HBO Max has announced that House of the Dragon will debut on the streaming service on Sunday, August 21. That's just a couple of weeks before The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power hits Amazon on September 2, so the end of the summer looks set to be an exciting time for fantasy fans.

Based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, the series, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen. In the show, we'll learn how the powerful family fell into a bitter and brutal civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, presaging the beginning of the end of the ruling dynasty of Westeros. For GOT fans, exploring this on screen is an exciting prospect.

House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel, and Rhys Ifans.

Other cast members include Milly Alcock, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Emily Carey, Harry Collett, Ryan Corr, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan, Graham McTavish, Ewan Mitchell, Theo Nate, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson, Phia Saban, Gavin Spokes, and Savannah Steyn.

As well as dropping a poster hyping up House of the Dragon's premiere date, HBO Max has also shared some new stills from the series highlighting the show's lead characters.

I really want to care about this show… but it bring a prequel makes it feel pointless bc I know it leads to a disappointing place.

@Ha1frican - I mean, we already knew the dynasty came to a bad end...

Can't wait ! Love dragons. That is my main reason for the show. I can care less about the human drama.

Isn't that a month or so before Rings of Power? That's a bold move. I'll probably pay more attention to Rings of Power, since Game of Thrones is still too fresh in my memory

@bkmeijer1 -
Amazon’s Wheel of Time is what’s too fresh in my memory (and a lot of that team is working on Rings of Power)

I’m way more worried about Rings of Power with near completely inexperienced showrunners, the fact they are marketing it as a prequel when it is a reboot, the fact they don’t have all the rights to the second age, the numerous changes they’ve already announced to the story and characters, and most importantly the way Amazon already butchered Wheel of Time.

First trailer didn’t do much for my confidence but I tried to stay optimistic. Yet the more coming out about this show, the more I’m dreading it. Still keeping my fingers crossed.

@MrDandy - I thought they did have the rights to the second age stuff, but not to the first age stuff.

And I'll be watching Wheel of Time soon, so might be I may also come back on what I said now. We'll see

@bkmeijer1 - I thought so too. But they don’t. They have the Tv rights to only Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. They don’t have the rights to any other material about the second age (most noteworthy Silmarillion and A History of Middle Earth). Meaning they are trying to cobble it together from the appendices of LotR and have massive gaps in what they can adapt. It’s head scratching confusing why they would adapt an era they didn’t buy….

@MrDandy - and here I was thinking they were gonna adapt the 'Akallabeth' and the aptly named 'Of the Rings of Power' sections from the Silmarillion.

I knew it was also gonna rely heavily on hearsay from the other books, but I admit it does kill my hype a little knowing this (but it's still more than any I have for House of the Dragon).

Pretty excited for this one! At least it is being based on finished material, even if it’s adapting non-traditional narrative. It’s got a killer cast and HBO behind it. I’m in. I need a pick-me-up after wheel of time and (probably) Rings of Power.

I'll watch it for Matt Smith, but expectations are low.

At least it won't suck as bad as that LOTR Amazon show.

I'll give it a go for Olivia Cooke.
