"Happy To See How So Many Have Embraced It" - James Gunn's X Post Hyping Up Lanterns Finale Is Getting Ratioed

Ahead of last night's Lanterns finale, James Gunn sent out an X post hyping up the episode, which is now being flooded with negative replies...

Though he did approve the idea for Lanterns, James Gunn wasn't directly involved with the creative process. Even so, the DC Studios co-CEO seems to be fairly hands-on with every project that's given the green light, and no doubt had some input in the development of the HBO Max series.

Even if he didn't, the Superman director's social media presence makes every post a beacon for criticism, and last night's Lanterns finale tease has been getting ratioed since the episode streamed.

Lanterns has been a big hit with critics (the full season is sitting at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes), and a major ratings success to boot, with the season averaging above 12 million viewers per episode to date in the U.S. and nearly 19 million when factoring in international stats. But for many DC Comics fans familiar with these characters, the positive aspects didn't outweigh the perceived "character assassination" of John Stewart and Hal Jordan - Hal, in particular.

A lot of people have been letting Gunn know exactly how they felt about "Dirt and Stars," which has proven to be somewhat divisive even among those who had been on board for the previous seven episodes.

Gunn previously addressed the criticisms of the show in a recent Threads post.

"I'd say avid comics readers are well aware of the differences from universe to universe. Whether it's the DCU or Earth 0 or the Absolute Universe, they all pay homage to these iconic characters, retelling their stories in different ways. Heck, even the MCU combined elements of the Ultimate universe, the 616, and original ideas."

"That's how these things work," he added. "But if you want the DCU to take the exact trajectory of whatever your favorite comics continuity is, that's probably not going to happen."

You can check out the comments by clicking on the post below.

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Lol give it a rest you guys. The show was a massive success with critics and audiences. Collider just reported that Season 2 is in the works.

@NHartMusic - So if a lot of people start idolising a big pile of shit others should all respect that and ignore the fact that it’s a big pile of shit?

@Urubrodi - you are entitled to your opinion as are users of Twitter. I enjoyed it a lot. The massive viewership and majority of critics and user reviews appear to agree with me.

@NHartMusic - I loved the show overall and liked elements of the finale, but just have a look at his post to see how many didn't.

@MarkCassidy - because a few thousand people on Twitter mean more than the millions of viewers the show had that liked it

@MarkCassidy - It sucked man. live with it. A manhunter knocks up a chick, and she...to protect her manhunter child, kills Hal Jordan, a Green Lantern...with a police standard issue pistol. Makes perfect [frick]ing sense.

@NHartMusic - I know it's only a small demographic and the show was very popular with general audiences, but in this instance it is a pretty good indicator of how a lot of comic book fans felt.

Also, it should go without saying that popularity isn't necessarily an indicator of quality.

@NHartMusic - That’s not really how a public forum works. People post their opinions on here. You’re entitled to yours, but people that didn’t like it have every right to voice theirs.

I didn’t think the finale was great, but overall I liked the show quite a bit. 7/10 from me.

Ok, show. Had some solid moments. Could’ve upped the Green Lantern lore a bit more for me. 7/10. Let’s see what they do with season 2.

Side note, someone said this makes them think Battinsons Batman would work in the DCU and after watching this I agree. Make it so!

It's a shame because I thought the show was pretty good....and then the finale ruined it.

Get what they were going for but it's almost like a drinking game out of the 1000 excuses they have to not do "something" from the comics. It's like Smallville ALL OVER AGAIN.

Also with how much they left open, it makes no sense and just leaves more pointless questions that could have just been answered instead of lingering on a "will they? won't they?" for a new season.

After Velma, this is the second HBO show that made the grifters seem sane.

Congratulations, Jimmy. You earned that.
