Lanterns’ latest episode, "Bad Optics," opens in Midway City in 2026. John Stewart has reconciled with his brother, Marcus, and used his skills as an architect to build safe rooms for people. He uses what happened in Metropolis as an example of why people need protections and even refers to a "giant starfish," a nod to Starro in the now-canonical James Gunn DCEU movie, The Suicide Squad.

John gets a call from his mother, who tells him that Hal, no longer in prison, is now back in Rushville and eager to apologise. It turns out she befriended Hal while he was locked up, and a disgruntled John reluctantly goes to meet his former mentor at a cafe. Hal is surprised to see him, and makes it clear he has no intention of saying sorry, given that there’s more than one killer at the table. After accusing John of being scared, the former Marine breaks Hal’s nose and storms out, though the fallen hero asks that John not tell anyone he’s there for some reason.

John is soon called back to Nebraska by Sheriff Kerry, where the scene of them discovering Hal’s body from the premiere plays out (of course, this time, we know that John broke his nose, not the killer). She and Hal struck up a romance, largely because he came back to Rushville and tried to make amends with people by doing jobs for them...despite being hated by the townspeople. Back at Hal’s place, John reunites with Earl, and after the Medical Examiner declares that Hal was shot and killed at close range, John lights Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern signal (it was his way of making amends to the town for what Hal and John did). Billy and his friends aren’t happy, and a scuffle follows that leads to John being locked up in the town jail.

Guy shows up the next morning, and after John makes it clear that the Green Lantern has everything he does now because he turned it down, Guy agrees to go and get Hal’s costume and ring from Oa so he can be buried in it. During their meeting, Guy mentions that someone has broken Sinestro out of prison, which Hal would have been a prime suspect for, had he not been locked up at the time. The mystery of two rings is solved, too, as Guy was given a new one when Hal’s was decommissioned by the Guardians of the Universe. Kerry’s son, Noah, brings John a suit, and Hal’s funeral takes place with only John, Kerry, and Carol Ferris (Hal's main love interest in the comics and the hero known as Star Sapphire isn't given more than a few lines) in attendance. John reads the eulogy Hal wrote for himself over the hero’s grave, and seems genuinely broken up about what’s happened to him.

There are a few other interesting notes from throughout the episode, including John and Kerry finding Hal's pocket dimension (it needs Hal to activate it) and the girl John apologised to at the end of last episode now fully grown and demanding hundreds of thousands of dollars in reparations in exchange for keeping her silence about seeing him punch Hal the night he died.

In the closing moments of the episode, John digs up Hal’s grave and takes the ring off his finger. It has 5% charge, which is enough to summon the Halogram. They stand over Hal’s body together, with the 2006 Hal exclaiming, “Goddammit,” as the episode ends.

So, who killed Hal? Is it Noah, who hopes to become President? That certainly seems like something a kid with Manhunter programming might strive for. Could it be the girl in the cafe? Is that even Hal in the coffin, or a Manhunter imposter who tried to win over Rushville by doing favours for people and seducing Kerry? The plot has thickened as we head into the final two episodes.

Six episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max.

Cue the persons continuing to defend this. "You have never read the books and know nothing about Green Lanterns." Now we have no Hal with a justice league being formed, shot and killed, John breaking Hals nose as a final goodwill gesture, and wow, John digging up Hals grave and taking the ring off his finger? So was really sincere during the funeral or was pretending and was after the ring. Or both? "Don't worry it's all in there. Somewhere". No Hal and Barry team up, no Hal and Oli because no, that does not exist in the books. And on and on. Okay.

@hue66 - Have none of you ever read a single Elseworlds book? Ultimate Universe? Between JLA, post-Crisis, Flashpoint, New 52, Young Justice, Infinite Frontier, Green Lantern: Beware My Power, Absolute Green Lantern, how many different versions of John Stewart have we gotten in the past 20 years?

But oh no, new version bad because not exactly one of the previous versions. Grow up and let a writer write.

