Max von Sydow Joins The Cast Of GAME OF THRONES Season 6

Game Of Thrones is assembling a very talented guest cast for next year. Hot on the heels of Ian McShane's arrival, veteran actor Max von Sydow has been brought on board the popular HBO fantasy show - but as a character we've already seen before! Hit the jump to find out who!

Max von Sydow is one of Hollywood's most experienced and talented veteran actors, boasting a fantastic career that includes The Exorcist, Minority Report, Shutter Island and even the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now it appears the two-time Academy Award nominated actor has turned his attention to the small screen.

EW have revealed that von Sydow has joined the cast of HBO's incredibly popular fantasy series, Game Of Thrones. He will reportedly portray the 'Three-Eyed Raven' - the ancient mentor of Bran Stark. Fans may remember that we've already briefly seen the Three-Eyed Raven - played by Struan Rodger at the end of Season 4. However, it's clear that the show's producers have clearly recast with the view to securing a bigger name for this pivotal role.

Von Sydow's involvement is yet another huge scoop for the HBO show, and comes hot on the heels of the arrival of former Deadwood star, Ian McShane. EW believe that while neither veteran will have much screen time next year, both will be crucial to the season's narrative in their own way.

What do you think of the casting news? Are you excited to see the return of Bran Stark and the Three-Eyed Raven next season? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments below!

@Odin - Sorry man, I just beat ya to the scoop (see the URLs) :/

Honestly, coming from someone who's been on both sides, I can promise you that just beating someone and watching their article deleted feels just as crappy as missing out yourself. It's not a great feeling :/

@AlexanderLykins Yeah, he had a pretty badass appearance in one episode - Hardhome. He delivered the ultimate "come at me, bro."

Max Von Sydow is [frick]ing dope. The dude was in Conan the Barbarian for chrissakes! Living legend, all the way. Also, word on the street is Ian McShane is Aerys Targaeryen, aka the Mad King, in a flashback. That explains the secrecy - GOT announcements usually come with a character name.

Oh gods below, people bitching about "this season was better than that other season" have ZERO tolerance for STORYTELLING.

And Max van Sydow being added to the cast? Talk about a coup, lads andl asses.

Game of Thrones is the best show on the air, bar none, and I mean each and EVERY season. None better than the other. It's a coherent narrative. There will be slow times, and fast times, and slow times that feed into fast times and fast times that feed into slow times.

But it is a TAPESTRY.

And you do not look at a tapestry and say, "Hey! THIS thread is more colorful than that OTHER one!"

You step back, and you look at the whole picture.

And that is what these multi-season episodic shows give us the ability to see.

Not just two hours looking at the tapestry.

We get a few close-ups of the individual threads, and then a pan-back to see how they play into the big picture, then a focus on another thread for a while.

Come ON, guys, this AIN'T rocket surgery!!!

Where the f*ck is Howland Reed. And where are Ned Starks bones? We see em but they never get back to winterfell. The books suggest Moat Cailin. Then maybe Greywater Watch?

Love this guy. He is masterful in every performance. I;m glad they are retuning to Bran's story. I almost thought they would leave it where he is.
