What Nick Fury had was the Cosmic Cube. Loki will use it and it's power against the Avengers. The Cube was also used by the Red Skull in the comics, so it connects Captain America with the Thor movie.

Loki used his magic powers. Instead of dying in the end, he was transported through a wormhole and came to earth. He possessed Selvig, and met with Nick Fury, who had the
Cosmic Cube, a cube-shaped artifact of immense power created by the Skrulls, a shapeshifting alien race that has had several run ins with the avengers and fantastic four in the comics. In the avengers movie, it is presumed Loki steals the cube and uses its power to make the skrulls attack earth.

ok, theres a question i just HAVE to ask. how the hell does thor get back to earth for the avengers... and jane foster isnt in the avengers?