@ItsAllOurBlood - Right on cue "You have never read the books and know nothing about Green Lanterns." Can you point to specific books where the things I listed happened? Hal shot and killed, John digging up Hals grave and taking the ring? John breaking his nose or the many other major changes? I don't have an issue with expanding on the source but it would help if you can reference something similar.
ItsAllOurBlood
ItsAllOurBlood - 9/21/2026, 6:06 AM
@hue66 - You're the one proving the point. None of the "source" material existed until a writer wrote it. Stewart wasn't even a Marine until the Justice League cartoon. You're watching a new canon for a new universe unfold in front of you, so stop complaining that no one can provide you an issue number and panel. This is a new John, in a new universe, nothing you've read matters, and if you don't like it, you don't have to watch, because the DCU and Lanterns are made for people who can take in new information.

hue66 - 9/21/2026, 7:07 AM
@ItsAllOurBlood - it's okay. You're looking for something drastically different from the books. Some of us are looking for something that more closely resembles the books deviations and all. Certainly not John speaking at Hals funeral then as soon as no one's looking, digs up his coffin and take Hals ring. To each his own.
TheRevelation
TheRevelation - 9/21/2026, 8:49 AM
@hue66 - He literally thinks it's not Hal, given his past in Rushville. I'm not entirely sure it wasn't Hal that freed Sinestro. Yeah Sinestro escaped and irl it could be a throw away line, but it's a TV show on HBO. I doubt it's a coincidence.
TheRevelation
TheRevelation - 9/21/2026, 8:56 AM
@ItsAllOurBlood - I don't even think they've read the mainline, let alone the peripheral stuff. That time Hal knew he was with a 13 yr old, but she had a grown body so it was OK. The Parallax story before DC decided they should explain away his villanous turn. It even took Bats some time to get over it. Memory on here for some is like Wikipedia apparently.

Doesn’t mean all adaptations are good but folks how 0 idea how much shit on tv and movies are adaptations with a lot of changes

@hue66 - John digging up Hals grave and taking the ring off his finger?
Exactly. Why doesn’t Guy have Hal’s ring. Oh wait, it’s because Nathan Fillion is James Gunn’s friend and he wants both Guy and John to be GL’s in this universe despite the first 5 episodes establishing there can only be one ring per sector.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 9/21/2026, 9:35 AM
@soberchimera - I assume you also hated when the comics have established multiple lanterns and now there’s like 7 earth ones
krayzeman
krayzeman - 9/21/2026, 9:38 AM
@hue66 - You did get what you want! Back in 2011 they came out with a movie called Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds! That didnt work apparently. So you want them to run what didnt work back? Like they tried to do with X-Men Dark Pheonix twice and Supergirl twice?? Gotta cut your losses and try something different. DC is showing Marvel how you do a TV series set in a movie universe and its working like a charm!
soberchimera
soberchimera - 9/21/2026, 9:40 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - It’s what the SHOW established, and now they’re contradicting what they’ve established without a proper explanation. If the show established that sectors can have multiple Lanterns, then there would have been no need for animosity between Jordan and Stewart because Hal wouldn’t have felt he was being replaced.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 9/21/2026, 9:48 AM
@soberchimera - the comic contradicts itself then when it retconned the lore about 1 lantern per sector

I don’t understand why you all are ok when the comic changed something 50 years ago but it’s not ok for a tv show . Just go read the books and leave it alone if you want that story
Baf

@hue66 -
Hal and John have had conflict in the comics — yes.

John has replaced Hal — yes.

John has inherited a ring from another Lantern — yes.

Hal has died — yes.

John has been a major Justice League member — yes.

Hal has had important relationships with other DC heroes — yes.

The Green Lantern mythos has been radically reinvented before — absolutely.

Lanterns is not a literal adaptation. If you have indeed read the books, you can easily see how the changes are still rooted in the mythology, characters, conflicts and relationships that made the comics work in the first place.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 9/21/2026, 9:54 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - At least the comic EXPLAINED why a sector can have multiple Lanterns. If the Guardians are forcing John to take Hal’s ring BY FORCE that’s a pretty clear indicator that there can only be one. If they’re going to make an entirely separate ring for Guy instead of giving him Hal’s ring (which still works by the way), they need to provide an in-universe explanation for why a sector can now have 2 active rings.

