FIREFLY 15th Anniversary Video Includes Brand New Footage Of Serenity From The Show's Original VFX Team

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the science-fiction show Firefly original VFX house Zoic Studios released a tribute video containing the first brand new footage of Serenity in flight in over a decade.

It's hard to believe that it's been 15 years since we were introduced the verse that was Joss Whedon's Firefly and though the show only ran for a total of 14 episodes, it managed to connect so strongly with audiences that it became a cult phenomenon - even leading to a 2005 feature film follow up, Serenity .

Desires for a revival of the show have persisted every day since, with both Whedon and FOX going back and forth on whether they would consider a new version of the sci-fi western. If any fan is still looking to scratch-the-itch for new Firefly no matter how small though, then look no further. 

Zoic Studios, the VFX company responsible for the show's Emmy winning effects, have put together a tribute video celebrating the long-canceled show which contains the first new footage of Serenity and the world Whedon created since 2005, and what will more than likely prove to be the only new material we see. 

So put your dinosaur toys away, get out of your bunk and soar like a leaf on the wind as you reminisce about some big damn heroes.
 

 

In honor of the 15th anniversary of Joss Whedon’s cult sci-fi favorite “Firefly,” we've launched a reel that celebrates the epic journey of Serenity and its valiant crew. The compilation highlights some of the best VFX work on the beloved show, which launched Zoic in 2002 and earned an Emmy Award for “Outstanding Visual Effects for a Series.” We dug into the archives to create this commemorative reel, rebuilding Serenity with the original team and put together a shiny new sequence followed by an assembly of some of the most beloved and quotable moments of the franchise.

I usually hate stuff set in space. But Firefly is my favourite show of all time. It’s just incredible. I’ve never seen anything with as much heart as the show had, nor anything that was as consistently funny (except a select few comedy series). The movie didn’t have the warmth or beautiful cinematography of the show, but the story was fantastic, and a great ending. A lot of meaning for a scifi film (sentimental meaning, not intellectual). “I’m gonna show you a world without sin”.

This opening shot should have been the introduction of serenity in the film. Includes the western feel that was missing from the film.

I’d kill for a revival. I think it ought to be a limited run though, with a set story. Like 12 episodes or something. There was a short story included in the official book about Mal as an old man living alone on a planet, after everyone has gone their seperate ways. I think that could work. Kinda like Old Man Logan. Or Unforgiven. But have the plot be Mal getting the band back together for one last job or something.

@connorblaze - When you think about it, isn't Firefly kind of like Logan already.
You have the hardened veteran who lost the battle, and isn't trying to be any kind of hero and tried to keep a low profile. Logan/Mal
You have the young girl, who is being hunted by people who see her as nothing but a weapon.But the veteran reluctantly takes her in and managed to find some kind of hope because of her.

The show was nice. Some scenes were definitely waaaay out of place but still.

It’s amazing that nobody had really done a western/space hybrid successfully before, and that people found it jarring. I mean it seems a logical thing. The final frontier as a literal wild west frontier. Complete with civil war.

@connorblaze - Well there are others, like Star Wars, and I don't watch anime, but two shows that are always being compared to Firefly are Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star

I love the show. Unfortunately I discovered it as reruns on the SyFy channel. I watched all 14 episodes and I thought "That's it? that can't be it? I need more!" But it was to late the war was over, the brown coats lost.

Firefly had some seriously great stuff in its 13 episodes, and it does make you mourn for the show we might have had if it had been allowed to continue as most shows like this hit their strides in the second and third seasons once everyone is settled in and enough continuity has been built up to add layers of richness to the storylines.

Fox however had zero patience for the show, airing it out of order and being quick to kill it. The fact that it is not only still remembered 15 years later but still has a fan base and regularly sells merchandise is pretty astounding and a testament to how much potential there was in it.

Sadly, 15 years is a lot of time, and I’m unconvinced that a revival would be a good idea at this point. I would be down for a film sequel, however (one would think Netflix or Hulu or someone would be more than willing to fund one... it would get far more press than their average original film), although after 15 years they’d have to radically have shifted the story along, so it would be a very different thing.

@Chewtoy - this is what kills me. The thought that we didn't even see the best version of this show. Cus you're rift, most shows (especially the ones Joss did) don't really get going to season 2 or 3.

@ThouBear8 - It's such a shame we didn't get more. It felt like that universe came to us fully formed, and there were so many seeds being planted not only with the Blue Sun conglomerate but things like Inara having a terminal illness.

Even those episodes planned for the rest of the season sound great like the one that would have seen a travelling troupe of Shakespearean actors guest starring Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof and James Marsters.

So much potential in that show.

I love this show so much. I've watched it 5 times all the way through, & it gets better every single time I watch it. In this day of revivals, I'll never give up hope that they'll bring it back somehow. Whether it's another season (unlikely but still possible, given all the other shows that have been brought back), a sequel, or even an animated series.

When I look at something like guardians of the galaxy, & the success it has found, it's hard not to think about firefly, & how popular it could have been (& still could be). Given the way every cast & crew member talks about the show, & how much they loved being a part of it, I can't imagine any of them would be unwilling to come back.

So interesting to think what might have been. I’d give every superhero film there is for another season of Firefly, and I might’ve had to. Think about it, if Joss remained on firefly, he might never have been asked to do Avengers, which may have led to a poor Avengers film, and superheroes might never have taken offas massively as they did.
