Tim Daly, highly regarded by many to be the epitome of Supermen has finally given his thoughts on the upcoming Snyder Superman reboot!

Growing up in the 90's...this was my Superman. Tim Daly proved you can portray a tough/emotional/masculine Superman all in one. Which is something I feel a lot of the other 'Supermen' kind of failed at. But anyway here are his thoughts-

"Actor Tim Daly, who provided the voice for the Man of Steel on "Superman: The Animated Series", recently spoke with E! Online about Zack Snyder's upcoming reboot, "Man of Steel" and stated that he doesn't exactly have high hopes for the film.

"All these superhero movies seem exactly the same to me," said Daly. "I keep wanting to be surprised, but I'm not. It seems like [people] who went to college to learn to read pie charts are making these movies."

Daly joked that he would like to see a throwback to the 1950s TV series "The Adventures of Superman" starring George Reeves. "I would be happy if they had some guy standing around in tights and wearing a girdle... that would be fun."

Now while I don't completely agree with his negativity regarding the reboot...I sure hope Snyder will prove him and a lot of other doubters wrong. Now where I DO agree with him is how he felt about the people who have been making the Superman films and CBMs in general. I agree with him. Instead of getting "people who read pie charts" to make these films, they need to get a real fanboy to make one of these movies. Snyder MIGHT just be the fanboy we've all been waiting for to make a Superman film...whether we know it...or not. =D

~Man of Steel" begins filming in Plano, IL in August and is expected to debut in theaters during the 2012 Christmas season.

I know a lot of people are probably going to get pissed at Daly but hey...it IS news ;D

Anyway, like I said i agree with Daly to a degree. Look how long it's taken them to finally and HOPEFULLY get Superman right.

I still agree with Daly though. The man speaks the truth.

@GDSuperguy- Yep, STAS was the BEST. Hopefully it can get a new series in that style in the near-future though I doubt it...what with Bruce Timm working on that new Green Lantern series and all...oh well

@HeroComplex- Nah, I am excited for MOS but I'm not blind.

=D

I agree with Daly 100%

That's why I hope this Superman film will prove him wrong. But yeah, the guy's got a point.

He was and always will be my favorite Superman AND...i gotta say...the man speaks the truth. =D

That guy has been places and seen things in the comic book world most of us never will. If he says they all seem the same, thats not a dis, thats his take on them. He has been in this game for a long time, if anyone has the right to even say something like that, its him. Tim has been on the inside looking out while most of us are vise versa, cut him some slack.

@NextHero08- Very true and nice point! I hold no ill will against Daly. Like i said- The man speaks the truth

Plus it shows...I mean...CBMs are really becoming generic. And you're right...he must have seen things we didn't.

Way to go Daly! We've been spoon feed garbage for a looooong time! Why should it change with Snyder? Man Of Steel has shit written all over it!

Trapdinsteel - 6/29/2011, 2:13 PM
@LP4 - Good find. I respect Daly for his work on STAS and while I still have fun with all the CBMs as of late, I too hope The Man of Steel gives us some surprises. I can also appreciate that Daly, as a child of the 50's, looks back fondly to the George Reeves era.

@ncreb - I could understand your POV if you simply said you hate Supes movies but by your logic you must also hate the characters...Batman(Forever, B&R), Punisher, XMEN (last stand), Daredevil, Spiderman (SM3), Green Lantern, Ironman (IM2), Ghostrider, Fantastic 4, the list goes on because all of them have been criticized by either film reviewers, fanboys, or general audiences alike at some point in their run. Why someone would "hate" the character of Superman who is rich with 70 years of material due to a handful of films and film makers who failed makes you sound like a 10 year old whiner stomping your feet around and putting your fingers in your ears.

@Intruder - I am holding you to your predictions of failure for The Man of Steel. I will be the first to tell you that either you were right and buy you a beer or that you are full of sh^t and need to get your crystal ball fixed...when the time comes...
LP4
LP4 - 6/29/2011, 2:24 PM
@Intruder- Dude, no marvel-trolling here. =P

@GDSuperguy- Let's hope Supes doesn't go to Marvel. He won't anyway, I'm pretty certain WB and the lame Siegel heirs will work something out.

@ncreb- Dude I feel your pain. Hopefully this film won't suck but yeah i agree dude I haven't been a fan of ANY of the Superman films. The donner films- BORING. Singer's film- Even MORE boring.

Superman needs to start laying down some punches in this next film or else i'm pretty certain he will lose any remaining credibility he MIGHT have had left.

@Trapdinsteel- Thanks dude! Hopefully this will be the Superman film we've waited so patiently for. And yeah i agree, the simple fact Daly seems to favor George Reeves as his Superman implies to me he is DEFINITELY an old-school fan of Supes and that is f'n GREAT! A true fan right there.

