Lanterns Finale Spoilers: Will We See Hal Jordan Again? Series Creative Team Weighs In

The first season of Lanterns came to an end last night with an expectedly divisive episode, which confirmed that Hal Jordan is well and truly expired. But is there a chance the character could return?

Lanterns came to an end last night with an introspective season finale that, while light on spectacle, did deliver answers to the show's central mysteries. Most specifically, who killed Hal Jordan, and is the veteran ring-slinging hero really dead?

After an initial misdirect that Manhunter/human hybrid Noah Macon pulled the trigger, we later learn that his mother, Sheriff Kerry Kane, actually killed the man she loved (or at least, cared deeply about) when he told her that he knew what Noah really was.

There was a lot of speculation that "dead Hal" was either a corpse of one of the shape-shifting aliens or a clone, but no, the Hal Jordan is officially deceased in the DCU.

There are some hints that the character could somehow return (Sinestro mentions a possible resurrection) down the line, but it doesn't sound like anything has been mapped out... yet.

"I definitely don't want to speculate about the answer to that question," co-creator Damon Lindelof tells Collider when asked whether we might see Jordan again. "I can only tell you that everybody in the Season 1 room, inclusive of the writers who are working on Season 2, felt like, even though we knew that it was going to be emotionally devastating and/or disappointing and maybe even frustrating, that the worst possible schmuck-baity thing that we could do is show you a pilot where Hal Jordan was definitively dead, and then try to walk it back and say, 'Oh, he was a clone,' or 'He's only mostly dead' in the Princess Bride vernacular. In terms of moving forward into subsequent seasons of the show, I swear to you, as I look at you in the eye on Wednesday this 30th of September, I do not know anything about the creative, and I wouldn't want to hamstring those writers in any way for what future storytelling mechanisms they could indulge in.

Knowing what the comics have done with Parallax and Hal, I think, has died at least 3 or 4 times over the course of the canon, and celebrating everything that Kyle did in his performance to get the audience to fall in love with Hal. So I think that honoring the emotional impact and making Season 1 feel felt. The question that you're asking would be the equivalent of, 'Would I want to see a movie called Ghost 2 where Patrick Swayze was alive again?' And the answer is, I would not, because it would degrade the emotional impact of Ghost. But where there's a will, there's a way. Where there's will, there's a way."

Some fans were initially resistant to Kyle Chandler's casting, but most would agree that the Friday Night Lights alum knocked it out of the park as an older, jaded Jordan - so much so that there was uproar when the character was killed off at the end of the premiere.

Unfortunately, showrunner Chris Mundy gave a less optimistic response to the possibility of Hal's return while speaking to Brandon Davis.

“It’s absolutely the end of the season and the end of [John and Hal’s] relationship. I think our intent was always just that, to close that off emotionally. That’s the best way to say it. I know there are people that love the idea of Hal going forward but… I would never say never to anything, but it’s also like that closed the book on our story for this season.”

What did you make of "Dirt and Stars"? Do you think we'll see Hal Jordan again in some capacity? Drop us a comment down below, and check out some new stills from the finale.

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

What absolute garage. Just like his whole “we had to kill Hal to tell this story and if you still feel like we shouldn’t have by the end episode 8, we deserve the hate.”

You deserve the [frick]ing hate.

It doesn't make any sense that Guy Gardner would step up to Superman and say, "Make your move Big Blue", but is easily intimidated by a powerless John Stewart.

VANESSA BADEN KELLY: "It actually makes plenty of sense. Guy Gardner is a racist. He's a man of a certain age that grew up in a certain time and place. He probably uses the N-word amongst the other Lanterns. He has never encountered a strong and confident black man before."

I don’t think we see Hal again. Maybe the Hal-ogram somehow. He tells John he’s his subconscious so maybe he wills him back.

You know…

You always hear certain people or Hollywood writer say “well we don’t wanna bring them back because it cheapens the Film, series or scene which this character died in.”

What you never hear is, “ yeah they killed Spock in Star Trek II and it was one of the most devastating scenes and yet they brought him back, and it led to some great future films a great crossover in the next generation and didn’t do anything to diminish the film Star Trek II.”

🤷‍♂️

The fact that he wanted to protect Noah and mention going off world, makes it sting even more. He kind of died for nothing given that Noah is still allowed to walk around and Kerry too. But maybe I’m looking at it wrong.

@MisterBones - You're not, it just doesn't make any sense. If Hal had threatened Noah that would have been one thing, but he literally said he'd do everything he could to protect him.
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 10/5/2026, 9:22 AM
@MarkCassidy - Yeah but Kerry didn’t want to uproot him. She wanted Noah to continue to lead his normal life. John comes and suggests basically the opposite of what Hal did.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 10/5/2026, 9:28 AM
@OmegaBlack13 - Sure... but would that lead her to KILL someone - especially someone she cared for? I get that they tried to make it seem like a gut reaction or whatever, but nobody who isn't a complete psychopath would do that.

@MarkCassidy - I dunno man, outside of John's parents I would kill if there was a possibility of my child being endangered..especially after having already seen so much destruction in that town... Also remember that when Hal was in GL/cop mode, he was lieing and manipulating a bit when he was trying to uncover the alien threat.

Now with him confirming to Kerry he knows about her son, she could also think he was finding another way to lie to then take out another threat.

