HBO has released the first official images from Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the series, which is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen. The project recently began production and will debut on HBO (and be available to stream on HBO Max) in 2022.

In these images, we see Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower and Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, "The Sea Snake," and Emma D'Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen.

We also have some character descriptions for each of the new additions to Westeros we see here:

Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower: The daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms. She was raised in the Red Keep, close to the king and his innermost circle; she possesses both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen.

Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower: The Hand of the King, Ser Otto loyally and faithfully serves both his king and his realm. As the Hand sees it, the greatest threat to the realm is the king's brother, Daemon, and his position as heir to the throne.

Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, "The Sea Snake": Lord of House Velaryon, a Valyrian bloodline as old as House Targaryen.  As “The Sea Snake,” the most famed nautical adventurer in the history of Westeros, Lord Corlys built his house into a powerful seat that is even richer than the Lannisters and that claims the largest navy in the world.

Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen: The king’s first-born child, she is of pure Valyrian blood, and she is a dragonrider.  Many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everything...but she was not born a man.

Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen: The younger brother to King Viserys and heir to the throne.  A peerless warrior and a dragonrider, Daemon possesses the true blood of the dragon.  But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air…

I wish they’d made the costumes a little bit different to the main series being 300 years ago and all but other than tht the casting looks 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

I’ve been having trouble getting excited for this after the massive waste the last season of GoT ended being...But seeing these pictures moved the needle a little for me...Cautiously optimistic at this point...

@vegetaray - I decided to rewatch GOT this month. After getting through initial feelings of disappointment watching the first two episodes (knowing the mostly disappointing ends that await most of the characters), I actually surprisingly still enjoyed watching seasons 1-4.

But as season 5 began, it started to feel like being in a car uncontrollably skidding into a wreck.

Still, I enjoyed rewatching the early seasons enough to think there is a chance I would still enjoy a spinoff (at least enough to give it a chance).

@vegetaray - far more hyped for the Second Age Middle Earth show from Amazon. 465 million for one season of television? Makes Game of Thrones seem like child’s play

@McMurdo - Now that series I’m absolutely excited to see...

@Rosraf - I’ve actually started a re-watch twice now but can’t even get past the first season...Just the thought of what everything would devolve into by the end is too much...

@vegetaray - Ha. I was only going to watch the first season, but by the end of S1 I realized I enjoyed it enough (and had forgotten enough of it) to keep watching. But yeah around the time of the Battle of Castle Black, it stopped being surprisingly enjoyable.

It's because this show has a crazy cast and isn't directly tied to Game of Thrones' ending, otherwise I would've skipped this.

@bkmeijer - GOT was only good when there were story and dialogue available to adapt. This is not the case here.

@McMurdo - atleast a different team is working on it. I'm not that familiar with the writers, but atleast the showrunner is someone I trust. Directed some of the best GoT episodes

It all ends with the last season of GOT . Knowing that makes me joyless, devoid of any excitement for this.

@Supercat6376 - This is how I feel about Star Wars. All the sacrifice leading up to blowing up the Deathstar and defeating Palpatine only for a second version Empire to pop up and Palpatine to be alive...sad af

@ZacktheSavior - well Disney Wars isn’t George Canon, it’s like a Marvel What If story. Not actually true canon. George Lucas said this much to a 7th grader in a video with his wife that got deleted off the internet by Disney afterwards. Palpatine died at the end of Return of the Jedi and Luke started a new Jedi Order. And there is no “Kylo Ren”. Not in real canon.

@ZacktheSavior - don’t get me started on those movies. If it wasn’t for the mandalorian Star Wars would be dead to Me. With as good as it is the thought of how badly they ruined the movies still rattles around my brain as I’m watching it. Like this still ends with the crap that was TROS.

Making the Velaryon's black and that being the only difference in look to the Targeryan's is an interesting choice. I hope we get to see Corly's son, and Rhaenyra's husband, soon.

Sorry, but I can't buy that Olivia is "the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms".

@4thMaster - This photo isn't very flattering of her. She's very attractive, IMO. But it is worth noting that according to the source the legendary beauty of her youth "didn't age well."

But I too am heavily anticipating Laenor's reveal. I really hope they do right by him, after how badly they screwed over the three gay characters from the main series. (JonCon never even got a mention and, judging by how they treated Renly and Loras, that was probably for the best.)

4thMaster - 5/5/2021, 4:51 PM
@SerKurtWagner - I think you’re referring to Emma D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra? Beauty is subjective of course and they can easily sell that’s she’s a stunner, but you can’t hide that Cooke is a damn beautiful woman playing a character that’s supposed to be so mediocre looking, it’s in the character description.

Thanks, I was blanking on his name. I’m a bit worried on how they’ll portray him, and how characters will act towards him, but I hope they can pull it off gracefully.

It's so good to feel hype for this mythos again. House Hightower and House Velaryon are two of my favorite families from AWOIAF, and they got nothing out of GOT, so I am very excited to finally see them on the screen.

@SerKurtWagner - It’s weird that more wasn’t made of the Velaryon’s in the main series, given they have Targeryan blood in them or that Dany didn’t search them out, they’re her familial cousins after all. I’m pretty sure they’re still alive by the time A Game of Thrones happens.

@4thMaster - Yeah, sorry, I got the actresses names confused for a second, but now I'm confused - so do you think Cooke is too beautiful or not beautiful enough to be Alicent?

Still not feeling much hype due to being let down by the 8th season of GoT, but Matt Smith being in this is interesting. Love him in doctor Who

Hey HBO, in case you didn't already know:

The ship has sailed on Game of Thrones... You have the last 2 seasons to thank for that.

It all ended in a whimper and with too much of the showrunners trying to defy audience's expectations. Know who else tried that?? Disney and Rian Johnson. Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker serve as great examples of how this will be received by people nowadays. Too little, too late (imo)