I dont like how they made Hal a criminal. He tries to prevent Antans group from blowing up the town and he goes to prison . Wtf. And Zoe is raining lasers from spave down on its people and he was somehow at fault. Why is everyone mad at him.
CarpesDiems
CarpesDiems - 9/21/2026, 5:04 AM
@knighted - me neither, but its been pretty much the main thème of the show to spit on jotdans figure so it didbt shocked me that. I did like the fact that they included the fact he came back to rushville to help people in any way possiblr even if he was hated so much.that's the real hal jordan.
RealTurner
RealTurner - 9/21/2026, 6:19 AM
@knighted - I wish they had explained that better. The brainwashed people of the town hate him for antagonising Zoe and making it all happen, perhaps; she said it would all fall on him, but that's like "I'll shoot this cat if you do something I don't like and it will be your fault" logic that shouldn't hold up in court.
Arthorious
Arthorious - 9/21/2026, 7:55 AM
@knighted - I’d say their care for Zoe since she brought a lot of help to the town. But if I’m being honest, they should be glad that she’s gone since she basically made everyone in debt to her.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 9/21/2026, 8:59 AM
@RealTurner - those people weren’t brainwashed they voluntarily chose to side with Zoe

so far i hated almost everything on this show besides the acting which i think its pretty solid.I thought i was gonna hate this episode, the final mail on jordans coffin, but funely enough i enjoyed it for what it was, we got a glimpse of the real hal jordan...we all know and love from comics...i just hope this isnt the end for hal..

Gunn and Lindelof think they are brilliant minds recreating the DC comics universe in their own twisted images of how it should be.

And we will get to see the great DC brand destroyed a second time by these self important idiots who think they are visionaries.

They are juvenile minded older adults who think they are building something when they are just tearing it down.

What the hell did Hal Jordan do that landed him in prison? An evil alien robot took over a town and through various means had control over everyone in that town (not to mention space lasers) and then Jordan (and Stewart) stopped said alien and some of the alien’s human conspirators died? So what? It was the evil alien robot targeting them to run Hal’s ring down to zero. That is some nonsense there.
Arthorious
Arthorious - 9/21/2026, 7:59 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - it seems like most of the town was in on it (remember the city hall scene from episode 2). And perhaps Zoe was really able to brainwash most of them so I can get their aggression towards Hal.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 9/21/2026, 8:05 AM
@Arthorious - How does that land him in a federal prison though?
ShimmyShimmyYA

@TheUnworthyThor - the govt doesn’t know it was a manhunter that they were tracking they just know Hal Jordan [frick]ed a town up
soberchimera
soberchimera - 9/21/2026, 9:18 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - There are literal satellites in orbit owned by Macon. They could have easily been tracked backed to him like they did in episode 4. Plus there are dozens of eye witnesses that saw Hal saving people from said satellites. The townspeople hating Hal when it was Zoe and Macon destroying the town makes absolutely no sense. The writers just wanted something to happen in the show without properly explaining it.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 9/21/2026, 9:34 AM
@soberchimera - you clearly aren’t paying attention so let me break it down for you

The townspeople were in on the plan with Zoe if you paid attention last episode it was said they know they might die to defend her . They were not hostages they were co-conspirators the town worshipped her. Why would they be ok with Hal killing her / ruining their town that was basically paradise ? I have 0 problem with people disliking a show but seriously if you all are gonna critique it at least pay attention to actually be aware of what you’re criticizing
soberchimera
soberchimera - 9/21/2026, 9:45 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - Why would they be ok with Zoe killing them with satellite death lasers? Seems like a good time to switch sides. They’re either extremely stupid or just brainwashed. Plus how did they sell the idea that Hal killed Zoe when he was buried under rubble and John’s prints were on the gun that killed her? Maybe YOU need to rewatch the show.