@Splenda- Right on brotha! Tim Daly IS THE MAN OF STEEL. Cavill would be so lucky as to even stand in the MIDST of Daly!

JULEZ13 - 6/29/2011, 2:34 PM
Tim Daly is a Superman Legend! He was my Superman growing up. When I watch an animation from DC that shows Superman and it's not Tim Daly's voice I hear I get pissed and disappointed.

He's definitely not only talking about Superman but CBMs in general and I agree. He's saying what all us fans have been saying forever - to actually get someone who knows the characters and the stories to be heavily involved in the film, not just a director who had one successful movie at the box office, or television writers that just decided to one day write a script for fun (Green Lantern).

I also agree with keeping the old costumes! Change is not always good. ;)
LP4
LP4 - 6/29/2011, 2:44 PM
@JULEZ- Agreed! Tim Daly really is a Superman-legend. People can talk about Chris Reeve a billion times but the real Superman of anyone growing up during the 90's is definitely- TIM [frick]ING DALY!!!! I loved it when he reprised his role of Superman in the "Public Enemies" movie.

But yeah like i said...he speaks the TRUTH! hahaha he's freaken awesome!!!

But yeah I concur with you, he was a HUGE part of my childhood as well in STAS. Him and Kevin Conroy aka- BATMAN. lol
LP4
LP4 - 6/29/2011, 2:53 PM
But seriously if it came down to a feud between Cavill and Daly...

I'm excited for Cavill and all...but Daly WAS my childhood...so...

Daly FTW

Cavill could learn a thing or two from this man...

JULEZ13
JULEZ13 - 6/29/2011, 2:58 PM
@LP4: Yeah, I agree. He actually kinda looks like Superman too which is kinda weird, but not as much as Cavill. But Henry could definitely take some character lessons from him lol.

Kevin Conroy is the sh!t too!!

90s = best era in voice casting! (And that goes for Marvel cartoons too.)
LP4
LP4 - 6/29/2011, 3:08 PM
@JULEZ- Yep, 90's were def the best.

And of course- LEX LUTHOR and JOKER!!!

if anyone can make a good superman movie its zach. and nolan is behind him on it isnt he? so it should be good. 300 was awesome, and watchmen was good. changes in that movie disappointed me a little but still good. havent seen sucker punch yet but will soon.

@LP4 Good find. Your last idea in this article is the best. I have been saying this for years. In my opinion, Zack should have a room full of nerds like us to hash out the authenticity of Man of Steel. Even if we all sat around arguing (kind of like we do from time to time on the message boards) I know some great ideas would come from those arguments. I actually drafted a letter and sent it to Nolan, Snyder, and WB asking if they would allow me to advise them on a TDK viral campaign for MOS. Of course, no response, but still... You want to keep your fans happy? Ask them what they want, LISTEN, and then give it to them. I hope ol' Zacky-boy comes through.

Julez- I always love your comments, but for real... we need an updated costume. Not changed, just updated.
LordHuck
LordHuck - 6/29/2011, 7:34 PM
Daly doesn’t have any actual ideas. He just give a stock reply of. “its all the same, I want to be surprised”. That sentence could be used to describe an genre of film or even the auto industry.

JULEZ13
JULEZ13 - 6/29/2011, 7:37 PM
lol @LP4: Good comeback! That artwork is much better too! lol

@superman78: You actually have the address to WB?!? I wish they would actually let certain fans critique them along the way, I would love to be able to do that. But from a film perspective it could be rather annoying and distracting and may actually backfire in the end.
As for Superman's costume, I like the way it is, underoos and all! lol If what you mean by updated is no underwear then I can't agree with that. The costume would just look incomplete. The costume is perfect and classic. When you think of Superman that's what immediately pops into everyone's head and nothing is going to change that. We've had a lot of different contemporary style suits for Superman and none of them stuck, that says something.

Superman: The Animated Series was my favorite as a kid. The Ruby Spears Superman show that came on CBS back in 1988 was pretty good as well. I remember watching a couple of episodes when I was like 6 years old. The intro is below:

@Superman78- DUDE YOU SENT NOLAN/SNYDER A LETTER????!!

Please send them a letter to include LEX LUTHOR in MOS!!!!!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!

@JULEZ- Hahahaha Intruder deserved that slap. LOL. Marvel heroes are weaklings. DC FTW!!!

@ar8898- Nice find with the intro bro! ;D

@LordHuck, Daly's comment accurately fits the CBM gene, though; it doesn't quite fit anything else. BTW, nothing interesting coming outta the auto industry, really? How about: electric cars, propane conversion, uaw concessions, a small car being built in America...nah, same 'ol stuff ;D Daly's an actor not a writer. He isn't the one that needs to be coming up with the ideas.

superman78 - 6/30/2011, 4:30 AM
@LP4- indeed I did. I have a friend that works in CGI in California who was able to get me general inbox addresses, so it actually went email, but yep- I did it. Did anyone of any significance see it? Prolly not.