That's my way of looking at it.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 10/5/2026, 10:11 AM
@UnderBelly - But he wasn't threatening him! All he suggested was that they leave so that the people of Rushville - who Kerry is supposed to be protecting - and her son would be safe. It just didn't work for me... and despite what they may say in interviews, it felt very much like making Kerry was a late deciison that they had to scramble to find a reason for.
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 10/5/2026, 10:36 AM
@MarkCassidy - Na i hear you, there were definitely things that didn't work for me either, but that wasn't one of them.

He didn't threaten him, but her son's secret (and hers) was revealed in that moment to her... And given Hal's history with the last Manhunter and the fallout...with also the thought of being away from the town where she would have the power to protect him...i could understand the impulse reaction to shoot and then followed by the instant regret...and then calling John back look into how deep she may have gotten it wrong (self sabotage)..

It was done ok to me, it Could have been fleshed out a bit more, but ultimately I got it.

@MarkCassidy - Yeah the death didnt work for me either. I tried to rationalize it by oh is this the Hal Jordan losing to love/Star Sapphire comic book trope but more subversive and tragic but yeah it doesn't make sense. I think its made even worse when there are no consequences for what she did. I love the show but yeah this part sticks out like a sore thumb.

You know what I would like to see? Sinestro train a young Hal Jordan then Hal finds out what Sinestro has been doing and has to take on and defeat his mentor. Call me crazy but that’s a good story I’d like to see play out on film. Why does it feel like DC in live action film (and this TV show) no matter who is in charge likes to skip over all these interesting stories and go straight into stories that movie world isn’t to that point yet?
hue66
hue66 - 10/5/2026, 9:38 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - That's not good enough. Let's turn Hal racist, have him and John beat up each other and betray each other, kill off Hal with a bullet who helped form the JLA before it's formed, have John dig up his grave and take the ring after speaking at his funeral and on and on. Now that great story telling.

If I were Kyle Chandler and they asked me back as a halogram I would refuse the role. Even as a real person. Surely he must see that they did his character dirty.

Ojeet78 - 10/5/2026, 9:23 AM
They are not wrong. Bringing Hal back would degrade the emotional impact of his death and legacy. As for Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan , maybe they could have an animated movie or show voiced by Kyle focusing on Hal's years as a young Green Lantern. The more i think about it, I do think they messed up Hal's death though. Sheriff Kerry not facing any consequences for what she did doesnt sit right with me. Knowing that Hal would never stop, maybe they could have had added some friction between the Sheriff and Hal or even Noah and Hal but Hal even saying that he would protect Noah and for this to happen didnt make much sense to me. I think at the most , they could have shown moments where Kerry did lose her composure cause it felt a bit out of character for her.

@Ojeet78 - What Legacy? Three people attended his funeral, he was the most hated man in town, the world despised him and turned their backs on him, his bosses couldn't stand or trust him. That legacy? They really didn't show him redeeming himself at all. As for the emotional impact was pure shock and rage. I didn't feel like this ending gave us any real emotional impact. Its clear why the show runners called this show Lantern, and not Green Lanterns, because they are anti establishment, and made the Green Lanterns the bad guys. The guardians are untrustworthy psychos, Hal and Guy are shown as racist buttholes and the manhunters are shown as poor lovable skamps. As for all that "programming" nonsense they kept spouting out these people know nothing of computers its a hard coded rule set, they are robots ot people they already broke their programing by trying to kill all flesh. So yeah Im mad at this show. I really tried to like it and I LOVE the acting in it. but its like the character and lore were shoe horned into this series just to make it fit but it was a bad fit. They felt like they had to tear down everything to build up there own story which is lazy writing. Thats what happened to Hal in the 90's. Green Lantern got a new creative team in the 90's but didn't want anything to do with the character so they decided to kill them all off and make their own hero. Now I have grown to love Kyle but he is no Hal Jordan. Sadly they didn't give themselves any time to make this new story direction work, the previews went out for a completly different story that was already written and created, but the new team created a new book last minute and in it Hal kills the entire Green Lantern corp with the exception of a few survivors, and he kills the guardians except one, and he kills Sinestro his greatest enemy all in one issue. Heck the entire Sinestro fight I think was just two pages if that. It wasn't even and extra large edition of the comic. Thats lazy writing people have been trying to make sense of that Paralax crap ever since but its an awful concept. This series is even worse because they are telling an entire generation of people who will only know this version of "Lantern" that the Green Lanterns are all a bunch of facists and racists. They didn't just kill Hal they killed the whole lore and world of Green Lantern. I will say I loved the acting and casting but Noah needed to have died, and Kerry needed to be put in prison. Also if they are not afraid to mess with the cannon this much why didn't they just allow multiple Green Lanterns on the planet at a time it could have set up some really fun stories. This show was so upsetting, I have been a Green Lantern fan since as long as I can remember and they did him dirty to be politically correct and subversive.

@Flashguy7179 - The Guardians have been pricks in the comics too and Hal Jordan has always gone against them. He has always been anti-establishment. I dont think anyone thinks Hal is racist, if anything he was written as this really complex individual who fought through generational trauma, overcame that fear to be the hero that he is. His legacy within the confines of the show is a self assured John Stewart. Most people are fans of the Geoff Johns run but this Hal is clearly based on the Denny O Neil and Neal Adams run and thats okay. I personally loved the grounded approach cause it made them more accessible to people who have never even picked up a comic. I have never seen Hal be more loved and talked about before this show.

But people were telling me to give the season a chance. Let them tell the story I was told. See where you are at after episode 8 they said. Well, turns out I was right the whole freaking time.
