DOCTOR WHO Season 15 Is Already Being Written; Russell T Davies Reveals Season 14's Episode Count

Russell T Davies was tasked with bringing Doctor Who back to television in 2005, and the writer has since become synonymous with the franchise. While he happily passed the reigns of the hit sci-fi series to other creatives following that successful run, the news of his return has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response.

Davies will oversee this year's specials starring David Tennant before forging ahead with a new era of storytelling revolving around Ncuti Gatwa's Fourteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson as his companion, Ruby Sunday. He'll do so with an increased budget too, courtesy of BBC's recent streaming deal with Disney+.

His ambitious plans look set to play out over multiple years as he confirmed during a recent interview with Doctor Who Magazine (via SFFGazette.com) that work has already begun on scripts for season 15 (season 14 premieres in 2024).

"There isn't time to pause, as we leap on to the 2025 season," Davies explained. "Right now, four scripts are being written simultaneously, including this one, right here in front of me, which you won't see until the year after next."

In the same conversation, the Doctor Who showrunner finally confirmed how many episodes we're getting in season 14. "All five blocks [are] in production," he said, "with eight regular episodes plus four Specials in varying states of readiness."

Despite the increased budget, this will make the next season the shortest since the six-episode miniseries arc Doctor Who: Flux starring Jodie Whittaker.

With Disney+ getting involved, as much as triple is expected to be spent on the show from season to season, giving the franchise its best chance yet to break into the mainstream alongside hit shows like The Mandalorian and Star Trek: Discovery

Everything we've seen from showrunner Russell T Davies' return to Doctor Who suggests the beloved show has been given a fresh lick of paint, and we can't wait to find out where he plans to take the Doctor and his new companion!

Nice back up to 12 episodes with no long breaks between season. This show needs its momentum back (and good writing)

As a Doctor Who fan for all my life until recently I hope this thing fails big time. He doesn't want to retcon the garbage that was written in the last few years so I am antagonistic towards continuing a broken and shit franchise. I'll always be thankful for his new Who and bringing back my beloved franchise but now F him.

@WarMonkey - I just figured that he'd completely ignore it like the human hybrid stuff with the 8th doctor.

@WarMonkey - By all means, if you don’t like it then don’t watch. I didn’t watch the last few seasons myself. But for your reason to be some dumb thing introduced into the continuity, in a show notorious for its ridiculous and contradictory continuity where literally every dumb thing is canon, well, that’s just silly.

@Superspecialawesomeguy - This was easily excused because the Doctor "Lies". Timeless Child is the canon of who the Doctor is now. I did love this movie and he was great as the Doctor though but ya that half human thing was just a terrible idea lol

Seeing as the shortest was last season the articles “this will make next season the shortest” needs some better writing.

8 quality episodes is better than a lot of shitty ones in between, especially with how lighting fast pacing in the modern era is (classic Who seasons were way longer, but the *much* slower pacing mostly countered that). As long as it's focused on what it wants to do, Flux could have really worked if it didn't spend the first half completely side-tracked, another great example is RTD's own Series 3, the first half is dogshit until they hit the 2nd half.

The Whittaker specials were a return to form for Doctor Who, nothing crazy, but mostly just good old-fashion, Doctor Who.
