UPDATE: Michael Shannon Briefly Talks Man Of Steel, Seems To Confirm "Phantom Zone"

Well, kinda! While on The UK's Soccer AM, the actor was quizzed about having "laser eyes" in Zack Snyder's upcoming reboot and in the process revealed that the Phantom Zone "set up" won't be Zod trapped in a little spinning triangle. Updated with video embed...

In the interview, Shannon first speaks about his role in Take Shelter and is then quizzed about playing General Zod ion Man Of Steel. He once again expresses his admiration for Terence Stamp's original portrayal and then in response to being teased about Superman 2's incarnation of The Phantom Zone (basically the 3 evil kryptonians trapped in a spinning triangle) he says that the new "set up will be a little different"

This at least suggests that we will see The Phantom Zone in some form in the movie. It's a shame Shannon didn't get the chance to elaborate on anything as Jason Byrne the annoying Irish "comedian" beside him seemed intent on hogging every bit of spotlight he could.

*facepalm*

Supes, actually it's an equilateral triangle.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 10/22/2011, 8:14 AM
Or an equilateral polygon if you want to be really specific:)

Hope Snyder makes the phantom zone like it was in the comics.Knowing him, he'll try to make it "AWESOME, dude!" and change it in xome way.. sigh

They used the parallelogram to specifically because the name, to show that the phantom zone is in a parallel universe.

I wonder if Zod and his cohorts will be freed by a nuclear bomb in space. Again. :/

parallelogram it is then. By square I meant 4 sides

Ain't this in 3D? So, is it gonna be a cube?

I want the Zone this time to just be a gateway to a black vacuum. Just a void of nothingness that looks terrifying to even go near. Almost as if you can hear the echoes of screams. Everyone would know that there's life on the other side, but it would look like a true punishment for the evil.

I surely hope that the Phantom Zone will actually play into the plot and NOT just be some footnote plot device.

Yeah, I watched this on TV this morning and was really looking forward to seeing what he had to say about Zod and M.O.S, but in keeping with the immaturity of "Soccer AM", he was essentially drowned out and mocked by people desperate for attention. God, I hate that programme...

Man those bracelets annoy the crap outta me. That and the weird patterns around the waist.

Hope Zod's uniform isn't just a copy off of Snyderman. er I mean, SUperman.

@Superguy think of them asanything, stilla bad design. not even getting into why i feel is wrong for them to be all wearing the same thing.

Its simply a bad design

rbfn04 - 10/22/2011, 1:09 PM
@Supes NOTHING Smallville did can be considered a good job, ok? :P

Now that we got that out of the way: thought Smallville's Phantom Zone too "real". SHould've been more ethereal IMHO
Supes17
Supes17 - 10/22/2011, 1:43 PM
I liked the concept though. They kept the original square(parallelogram) thing but also made it a separate dimension. Like a barren wasteland. It's better than the animated series' Phantom Zone, which looks like blood when analyzed through a microscope

jaysin420 - 10/22/2011, 2:07 PM
It's hysterical how everyone bashed Smallville non-stop, but now comic book writers and movie writers are basically using the show as canon.

Suck it haters.
rbfn04
rbfn04 - 10/22/2011, 4:14 PM
@JaySin yeah, it's funny cause Smallville was some emo 90210 crap and they are making the wrong move. I agree.

You do know the biggest inspiration to this movie is Birthright, right?

@Supes I understand, I'm saying I rather it be more ethereal, no square at all...

Yeah, Superguy, you know who were bracelets and no "panties" (as you call them, eventhough you call yourself a Superman fan)?

This guy:
rbfn04
rbfn04 - 10/23/2011, 1:04 PM
@Superguy yeah, sure, red trunks were holding him back, not bad writers...
rbfn04
rbfn04 - 10/23/2011, 1:33 PM
@Superguy what hollier than thou? Actually being a nice guy and not an anti-hero type? Yeah, so bad...

We saw tons of great Superman stories, don't blame the character if the writers DC put on his stories were lazy
rbfn04
rbfn04 - 10/23/2011, 2:25 PM
Batman could embarrass him cause DC makes Batman beat everyone. Wouldn't make sense having Bat in the "trinity" if he didn't. That's why DC forces the hand on that one.

Not starting fights is not being a wimp. But you think this douche "Superman" is cool, so I don't expect you to understand that, my man... :)
rbfn04
rbfn04 - 10/24/2011, 10:00 AM
@superguy once again you are ignoring mistakes he made. He admited it was a mistake going to New Krypton just to stay with a more recent one.

Now he's just this hot head. For exemple: I like the "ooh red eyes, Superman is pissed". But DCnU has him with red eyes all the time. That shouldn't happen as often, loses it's impact.

Also, again, don't blame the character if DC can't put talent writing him. Saying he's too good and we can't have conflict because of it is the same as saying "let's finish the marriage so we can have more stories". It doesn't make sense ;)
