's setting his sights on DC Studios' Batman in The Brave and the Bold...if they'll have him.

"The fact that people are interested in me playing Batman is a real honor and privilege," Ritchson said elsewhere in this conversation. "It’s one of the first characters I fell in love with as a child: I still remember the big, long pistol coming out of Joker’s pants as he goes to shoot down the Batplane."

"Those iconic moments really resonated with me as a child. For there to even be a conversation or a rumor mill surrounding this role, for me...all I can do is laugh. I just think it’s wild that’s where we are."

After suggesting he might be too old to play a younger Batman in the DCU, the hosts of the podcast pointed out to Ritchson that DC Studios' version of the hero will have a 10-year-old son in Damian Wayne/Robin. "Okay, then, you know...I would love to. I would absolutely love to," he confirmed. "It’s one of the coolest characters of all time."

Ritchson's star is on the rise and he's cemented himself as a bona fide action star with Reacher. Whether he's the sort of actor James Gunn has in mind for the Dark Knight remains to be seen, but he's a clear fan favourite right now.

After having watched Reacher, I think Ritchson would be a great choice. He got that vigilantism right, and he looked like a believable business man in that suit as well.

@bkmeijer1 - 100%. He's also got thay charisma for the Bruce Wayne. I can easily also see him as the father figure for his protégés.

@bkmeijer1 - a “believable business man” sure, maybe to someone visually impaired 😂

@TheNewYorker - good thing I am visually impaired, as I am colorblind.

That said, it's not something weird this day and age for billionaire to be working out. Just look at Jeff Bezos. Dude's been working out too

Watching Season 2 at the minute, fantastic. The idea of him playing Batman is growing on me with every day

And he got it on with Smallvilles Zatanna which made me laugh. They really should have had Justin Hartley to play the fourth member of the group, keep the Smallville connections going. They look really similar and the joke about him being a terrible shot would have deeper meaning haha

Ritchson definitely looks the part and could no doubt convey the presence & physicality of Batman but I’m not fully sold on him as Bruce , either as the brooding person he is in private or the playboy persona he puts on in public.

Plus , dudes built like a brick shithouse so I feel it would not be hard for anyone not to figure out his real identity lol.

Kidding aside , I wouldn’t mind giving him a shot if it happens though.

@TheVisionary25 - Reacher definitely sold me the brooding persona, but I can see him convincingly do the playboy persona as well. He already did a bit of that in S2.

And also, I can buy billionaires being buff. Batfleck had it, but there's also real world examples. Even Jeff Bezos is finding the time to work out

@bkmeijer1 - I can see that but he might be too buff lol

The dude in Reacher S2 was huge.

I do get what you mean about the private broody moments but Bruce tends to be introspective then too which I’m not sure I can see Alan being.

@TheVisionary25 - Ritchson definitely is massive, but maybe he slims down a bit if he gets cast as Batman. The movie is still far off anyway.

But yeah, I get what you mean about Ritchson pulling the different personas. Right now there aren't any comparitive roles he's done, but I think he has shown enough versatility that I think he can pull that off too.

I just rewatched Xmen 2000, and man oh man... if one thing is apperant, this genre has had eras of evolution in quality, both film and TV. Smallvile had to walk so others could run.

I loved him in Die Hard.

In no way should this man be Batman. His hulking physique is the antithesis of what a modern ninja who uses stealth and blends into the public as a unassuming playboy billionaire would be. I would rather see him as a grounded Solomon Grundy.

It's never going to happen because you all want it too much. You also wasted your one wish on Krasinski as Reed and that was just a one off.

(I'm also not saying this negative shit in any way to trick the odds in the universe... but I mostly am. Give us Alan Ritchson!)

First,bi love reacher, but still not sure of the depth of his acting. Secondly, the guy is all wrong for Batman. Batman should be physically intimidating, yes (one reason Bale wasn't great), but he's TOO big. Thirdly, he would make a great comic accurate Aquaman. 🤷🏻‍♂️

He looks just like CONAN the Barbarian, as drawn by John Buscema. Hell even his face is right. Make a Conan series. A real one this time.

I feel like, of the Smallville costumes, Aquaman's made the most sense, given his character's story.

I am happy that he's been receiving all of this feedback from his work on Reacher, it's well-earned and deserving. He's perfect for the role of the vagabond white knight as described by Lee Child. The success of the adaptations of those books into the current Amazon series is all thanks to his performance.

Which is why I don't really want him to ditch Reacher to suit up with the cowl and just do whatever Gunn orders him todo. Why leave a successful place (the "Reacherverse") where he's the center of it all and it's all thanks to what he's built? Makes no sense.

I hope he stays as Reacher for a good while, a much interesting character than Bruce Wayne to me by this point. This character that he's giving life isn't just literally strong or brooding but is one of the most intelligent characters I've seen in multiple ways. Those that have read or watched the first 2 Seasons know exactly what I am talking about.

But if comes down to all about badassnes and raw power, all that jazz we consume, it's safe to say Reacher > Batman.

He’s perfect for Aquaman in the DCU.
