The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Jorge Lendeborg Jr. has joined the cast of Paramount's first Transformers universe spinoff Bumblebee. He'll portray the male lead character opposite Academy Award-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge of Seventeen), who was confirmed earlier this summer.
Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) is helming the spinoff, which is expected to begin filming in a few short weeks. Christina Hodson (Shut In) penned the script.
Plot details remain scarce, but the film will serve as a prequel to the main film series and spotlight the fan-favorite Autobot's life during an earlier decade, rumored to be the '80s. Steinfeld is playing the main lead, a tomboy who works parttime as a mechanic after school.
After appearing in an episode of Graceland, Lendeborg Jr. made his feature film debut last year in The Land. He can currently be seen in Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming and Sony Pictures Classics' Brigsby Bear and has booked roles in Robert Rodriguez's Alita: Battle Angel and Greg Berlanti's Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, which are both due out next year.
