Transformers: Rise of the Beasts managed to exceed expectations at the North American box office this past weekend, overcoming stiff competition from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (which actually swung back ahead on Monday).

The movie told a mostly self-contained story but ended with a shocking cliffhanger when it was revealed that Michael Kelly's Agent Burke is, in fact, an undercover recruiter for G.I. Joe. The intention there was clearly to lay the groundwork for the long-awaited crossover between the two franchises, but will it happen in the next instalment?

It certainly sounds that way.

Talking to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), Transformers: Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple Jr. confirmed he's currently in talks to return for another movie.

"I am not officially signed on for the next movie," he started, making it clear no deals are done quite yet. "We're in the works now, but I'm not officially signed on. I'm in talks."

"I set up a lot of stuff in this film...anytime [the studio, producers, and I] talk about the future, you know, there's a lot of 'we,' the word, 'we,' so it kind of naturally fell that way. But everything else planted here was for the future, so, yeah, we're in talks."

Asked specifically if he intends to expand on that big G.I. Joe tease, Caple added: "I would love to. I have some ideas on how to branch out that part of the IP. If I can do this crossover that I plan on doing, I think there's a way to still feed the fans what we want in Transformers films, but also do something cool with another legendary IP, so to speak. I would be excited and thrilled."

It's clearly still early days, but we can't help wondering how this crossover will play out. An argument could surely be made that it would make the most sense not to be beholden to previous G.I. Joe movies, introducing new versions of those characters with different actors playing them.

After all, how better to launch a new franchise after this Transformers crossover than with a new cast fans actually want to see in action?

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is currently playing in theaters.

There is no way in hell they’ll connect those god awful GI Joe movies. Expect a full reboot on the GI Joe side.

@Order66 - hilariously they could connect it to the robot suits from the first movie.

Ugh. I know nerds who spent their entire lives waiting for Hollywood to make an Avengers movie where all their favorite Marvel characters got to share the screen together. I know nerds who spent their lives waiting for Hollywood to make a movie with Batman and Superman sharing the screen together. I know nerds who are eagerly anticipating a big shared universe Nintendo movie with Mario, Link, Samus and more all teaming-up to fight evil.

I know exactly zero nerds who want a Transformers/GI Joe crossover movie. Zero.

@santoanderson - I've wanted one all my life since Cobra Commander was in a G.I. Joe episode way back when. I wanted one after the 1st Joe live-action movie and the second one.

Give me more bots, cons, and a combiner. Bring back some bots like Ironhide, ratchet, jazz and Sideswipe as a red countach. I also think Prowl and Ultra magnus are way overdue for a movie appearance.

This was better than Bumblebee imo. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

@GhostDog - Really?! the Transformers movie that copied all the plots of the previous movies, while stealing multiple ideas from the MCU.....I mean the original movies soundtrack randomly starts, with Optimus bullshiting one of his speeches, I turned to my brother and asked what year it is?? the Autobots themselves were good...but generic bullshit at its worst otherwise

I loved it for what it was, but it bugged me the maximals were basically treated as just other transformers. Their interesting lore was glossed over in the most headscratching ways. They were clearly just there for marketing and exposition.

@Origame - Besides the way the Maximals looked I really was disappointed. Hated all their voices except Rhinox and the missing lore was huge. One of the biggest reasons people consider Beast Wars the best Transformer stuff or at least top 3 or 2 is cause of all the lore mythology it adds to the franchise and the connections it makes between Autobots and their descendants.

The major complaint for these films has ALWAYS been the focus on the humans. We want MORE Transformers and less humans. Why TF would you add MORE humans? Get some people that actually like Transformers to make these movies. Travis Knight showed he loved the IP. Get him back or get another diretor/writer that does. And... G.I Joe are lame af. Like, wtf are they going to to against a Transformer?

I had a great time with this sequel, especially in the actual arc that Optimus went through from being very apprehensive of working with Noah and the humans while dealing with his own list of failures to the Autobots (Bee's momentary death managed to hit the feels) to reaching a point by the end where he was willing to sacrifice for them.

Scourage was a legit threat and I became a fan of Primal once he showed up with the rest of the Maximals. His scene where he had to put out Airazor out of mercy was also sad, we finally have to care about all these robots.

Plus the fact that they gave an accurate portrayal of Peru and the city of Cusco in the entire 2nd half of the movie was pretty cool, made me feel proud of seeing my country well represented. Even Michael Kelly's nod of how good the food is was spot on. XD (Also Primal speaking Quechua was a nice touch)

I hope the G.I. Joe crossover plans come well to fruition.

And oh yeah, hearing "Arrival to Earth" after they defeated Scourage was the adequate 2017 nostalgia hit, I like that the theme has remained over the years as the Transformers' official leitmotif. They renamed it here, but it's still the same epic tune.

"Till all are one."
