Grant Morrison Reviews Lanterns: Criticizes Unrecognizable Hal Jordan, "Glaring" Lack Of Costumes, Constructs

Green Lantern comic book writer Grant Morrison has shared his verdict on the Lanterns premiere, and he walked away largely unimpressed by the show's "low-fi" take on the Green Lantern Corps.

Lanterns came under fire from the start for trailers that featured little space-set action, no superhero costumes, and a distinct lack of the colour green (Green Lantern constructs, meanwhile, were also largely absent). HBO Max's social accounts mocked unhappy fans, while Damon Lindelof later said the series was called Lanterns because "we all agreed that the 'Green' was stupid."

Acclaimed All-Star SupermanBatman, and Green Lantern comic book writer Grant Morrison issued a blistering response and publicly criticised Lindelof's "jockish dismayal of superhero conventions." Ultimately, they both apologised to each other for their remarks, and Lanterns has become a critical hit for DC Studios.

Despite that, many fans have remained critical of how Lanterns has handled its comic book elements; the second episode, for example, only features a single construct: a small bird imagined into existence by John Stewart.

Taking to his Xanaduum Substack, Morrison shared his review of the Lanterns premiere and appears largely unimpressed. Admitting he felt "obliged" to watch after criticising "the glib dismissal of the colour green by writer and producer Damon Lindelof," the writer said he "liked Aaron Pierre’s quiet and uptight performance as John Stewart."

However, "[I] thought Kyle Chandler anchored the show with a great turn as Doctor McCoy, but he wasn’t any Hal Jordan I recognised. Willpower and booze don’t mix for a start." Despite that, Morrison intends to "stick with it for the engaging Chandler."

"Otherwise, on this outing, way too much tell, not enough show, and those comparisons to True Detective, invoking season 1 of that show, only worked against Lanterns," he continued. "The lack of costumes and ring effects was glaring but easily explained by budgetary constraints and a desire to create some distance between this and the unsuccessful Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern film."

"[It] only begs the question of why try to make a Green Lantern show on a budget at all? DC has a ton of 'ground level' heroes, or characters with low-level gimmick powers to choose from, so why take this low-fi route with a franchise that should be competing with Star Trek or Star Wars?" Morrison mused, acknowledging that "mainstream reviews of the show are pretty positive."

The prolific writer's comments echo those of fans. However, most have been able to look beyond that thanks to Lanterns' compelling mystery and two standout performances from its leads.

While the DCU's Hal doesn't seem to have much in common with the comics, there are definite similarities, and Chandler has captured the spirit of an older take on the character than the one seen on the page. As for the lack of costumes and Green Lantern constructs, there's still time for the next six episodes to deliver on the "cosmic" front.

The first two episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max.

@CreateNowSlpL8r - Damon Lindelof is a hit or miss for me, but I wouldn't call him an idiot. He likes to create mystery and ambiguity by messing with the source material like he did with the Watchmen Tv Show. HBO is hoping to repeat the same success and accolades as Watchmen which was on a lower budget too.

Personally with Watchmen, I was split on it too because having read the comic book he geared the TV Show sequel towards something Alan Moore didn't intend and the character's personality are vastly different from the comic. With Green Lantern I think he's trying to do the same by making Hal Jordan a representation of the comic book fans who won't accept change and John Stewart is that new Gen Z mindset thats supposed to carry the franchise forward with change.

I thought I'd hate older Hal Jordan, but so far Chandler is easily the best part of this show. I do agree that the costume and lack of constructs so far are disappointing.

I totally agree with him.

This would be so much better if it was Hellblazer show with John trying to solve a murder in a small town that had demonic underpinnings. They could’ve partnered him with Dr Fate, Jason Blood, Zatanna or even Deadman who could body hope into different characters or only be visible to Constantine.

I like it so far, I like the feel of it being a Green Lanterns show set within a True Detectives like atmosphere. We have enough comic-bookey lookin shows and colorful costumes in the DCU, I'd like to see some variety. This reminds me of the Defenders/Netflix DD/Punisher kind of adult oriented shows set in the kid/young adult friendly environment of the MCU.

@Shmokey20 - the point Grant is making, is that there are other characters they could've used for this gritty route.

There’s a lot of shit in green lantern and feels like people want them to do all of it at once

The other issue with GL depending on your age the GL you like is really 1 of 3 people (Hal, John, and Kyle, Guy fans only exist to be ironic) and thus who do you center it around ? I like the show so far I’m also ok with seeing how things play out which is the key of lindeloff shows they’re all slow burners sorry to the crowd that wants hot out the gate

Chandler is so damn charming and compelling that I dig his take but I see Morrison's point. Agree on the low-fi point too, as I do wish this was a little more Star Trek in scope and investment.

I don't disagree with Morrison's points, but those are the same reasons I enjoy it and I think it will service opening up the larger world of the Lanterns to the mainstream.

I wonder if there were a bigger budget if they would have more constructs or if this was always the plan for this particular story.

@epc1122 - given that apparently the True Detective-esque idea came in early on , I’m assuming they adjusted the budget around that.

Lolz. It's called a creative choice. Lindelof sticks to his style and it is great so far.

If you haters want slop, go wait for Doomsday or rewatch Secret Invasion.

You have to think about it from the perspective of a corporate executive.

Supergirl lost over 200 million dollars. People clearly just aren't interested in space stories.

They're in the process of trying to sell the company. We have to make up for that massive loss. For at least a few years, the projects will need to be more cost effective: shot in the LA desert, actors and extras wearing their normal clothes rather than expensive costumes, get AI to come up with the designs for characters and sets, etc.

@JusticeL - Very true. But again, from the perspective of a corporate executive: "Who the heck is the Question?" and "Would people actually watch a show about Martian Manhunter where he looks like a regular person 95% of the time?" or "We already did a Green Arrow show and it sucked!"

I'm not the biggest Grant Morrison fan (Outside of Arkham Asylum and All-Star Superman) but I've always respected HIS respect and knowledge of the comic book creators and characters that came before and how they shape the lore of the characters that we know so well today, but I’m inclined to side with him on this show.

Especially y on this statement: "[It] only begs the question of why try to make a Green Lantern show on a budget at all? DC has a ton of 'ground level' heroes, or characters with low-level gimmick powers to choose from, so why take this low-fi route with a franchise that should be competing with Star Trek or Star Wars?"

So true. But I am still intrigue to see where this is going.
