Paramount Drops The TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT Sequel From Their 2019 Release Slate

While audiences will get to see the Bumblebee spin-off film later this year, the sequel to 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight has been officially dropped from Paramount's slate of films for next year...

In 2007, the first installment in Paramount’s Transformers franchise was released and, despite a mixed critical reception, was a huge box office hit. While the four sequels to Michael Bay’s original film have managed to largely continue being successes at the box office, their critical reception has been on the decline.

As part of an attempt to correct their dwindling returns, Paramount assembled an impressive writer’s room to develop more stories for the franchise. However, their attempt to course correct didn’t pan out too well as evidenced by the release of Transformers: The Last Knight last year.

Still, the studio seemed confident moving forward with their plans for the franchise with both a Bumblebee spin-off and a sequel to The Last Knight in the works. Nevertheless, Paramount revealed (via Variety) that the Untitled Transformers Sequel is no longer a part of their slate of films for 2019.

The upcoming Bumblebee movie will still be released this December as expected, but Transformers 7 will be replaced by Tiffany Haddish’s comedy Limited Partners. What this shift in their slate of films means for the future of the franchise is unclear, but a rumor from earlier this year did suggest Paramount might consider rebooting the series after Travis Knight’s Bumblebee hits theaters.

So, what do you folks make of this change? Are you saddened by the news? Make sure to share in the comments below.

Saw this coming from a mile away, but as a slight fan of this series, I’m kind of sad.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - The very first one was AWESOME to me!! It had just the right about of Michael Bay, but still gave us the Transformers we knew. Each movie afterwards got a little more "Bay-ed" up though. I honestly hate Revenge of the Fallen, by the 3rd act I'm mind numb lol...but I did like Dark of the Moon, after that they started getting too repetitive.

Let a big time director have a crack at it. Bay was horrible. The designs were great and the explosions were there but everything else was shite.

@Frshcoupe - It needs to be done by a team. Not just one director. Because a transformers shared universe can be done very well with the right team.

I think John Favreau would helm a great Transformers film. He has been doing well with ensemble films.

Variety is 3 months late on this, we've know this film was dropped from scheduled since February when Toy Fair took place, lets not forget there an article here about how Hasbro is planning to reboot Transformers after Bumblebee that was published in Feb

It mostly sucks that Travis Knight apparently had to work within Bay’s horrible continuity. Should have let him start fresh as the first non-s***ty director of a Transformers film.

The first two movies were my childhood. I'll be sad to see it go, even if I had mixed feelings about 3. 4 and 5 were utterly forgettable.

But Transformers and Revenge of the Fallen will always have a special place for me. A lot of the older fans hated it, but in the same way G1 was their childhood, Bay was MY childhood.

Cheers Bay. Ya bastard!

@CheepTricks - I really liked Transformers 1 but Revenge of the Fallen is probably the most intelligence insulting and openly racist movie I’ve ever seen in a theater.

I liked part one and the last half of part three but the rest of these movies were pretty bad.
Hopefully they let it rest for at least five years before rebooting this franchise.

I really enjoyed Transformers 1 when it first came out. I paid to see it twice in theaters. Revenge of the Fallen was a dumpster fire. Dark of the Moon was a step up from 2, but it still had a lot of unforgivable Bay-isms. I paid to see Age of Extinction in the theater, and I still wish I could get a refund. I still haven’t seen Last Knight, and I have no plans to.

I may see the Bumblebee spinoff for no reason other than its director. I love Kubo and the Two Strings, and if that guy can infuse the heart and brains of Kubo into a Transformers movie, I would be impressed.

Thank Goodness. These movies have only gotten worse & worse. Reboot and keep the human element to a minimum. I’m tired of seeing humans wreck the Transformers. Make the Transformers the true badasses they’re supposed to be. In fact, start the reboot with an origin story of the Cybertronian war. Then bring them to earth for the sequel. Then end the trilogy with Unicron (just like the Transformers cartoon movie). Do that and I’ll be right back to paying my money to see them in the theaters. As of now, I’m done with the Bay Transformers movies.
