DEADLY CLASS And HAPPY! Cancelled By The Syfy Network; Both Will Be Shopped Around To Other Outlets

In a surprising bit of news, the Syfy network has chosen not to renew Deadly Class and Happy!, two small screen adaptations of popular comic books, for another season.

Despite garnering fairly strong ratings during its first season, the numbers for Happy! reportedly experienced a significant drop during its second season. However, it has also been reported that the show is one of Netflix's top performing second window series. As a result, the production company UCP is working to make Netflix its new home, while still shopping the show around to other outlets.

Compared to Happy!'s sophomore outing, the first season of the Russo brothers-produced Deadly Class reportedly had stronger ratings, but they weren't strong enough for Syfy to invest in another season of a show they don't fully own. That said, Sony Pictures TV is also hoping to find Deadly Class a new home.

Happy!, which mixed live-action and animation, is based on the comic by Grant Morrison and follows Nick Sax (Christopher Meloni) and an imaginary blue winged horse named Happy (Patton Oswalt).  Meanwhile, Deadly Class adapts the comic series from Rick Remender and focuses on the character Marcus (Benjamin Wadsworth), who is recruited into a school for assassins.

After Avengers Endgame, everything is just coming to an end. I wonder if this is the falling point for the superhero genre. A bunch of tv shows are getting canned: Legion, Tick, Deadly class, etc.

Maybe people are getting tired of superhero tv with their limited budgets. Maybe it will survive on the big screen a lil longer.

I kinda liked Deadly Class, but it honestly could have been a better show. Shame it ended on such a weird cliffhanger.

@tmp3 - I actually loved Deadly Class, but it's not for everyone. What is though?

Didn't find Deadly Class to be as good as I hoped, buy I still quite enjoyed it. Hopefully someone picks it up.

I enjoyed season 1 of Happy! but I haven't been back for the follow-up.
Deadly Class felt too try hard. I never finished it.

@Battabing - did you read the comic?

Nope.

@Battabing - didn’t think so.

@Battabing - I feel like if you grew up around any major city during that era you wouldn’t think it was try hard... reading the comic would have also helped...

(You do know the show is set in the mid 80’s... right?)

@CapnMurphy2021 - I watched a few episodes, so yeah, I know it was set in the 80's. It just got a bit too silly and soap opera dramatic. I'm clearly not the only who felt this way about the show, since everybody stopped watching it, and it got canceled.

@Battabing - again with the smug, unfounded, and sweeping statements that you pull out of your bum? The show did get canceled, but that’s about where the truth of your statement ends.
The article even says that it had “stronger ratings” than Happy... and clearly not “everybody” stopped watching it considering there are people here, including my wife and I, that finished the first season and enjoyed it.

It’s cool to have an opinion on something (even when it is lacking information and substance) but you come off as pretty arrogant when you make such sweeping statements and try to speak for “everybody.”

👌🏻

@CapnMurphy2021 -
Ratings must not have been that much stronger than Happy!
Facts are facts: shows we like go away when when viewership drops. It's the business. Nobody is trying to hurt your feelings.

@Battabing - ok?
Did you read the article?
Why would my feelings be hurt?
And I know things get canceled... it’s fine... at least we get what we get.
Carnivàl, Swamp Thing, deadly class(lol?), etc...

I liked Happy, not too many shows make go WTF?!? It's funny, when I'm watching it, the wife will catch a line... "What the hell are you watching?" I just smile, and say "It's Happy".

I absolutely loved "Deadly Class" and was looking forward to a second season! Found it to basically be "The Breakfast Club" meets "Battle Royale" with a great cast and a killer 80s soundtrack (lots of Goth and Punk which was my formative music... yes, I'm what the kids now call, "old".) - but the point is, what wasn't to love?

I really hope it gets picked up somewhere!

"Happy" I've been meaning to watch for a while and is on my list but just haven't gotten around to yet so can't really comment on.

@FoxForce5 - in the same boat! Growing up near LA during the time this show/comic takes place... so many mods/punks/goths around where I lived... love love love the music ... and yeah... I guess I’m old?
But I loved the show... Me and the wife are definitely gonna miss it if it doesn’t get picked up...

Kind of pisses me off on both accounts. Happy! deserves a streaming service where it can really let loose.
