After a week off Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns with its latest episode; titled “FZZT”, featuring "Marvel One-Shot: Item 47"'s Agent Blake (Titus Welliver). Let's take a look and see what surprises are in store for us. Warning for those of you that haven’t caught the episode yet there will be some spoilers ahead.
Review
A little bit of a restrained episode, putting focus on the Fitz-Simmons characters rather than a super powered foe, that has more hits than misses. Despit the first act being rather slow, it did pick up the pace in the middle and led to an exciting ending that, though a little cheesy, worked enough to actually get us more emotionally involved with Fitz-Simmons. However, I cant help but think that if we were more emotionally involved with these characters in the first place this episode would have packed much more of a punch.
Coulson still gets the best lines and his emotional journey continues to be heart of the show, which is for the better as it takes away from campy dialog of Skye and Ward. While not the best episode, the show has found its footing and I will be looking forward to see what is comming next.
Easter Eggs and MCUbuilding
We got a little bit more information on the clean up of the Battle of New York, the fact that S.H.I.E.L.D. was on the ground with fire crews and such.
The theme of leftover Alien technology retrieved after the Battle of New York seems to be a focus of the series, and the only part of the episode that could be connected to the larger story. While the helmet seemed like an organic nod to the Avengers, the show still the continues to add in name drops that seem out of place; but i must applaud the writers for continually managing to find a new way for Coulson to say he got stabbed each week.
Slingshot, Fridge... and Now the Sandbox (in the Desert no less), and with the Hub coming up I think we can expect lots more of these aply named S.H.I.E.L.D. outposts.
Did you guy notice anything I missed? Let me know in the comments below.
Unfortunately, i will be out of the country for the next few episodes, so when i return i will try to post a bumper edition to catch up on what I've missed... and with the return of Agent Sitwell and a Thor: The Dark World tie-in these could be interesting episodes.
