HBO (via SFF Gazette) has finally debuted a full trailer for its upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, and it gives us a much better idea of what to expect from the show as the seeds of civil war are planted among the most powerful family in Westeros.

The footage spotlights most of the main players, as well as one of the many (presumably) fire-breathing beasts the Targaryens will ride into battle.

Set almost 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will focus on the conflict that erupts in the Targaryen household when the king names his daughter as heir to the Iron Throne ahead of his son.

Check out the trailer below, along with a full batch of character posters. House of the Dragon is set to premiere on August 21.

"The prequel series finds the Targaryen dynasty at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires—real and imagined—crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm."

House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders) as King Viserys Targaryen, Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One) as Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy (Wanderlust) as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Prince Daemon Targaryen.

So sad. I want to be excited for this so badly but it's hard to have any interest after the way that show ended. So disappointing.

Off-topic: yes please! I actually rewatched the original a few days ago, and it's so delightfully batshit. Hopefully Raimi brought some of that over to MoM.

Ove got such a bad feeling about this. I'd be surprised if this ends up being better than Game of Thrones.

This actually looks great! Ending of Game of Thrones was awful but people quickly forget that the first 6 seasons were some of the greatest television ever produced and the last two seasons mostly failed because the showrunners were over it, wanted to go work on Star Wars, and turned down 30 episodes in favor of a rushed mess of 13.

I think they can still recapture the magic with the right people in charge and at least this is based on finished material.

It certainly looks more cinematic than that brief 450 million dollar look at Rings of Power. Also I’d watch it just for Matt Smith.

I got into GoT late and still didn’t finish the last season. I’m going to hop on this as soon as it starts though and hope that it’s great.

I'll give it a shot. I haven't read the books so I'm not sure what to expect honestly. But it already looks better than Wheel of Time.

I'll admit that the premise sounds oddly simple, but I kinda like. Exactly the kinda a game of thrones the fanchise needs after whatever the last two season of Game of Thrones were.