@Julez- okay. Maybe you're right. For the record, it's not that I don't like the traditional suit. I just think that if they are "rebooting" it may be a way to separate this story line from the Donner/Singer universe. I bet we see some variation on the classic suit. BTW- i've been wearing my underwear on the outside for years- is there something wrong with that? I wish someone would have told me.

well...you got Geoff Johns steering the wheel with Green Lantern, and look at how THAT one turned out :p
JULEZ13
JULEZ13 - 6/30/2011, 9:24 AM
@superman78: lol. Well, what most people forget is that Superman's costume was actually based on the outfits the strongmen wore during competitions in the 30s. So, really you can look at it as his "wrestling costume" like pro wrestlers wear on TV. If you and everyone else looks at it that way it wouldn't be that big of an issue especially since that was the way it was meant to be portrayed.

I liked the texture of the suit in SR, but thats as far as me liking anything about the movie. I just want to see how the real classic Superman suit would look in modern times but with the classic proportions not that crap that was designed by Singer and his people. I can't wait to see Snyder's take on it, it should be really cool.
TheLight
TheLight - 6/30/2011, 10:31 AM
@JULEZ13

Well said. I just hope that Snyder goes more with maintaining the classic with minor changes instead of the eye sore that's coming in the fall for the comics.

I love how you don't mention the good films that Synder made, 300, Dawn of the Dea, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. BTW Watchmen didn't suck you Marvel fan-boy

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939- THANK YOU!! Those films were VERY good. I loved 300, Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen. I have yet to see Suckerpunch or Legend of the Guardians.

Intruder just loves attacking anything/everything that is DC.

@ncreb- DUDE i agree with you 100% all the Superman films have been boring as hell. Damn. The donner films? Boring.

Singerman Returns? Boring as hell.

Supes has never had justice done for him on the big screen. I don't even care how people view the donner stuff from back in the day, I don't care that it was a classic even. The simple fact remains...the Donner films were boring as heck.

Hopefully Snyder can give us an action-packed Superman flick!
Trapdinsteel
Trapdinsteel - 7/1/2011, 10:50 AM
@ncreb - Like I said, I can understand your point of view if you simply do not like the movies, while I have fond childhood memories of the first two Donner films, I am not blind and looking back they certainly are not even close to perfect. I certainly get the fact that Superman needs a respectable film treatment along the lines of Batman Begins, TDK, Iron man quality.

My only point to you was writing off the character completely and saying the character of Superman in general "sucks" because of those films seems silly and closed minded. Especially in an article about Tim Daly who was part of some really good Superman material in STAS.
LP4
LP4 - 7/1/2011, 1:29 PM
ONE PUNCH...I'm just waiting for the day Superman on the big screen will throw just ONE [frick]ING PUNCH.

lol

Kinda sad to have to wait 30 years to see that. ;D

I think we can all agree here...that looking at the Superman franchise from a realistic/MODERN perspective...the Superman films were just WEAK. I mean, we are now 6 Superman films in...and in terms of his classic rogues gallery all we've ever seen are-

Lex Luthor and General Zod.

I love those characters...but come on...6 films and that's all we get from the comics???

We are now 7 films in for Batman and so far we've had-

Joker, penguin, catwoman, two-face, riddler, poison ivy, bane, mister freeze, zsaz, ras al ghul, scarecrow and even the minor mob-bosses from the comics.

There is a big and persistent problem going on here with the Superman films...and that's that they SUCK. They completely and utterly blow. And with 6 films in we've only gotten to see 2 of his rogues from the comics. And heck...even Lex Luthor has yet to be portrayed properly. Yeah from the old bronze age comics he was possibly...but in terms of CEO Lex Luthor...we have never seen that in any of the films...heck they never even introduced LexCorp.

Superman movies really do suck. And as much as i love O'l Supes...i'm glad his franchise is ending finally with this last movie in 2012. The suffering needs to end. WB has proven they never did and never will understand the character of Superman.

That is very, very utterly clear to me now.

i grew up watching Daly's Superman and Dean Cains Superman. Daly deffinetly had to voice down. I loved his version. i totally agree with him too. I'm hoping Snyder and Nolan give us something we dont forget!

BTW...does anyone else find it weird that an interview with a voice actor is in print? lol

I loved Daly's Superman but he's wrong about suprhero movies. "All these superhero movies seem exactly the same to me," That's just a lazy generalization.

Look at Iron Man, The Dark Knight, X-men First Class, and The Incredible Hulk. I'm sure there are more I could list but those 4 to me are very good examples of how you can look at multiple superhero movies and see that aside from the broad strokes, they're actually quite different. I agree to an extent, that some superhero movies follow a very formulaic format and plot, but these 4 have come out in the last 3 years and prove that as things have progressed, there is more variety because it's more common for people to do more than just insert a character's story into the predicatble format.
