HBO President Says First GAME OF THRONES Spin-Off Won't Premiere Until At Least 2020

With HBO's hit fantasy show Game of Thrones coming to an end next year, fans are looking ahead to the prequel series the network is planning. However, the first spin-off won't be coming out anytime soon...

Fans of the epic adult fantasy series Game of Thrones have a long wait ahead of them before they're able to return to Westeros in 2019, and it looks like HBO isn't going to rush the spin-off series they have planned either. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, HBO's programming president Casey Bloys was asked about how the network's plans for expanding the GoT universe are progressing and gave an update on when we can expect to see the first prequel series. Bloys says:

"There are five of them. If we do a pilot and series, nothing is going to air on HBO until at least a year after the final season. We're not doing a final season and then, 'Following it at 11 p.m. … .' I've seen some exciting material. We have really great writers working on these; it's very exciting. But there's no timetable. Not everybody is on the same schedule, so I've seen different versions of different things that are potentially exciting. But there's no timetable about when a decision would be made about any of them."

Even though the gap between the seventh and eighth seasons of Game of Thrones is going to be longer than ever, the network isn't planning on taking away any attention from the final episodes of their hit show by quickly following it up with a spin-off. This is similar to how AMC handled the transition from Breaking Bad to the prequel spin-off Better Call Saul, as there was a 16-month gap between the two shows.

While there are five Game of Thrones spin-off series in development, Bloys mentioned that he's not sure how many of them will actually make the cut.

"I'll do anywhere from zero to five! (Laughs.) Though probably more likely one. But we'll see."

And the spin-off is called, “The Sword of the Morning”?

Not surprise since they will get viewers in 2019 with GOT final season anyway. Also for the spin-off, I hoping either Robert's rebellion or Aegon's conquest.

@Odin - for myself I think Roberts Rebellion would functioning as an excellent spinoff on Mutiple levels. As it functions as a spinoff, while keeping many of the same characters (making it an excellent trasiton for a furture all new spinoff). Plus, I think they could easily get some actors to return; not just the "younger versions" of like nNed from Brans flashback, but I think they could the Tywin actor back with some deaging makeup.

Their excuse as to why they don't want to do it. Is that we already know what happens, so there I nothing exciting about it. But I personally do buy that. While we already know what happens in broad strokes the fun is seeing it play out, seeing the charcaters interacte and scheme. I also think it will add extra weight to Game Of Thrones. We will actually have true emotional reactions when the mentions character like Rhagar or Obyrens sister.

@StormXmen123 - I actually would like to see a set of fresh faces, if they do a Robert's rebellion. Like for younger Tywin, I think Jason Isaacs would be absolutely perfect. Peter Capaldi or Willem Defoe could give us awesome mad king. Jared Padalecki and Charlie Cox are also good options for Rhaegar Targaryen.

@Odin - I think you could get away with new actors in the roles of young Ned and the mad King (while you are sacrificing some continuity with Brans visions, the actors haven't defined the roles).

However, with more prominent charcaters (such as Tywin) if you can get the same actors back I think it would really benefit the show. I think Jason Issacs is great, but the orginal Tywin (Charles dance?) has defined the role, and I feel he was old enough in GOT to believably play his 20 years younger self (with a wig an makeup); similar to how you had to get Ian Mckellen back as Gandalf for the Hobbit. On the other hand, you couldn't relasticlaly have Lenna Heidi returning to play a younger Cersie.

On a side note, While I agree Capaldi could play the mad King, I do feel he is an excellent choice to play Tywin.

All in all, I'm sure however they tackle the series, it will be a great descision.

"What kind of Game of Thrones spin-off do you want to see?"

Whether set in the "past, present or future", or all three (!) would like to see those new five story arcs each with 6 episodes - yep, 30 episode season!

:)

I would love to see an anthology series where each 10 episode season is a different story/important event in the history of Westeros.

01 - The Dawn Age: Children of the Forest and the coming of the First Men.
02 - The Age of Heroes: Brandon the Builder builds the Wall
03 - The Andal Invasion: The fall of the Children of the Forest
04 - Valyria: The fall of Valyria as only a lesser house, the Targaryens, escape
05 - Aegon's Conquest: Aegon and his two sisters conquer Westeros
06 - The Dance of Dragons: Targaryen Civil War
07 - Blackfyre: Daemon Blackfyre claims the throne
08 - Dunk and Egg: The Trial by Seven of Duncan the Tall
09 - Aegon the Unlikely: Egg rules as Aegon V
10 - The War of the Ninepenny Kings: The Fifth Blackfyre Rebellion
11 - Robert's Rebellion: The Mad King's reign comes to an end

@Thanson - Oh my me, that would be so awesome. Though some of them might better of as a two part-episodes. Seasons episode count could be higher from GOT.

@Thanson - There was a 45 minute animated film that was just released with Season 7 that pretty much covers all of this in a story-book way. Sure, it’s not 11 hours of pure glory, but it’s something!

@TheCantilope - Yup, I saw that. It actually added fuel to my fire about really wanting to see a bunch of those stories hitting HBO for years to come.

I would love to see a mini series of the adventures of Dunk and Egg. Just finished all three books and and was really impressed even though it’s a much smaller story.

@MrCamw1 - I've read many of them. I haven't read the last three, I think, and a couple from the Card Sharks era. I also haven't read the "the gang's all here" super team-up in #9 (?)
I had Martin sign the book of the month club edition of the first book, and the iBooks "Deuce" book.

Robert's Rebllion! It would be really fun to see the younger versions of all of these characters plus ones like Rhaegar and Arthur Dayne who we have only really heard about.

FIVE spin-off series? Give it a break. Sometimes LESS is MORE. Look no further than The Hobbit ....

I love GoT as much as many other fans but lets not ruin the universe.

@TheOtherOn - Have you read any of the stuff focused on Westeros prior to the series? Some of that stuff (The Dance of Dragons, Aegon's Conquest, ect) could be every bit as entertaining as the current series/story?
