LANTERNS: Possible Leaked Promo Standee Reveals First Look At Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner

What appears to be an in-universe advertisement for the upcoming HBO Max Lanterns series features Nathan Fillion as the returning Guy Gardner...

Coming off rumors that Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner was set to make an appearance in the upcoming Lanterns series following his debut in James Gunn's Superman, we got confirmation back in March that the Firefly alum will indeed be a part of the HBO series.

Now, we may have our first look at Fillion's returning Green Lantern via a leaked promo standee.

We're not certain that this is actually from Lanterns, but the in-universe advertisement for an Electro-Punch energy drink was not part of Superman's marketing campaign. It could simply be something that wasn't used for the movie, but if it is Lanterns-related, it doesn't look like Guy has made many (any) changes to his divisive costume.

Fillion spoke about his take on the notoriously aggravating GL during a recent interview with TV Line.

"He's a jerk!," said the actor when asked what separates Guy from his fellow ring-slinging heroes. "What's important to know is, you don't have to be good to be a Green Lantern; you just have to be fearless. So Guy Gardner is fearless, and he is not very good. He's not nice, which is very freeing as an actor because you just think to yourself, what is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment? And that's the answer. That's what you do in that moment. I think if he has a superpower, it might be his overconfidence, in that he thinks he could take on Superman. He can't!"

Showrunner and executive producer Chris Mundy (via the WBD press site) recently assured fans that Lanterns won't "sacrifice the magic of the source material."

“From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama – rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building – that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion. The goal is to create something that feels timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material.”

James Hawes (Slow HorsesPenny DreadfulThe Mist, The AlienistSnowpiercer) will helm the first two episodes. The creative team also includes Emmy Award-winning Lost and Watchmen creator Damon Lindelof, and comic book writer Tom King. Justin Britt-Gibson, Breannah Gibson and Vanessa Baden Kelly are also on board.

Lanterns "follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.".

"This is a story of a couple of Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan," Gunn said of the project when it was first announced. "We have a few other Lanterns peppered in there but this is really a terrestrial based TV show which is almost like True Detective with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over Precinct Earth in it they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our largest story of the DCU."

I still believe Allan Ritchson should have been Guy (his work on the 3-season BMS, now on Netflix.... he's freaking hilarious) and Fillion should have been Booster Gold (his work as Captain Hammer during the writer's strike on Dr. Horrible: The Amazing Sing-Along-Blog .... possibly still on YouTube)

But, whatever. Ritchson would be great as Booster too. Because of Reacher we know he has range. Just get the dude in the DCU!

In a way it seems like Gunn has found his way into the character. How to write him and other characters, that makes sense to him. A way to say “oh I know who this guys is”, but it kind of takes away the heroism of them. I did not read any of Guy Gardner’s run of Green Lantern but he just seems like a low budget, vein, super powered character. That seems strange that he would even have that ring if he was such a piece of shit.

Also thanks @knightrider for replying. I had to repost my comment because it repeated itself. So Guy Gardner is a jerk but at the end of the day he does the right thing. That makes sense. He does come off that way in the Gunn movies.

@LibraMatter - yeah

Guy can be a blowhard and a jerk but underneath that , he is a good guy that will do the right thing at the end of the day which he does in the film and of course the comics many times hence him being a GL

Also the GL ring doesn’t choose anyone due to goodness but strength of will which both good or bad people can have.

Honestly , it just seems like an unused prop from Superman to me rather then something from Lanterns since it just seems too cheeky for the presumed tone of that show but could be wrong…

I am curious to see how Guy fits into Lanterns tonally especially in regards to his look & haircut which could just seem out of place in the more apparently “serious” narrative of that show but we’ll see.

Anyway , i enjoyed Fillion’s Guy in Superman so looking forward to seeing him more in the DCU!!.

Netflix is looking like the odds-on favorite to take the studio without the other pieces.

@HulkisHoly -
I like Snyder. And I also like comic book movies.

So, there goes your theory.

But I'm also the wierdo that loves Andor, which is considered by many to be some of the best live action Star Wars ever made after the original trilogy (and even possibly better than 2/3rd's of it),.....and which also just happened to have been made by Tony Gillroy,..... a person who famously has said he was never a fan of Star Wars prior to creating this story world.

It's funny how your theory keeps collapsing when you apply it to different real world situations.

@IAmAHoot -

The only ones crying are people who can’t let go of the past: whether it’s Nolan fanboys or Snyder fanboys.

My point is that everyone here is so negative and it seems to be mostly from Snyder fans.

Superman 2025 may not be an Oscar winner but it’s without a doubt the most comic booky Superman or super hero film we’ve gotten in a long time and for that I’m grateful.

I’ve said I didn’t like peacemaker s1 or 2 that much. I’m hoping he doesn’t show up in MOT, and I really despise Gunn’s old films like Slither and Super. So, I’m not a Gunn fanboy.

I just don’t want everything so miserable here in the comments.

@spr0cks - What does Andor have to do with BvS? the only commonality being they both weren't fans of the IP they were working on......but there is quite the stark difference between the two right? I mean Andor was special. It was fantastic. BvS was BvS lol
