GAME OF THRONES Showrunners Confirm Final Season Episode Count; Maisie Williams Jokes About Major Death

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss spoke at SXSW, confirming the final season episode count. Plus, Maisie Williams jokes (at least, we hope so) about a major character death...

We had already heard that the final season of HBO's Game of Thrones would likely be the shortest one yet, and sure enough, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss confirmed that season 8 would only run for 6 episodes while appearing at the SXSW festival earlier today.

The duo, who were joined by stars Maisie Williams (Arya) and Sophie Turner (Sansa), also announced some of the writers for the final batch of eps and revealed that musician Ed Sheeran will be making a cameo. Apparently, he was brought in as a surprise for Williams who is a big fan.

At one point, an attendee asked Turner why she still had blonde hair (as opposed to her character's red locks), at which point Williams chimed in, "she's dead." The panel reportedly fell awkwardly silent at this, but Benioff then seemed to confirm that the young actress was joking.

It was recently announced that season 7 of Game of Thrones will premiere on July 16th. You can check out the first teaser right HERE.

@REMIMARKS - As long as there aren't any fillers, than the shorter the better. [frick]ing hate fillers that go nowhere. Especially walking dead season 2 or 3, they spent 1 whole season finding a little girl and at the end of the season she was in a [frick]ing barn and already dead (the most obvious place and answer was correct)

That's TWD, though. GOT has better writing, and I never felt it ever had filler episodes.

Im sure some of the epsiodes (especially the finale) will run longer than the standard hour.

But I can understand cutting the episodes for the cgi (with armies of the dead and dragons). Im sure it will be film quality cgi by then. The jump of cgi from Dany riding the dragon out of the pit in season 5 (which is abit rough with the greenscreen) to her riding them in season 6 when she detroys the boat was a huge step up in quality.

Sooooo short, but I'm sure the cost of the episodes are going to be huge for season 7 and 8.

@Doomsday8888 - dude, at this point I hope they kill everyone...after that teasing of John Snow for a year, I spent so much time hoping he wasn't dead I was pissed off when he wasn't...they play too much on how much anyone cares...I mean I did care, but they literally pushed me so far I quit caring...now if they don't die I'll be pissed, and I literally don't give a damn who wins, let it be the night walkers, or whatever...it's just a show now...they pushed too far, now I could care less...ruined the show for me

If each episode is great, no one will care about the shorter season.

@JohnnyTBP - season 5 was epic, it's been downhill ever since...they obviously bent to pressure...kill everyone except Jon? I didn't want him to die, but jeez man, following the roller coaster has been exhausting...I'm over it I hate to say

It's better this way than having unnecessary story added just to get more money.
