Lanterns Episode 7 Hits 7 Million Viewers In U.S.; Season Averages Almost 19M Viewers Per Episode Worldwide

Not everyone has been singing Lanterns' praises (to put it mildly), but the series continues to be a major ratings hit for DC Studios and HBO Max...

Despite a highly positive critical reception, Lanterns certainly has its share of detractors, and the decision to kill off Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) in the closing moments of the series premiere has only proven to be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to fan pushback.

Even so, the series has become a major ratings hit for DC Studios and HBO Max, and the show continued to burn bright with Sunday's penultimate episode.

According to Variety, "The Jordan Boys' Legacy" reached 7 million viewers in the U.S. in its first three days of availability, with the season averaging above 12 million viewers per episode to date in the U.S. and nearly 19 million when factoring in international stats.

Lanterns still hasn't been officially renewed for a second season, but a new writing team has been assembled in anticipation of the greenlight. Chris Mundy is expected to return as showrunner, without writers Damon Lindelof and Tom King. Vanessa Baden Kelly will be back, along with new scribes Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, and Selwyn Seyfu Hinds.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn addressed the criticisms of the show in a recent Threads post.

"I'd say avid comics readers are well aware of the differences from universe to universe. Whether it's the DCU or Earth 0 or the Absolute Universe, they all pay homage to these iconic characters, retelling their stories in different ways. Heck, even the MCU combined elements of the Ultimate universe, the 616, and original ideas."

"That's how these things work," he added. "But if you want the DCU to take the exact trajectory of whatever your favorite comics continuity is, that's probably not going to happen."

This Sunday's season finale is titled "Dirt and Stars," and you can check out some intriquing new footage in the teaser below.

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

I slogged through episode 7 over a couple of days. It was weak. I am quickly losing interest in Lanterns -- it is all over the place.

@GeneralZod - the Ryan Reynolds movie still exists, and has all the fx, the dlavish adherence to the source material, the costumes, the space stuff, the giant green fists…

Enjoy

@Rpendo - First Flight and the animated series exist. And Emerald Knights too I guess is what a person with acceptable taste in GL would recommend.

Interesting take. There’s reports and articles that are on polar opposites of each other regarding the ratings and success of Lanterns.

@FireGunn - I haven’t been on that site very long so I’m not sure about it’s accuracy historically, but it does echo several articles that have appeared here too. I just found it interesting that there’s two conflicting narratives regarding the show’s success.

Either way, the show is shit and does a disservice to Green Lantern fans.

@dotherightthing - Episode 7 got a bit more cosmic with them going off planet. A very errie alien planet at that.

It's a slow burn but they seem to be heading more in that direction more.

@Nomis929 - Season two hasn't been ordered as of yet. Also...

‘LANTERNS’ Showrunner, Chris Mundy, on what he wants audiences to take away from the season finale next week:

“I hope you take away that we told a full beginning to end story and that any questions you have are answered. That emotionally you feel like there’s closure in every direction with everybody there. If we didn’t end the story, we did a bad job. But if we didn’t also leave it open for emotional threads to could go off into to the world that you’d want to watch, then we also didn’t do our job. I want you to feel like ‘aww it ended, but I’m psyched to get back.’

Sweet , congrats to the cast & crew of the show thus hopefully we can hopefully hear about a Lanterns S2 soon or atleast what the future holds for the likes of John Stewart post MOT!!.

This show (or atleast this take on Green Lantern) isn’t for everyone but I personally have liked it quite a bit so far due the writing but especially the performances which have helped elevate the characters as they develop & grow more which I’ve also enjoyed.

Obviously , I would love if there was more comicbooky-ness to it then it actually has but it’s still a well done show that I have liked quite a bit…

I would give it a 8.1 out of 10 right now so hopefully the finale wraps it up well after which it would be my favorite DCU project so far topping Superman!!.

@TheVisionary25 - 7.7-7.8 for me. With any mystery, the ending means everything. How they bring it all together is how I’ll rate it in totality. Though I do not think it’ll go lower. It not has potential to be more.

This show is complete garbage. Nothing can redeem it.

Viewership does not always mean quality. Thor 4 made nearly 800 million, and that was pure trash.

@MyCoolYoung - I think you may be suffering burnout , not just or solely because of the content but just all the BS noise around them whether it be arguments or rumors…

It all becomes too much to the point where you get tired of it and I get it because I’m kind of going through the same thing.

There’s not much stuff I’m genuinely excited for anymore and that’s a bummer.

Almost never happens...in fact...when comicbook movies do it as close as possible...no one supports it...and mostly fails.

@BlackStar25 - plus if comic book writers can create new stories for these characters then why can’t filmmakers?.
