The GAME OF THRONES Prequel A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS Has Its Release Date Teased By WBD CEO David Zaslav

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms is one of the most highly-anticipated spinoffs currently in development at HBO and could surpass House of the Dragon in popularity.

WBD CEO David Zaslav recently gave an update on the studio's intentions for some of its key IPs at the company's Q4 2023 Earnings Call for Investors.

Zaslav said that the planned spin-off of Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will debut in late-2025. He further stated that pre-production on the program is currently underway.

Based on George R.R. Martin's epic novellas Dunk & Egg, the spin-off was originally approved in April 2023. In addition to writing some of the episode scripts, Martin will also co-executive produce the show alongside with Ira Parker (House of the Dragon, The Last Ship).

Three novellas focusing on Dunk & Egg have been published to date- The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010). A collection of all 3 novellas was bundled together in 2015 and released under the title,  A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Martin has stated that he has more Dunk & Egg novellas to write but it's anyone guess as to when he'll actually complete another entry.

During the earnings call, Zaslav went on to state, "We have these great brands- Game of Thrones. We have these great brands that people everywhere in the world know, love and will leave a dinner to come run and see."

The news should please WBD investors as the addition of another Game of Thrones spin-off will likely bolster the company's Max subscriptions.

The official logline for the series reads, "A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends."

Filming is currently slated to begin this Spring.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms will be the second spin-off to follow after the main show's conclusion. House of the Dragon premiered in August 2022. Its second season is rumored for a similar August release, later this year.

In addition to these two series, an adult animated series, tentatively titled The Golden Empire is also in development, along with a Jon Snow-centered continuation and another prequel series that follows the story of Aegon Targaryen's rise to power in Westeros.

However, speaking earlier this year to The Wrap, HBO CEO Casey Bloys cautioned, "I think with a show like [Game of Thrones], when somebody reads that something is in development, there becomes an expectation that that is being shot, which is not the case. So right now the only two things that are greenlit are House of the Dragon, obviously, and The Hedge Knight. There are a lot of other projects in development but I don’t have anything imminent to report."

All of these spin-offs and yet HBO (more likely GRRM) REFUSES to give us Robert's Rebellion.

@TheLight - if GRRM is writing it, I doubt it's refusal why we have to wait for it. Dude has to finished ASOIAF first, and apparently another Dunk & Egg novel as well

@bkmeijer1 - "Dude has to finished ASOIAF first, and apparently another Dunk & Egg novel as well"

Dude tell that to HOTD and the upcoming Aegon the Conqueror series.

GRMM knows how many people would want to see Robert's Rebellion yet he continues to shun the fans all for his Targaryen fetish to fuel his pockets.

@TheLight - atleast HotD and the Aegon series can follow the Fire & Blood book, so that wouldn't require too much writing.

Could be there's also a Robert's Rebelliok book though, but I only know of ASOIAF, Fire & Blood and Dunk & Egg. If there's a book though, there's no excuse. The outline's already there then.

@TheLight - "GRMM knows how many people would want to see Robert's Rebellion yet he continues to shun the fans all for his Targaryen fetish to fuel his pockets." Lol, all of the books he has wrote are about Targaryens, so what's the point to cry now?

@bkmeijer1 - also for the light's defence, I doubt there will be a Robert's rebellion book even started, nor he never even intented to a one, because there are lot of things that should be "unanswered". Dumb and Dumber didn't even know shit after Jon died in the books lmfao.

@RegularPoochie - and yet they're making a Jon Snow show, so maybe a book isn't even needed first.

@bkmeijer1 - If GRRM is writing it, expect him to finish it in 16 to 18 years. Probably 16 years for first draft, and then 18 years for finished screenplay.

Will House of the Dragon finish before GRRM finishes the series?

bkmeijer1 - 2/25/2024, 2:01 PM
@EgoEgor - probably. If he's also writing another Dunk & Egg novel, I can see him write that first before finally getting to A Dream of Spring

I’ll watch. But I feel like this guy is gonna introduce a lot of glut to the app

More Dunk & Egg novellas to write? Shouldn't GRRM focus on finishing ASOIAF first?

Anyway, 2025 is no surprise. HBO is probably busy with HotD now anyway. Wonder if they're gonna do two GoT spin-offs a year though. That might get busy

We may never get that series, as Warner Bros will be sold in april.

Also GRRM won't finish another book before he dies.

He is old and massively overweight.
In his shoes i wouldn't waste my time with writing books either but focus on bringing my favorite books alive as series, better yet movies!

Imagine every book adapted as a 2.5 to 3 hour movie.
