HOUSE OF THE DRAGON: Corlys Velaryon Actor Steve Toussaint Calls Out Racist Backlash To His Casting

"A rich Black guy? That's beyond the pale." Judge Dredd actor Steve Toussaint, who plays Lord Corlys Velaryon in HBO's House of the Dragon, has called out "fans" who took issue with his casting.

Although the show did add more diverse characters as it progressed, Game of Thrones was often criticized for its lack of representation. Prequel series House of the Dragon enlisted Steve Toussaint (Prince of Persia, Judge Dredd) to play Lord Corlys Velaryon, aka the Sea Snake, but, of course, his casting was met with backlash from a very different contingent of "fans."

During an interview with Men's Health (via SFFGazette), Toussaint responded to the online negativity surrounding his casting.

“It seems to be very hard for people to swallow,” noted the actor. “They are happy with a dragon flying. They’re happy with white hair and violet-colored eyes, but a rich Black guy? That’s beyond the pale.”

Though never explicitly stated, Velaryon is assumed to be white in the Fire and Blood novel (most of George R.R. Martin's principal characters are), but Toussaint's point is perfectly valid. Even though the mythology behind Westeros is supposed to mirror our own history to some extent, this is a fantasy tale, so "historical accuracy" doesn't really enter into it.

Fortunately, the majority of fans have embraced Toussaint's casting as the Sea Snake.

“What has been wonderful is for every toxic person that has somehow found their way into my timeline, there have been so many others who have been so supportive and been like, ‘Oh my god, I can’t wait, this is going to be great!'” he added. “Even when we were doing certain scenes, there would be supporting artists who would come up and go, ‘It’s great to have this representation.'”

Lord Velaryon is more of a background character in the show at first, but expect him to make his presence felt soon enough!

The first episode of House of the Dragon is now streaming, and was HBO's most-watched series premiere of all time with close to 10 million viewers.

"The prequel series finds the Targaryen dynasty at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires—real and imagined—crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm."

House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders) as King Viserys Targaryen, Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One) as Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy (Wanderlust) as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Prince Daemon Targaryen. The show is set to premiere on August 21.

@GhostDog - This guy pulls focus every time he's on screen; his look, his bearing, those magnificent dreads! I can't take my eyes off of him.

@UniqNo - There were a few supporting characters in later seasons, but they were mostly slaves or handmaidens. Missandie and Grey Worm were probably the biggest.

@RorMachine - ah you're right. I didn't think hard enough. Those were two great characters in Dany's camp when she was more of a liberator before turning mad in the last couple eps.

@RorMachine - I mean... it is supposed to look like medieval England soooo... George RR Martin has said that in the past. I get that it's a fictional world and all, but changing race for representation just... I dont know. Sounds pandering and more racist.

Like this is Hollywood thinking that what they're doing is helping African American communities. No. It helps whatever black actor you cast, who was probably pretty well off to begin with.

But people line up for this hill to die on like THAT's how you fix issues that African American's are facing. You have the great white savior movie executives cast a rich black actor for a role to keep them rich... yep. really helping the cause.

I quite like his look and am cool with having more representation in that world.Am I remembering right that there were next to no black people in the original series?

Either way I hear G RR Martin is more involved this time around so let's see what they do with it.

I’ll complain about recasting certain characters but really who the hell cares who’s cast here? This shouldn’t even be a thing as he said just as many were supportive. Cant erase racism and all racists. There will always be some small part of Society in that camp .humans are inherently not good, unfortunately.

Some of these people today act like we’re still in the era of segregation and Jim Crow.
This is 2022. There have been “rich black guys” for numerous decades.
Nobody cares if a “black guy” is rich or a black woman.

What people are tired of is a forced agenda where Hollywood uses the skin color or gender of actors as armor against criticism.

And I tire of the contributors on this site constantly going out of the way to play the race and gender cards with articles all to stir up unnecessary anger or discontent.

Of for the love of God. Stop calling fans racist for wanting the character to be true to the source material.

https://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Corlys_Velaryon

You want to argue that this actor is genuinely the best for the role you could find? Fine. But don't act like it's racist for wanting it to follow the basics of the lore. This is like calling people who didn't like the leather jumpsuits of the x men movies leather fetish bigots.
