Marvel's AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Producers Say To Think X-FILES

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen says the Agent Coulson led show has similar vibe to past fan favorite scifi show, X-Files. The duo also hint at otherworldly threats Coulson's crew will face.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. otherowrldy threats
We've seen a lot of footage, clips and interviews from Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as we draw closer to the show's September 24th premiere date. The good news is that all the footage has been from the pilot and there's 20-odd more episodes that follow thereafter. Speaking on what follows Whedon and Tancharoen discuss a few of the show's broader topics and goals. Said Tancharoen on the likelihood of a central villain in the first season, "I don't think we can't be too specific about that but yes, we will have..." - "Recurring elements," finished Whedon. The younger Whedon brother continued, "One of the things that, you know, we've talked about just initially getting into it is, as you start it, you want to tell these self-contained stories. It's a little bit like the "X-Files" model: You can come each week and see [that episode] and not have seen everything, but if you have, it's a richer experience. And as we move forward, those things will start to weave together more and more. But we do want to always have every episode have its own beginning, middle and end, and feel like its own [thing]."

The duo confirm that some of the season one threats will be otherworldly but also add that Coulson's team will be challenged from a wide array of sources. "They're going to come from all over the place," said Whedon. "It's not just otherworldly," added Tancharoen.

Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson's team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage; Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot and martial artist; Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer; and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker, Skye (Chloe Bennet).

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s first television series, is from executive producers Joss Whedon (Marvel's The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who co-wrote the pilot (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible's Sing-Along Blog). Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) also serve as executive producers. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television."

Otherworldly villains, sounds [frick]ing good to me!

Ugh this sucks.

I was hoping it wouldn't be so procedural. All of the best shows are serialized episodes that need to be watched in order, not "you can come in each week and not have seen everything".

The otherworldly villains do sound awesome though

Shorter seasons usually make for better shows, but I'm beyond pumped for this.

It already has better acting from the few clips I've seen than the CW show ;D

Actually, I much prefer the usual Whedon Episodic-with-season-long-story-arcs style, myself. Most of the massive continuity, serialized stories go off the rails easily or get really bogged down with poor pacing. Both styles can be done well or poorly, however.

This looks like No Ordinary Family to me but governmental... I'll give the first episode a shot, but if I don't see potential I aint sticking around, Whedon is usually hit n miss for me anyway...

Meh, nothing exciting about it so far, but I will igive it a chance though! Not quite sure how in the hell you can have a SHIELD show without Fury though!

You guys are truly unbelievable. A Marvel produced show with the potential to cover the entire Marvel Universe and you're bitching?

You must all be young - too young to remember a time without superheroes all over the media - and clearly spoilt beyond belief. This should be a cause for universal celebration amongst comic book fans (unless it turns out to suck - but until then...)

Shame.

@Godzillafart

I feel like its a bit easier to write one-shots for each episode. It's not easy to keep one story interesting for a whole season.

When it's done well though, the show can be amazing (Breaking Bad, Homeland, True Blood, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, etc)

@grif: Do those exist in the Marvel Universe? Then yes, they might. Along with other stuff that exists in the Marvel Universe. Potentially any and all of it. Please do let that sink in before you drown in your own negativity. It could just as well be called The Marvel Universe Show - because only SHIELD in the MU have the connectivity which will allow them to reach all the disparate areas the MU touches.

That's why a SHIELD show is a great idea. Any other show would be so much narrower in scope that it couldn't possibly have the scope or freedom that this will have.

I thought comics fans were known for their imaginations? Not all of them, clearly.

@jlabatman

Yeah when I was a noob I used to hate on Grif as well. He actually speaks the truth or at least his guts feeling in his comments.

As far as the show hmmmmmmm I am not sure how it will do. I will certainly give it a shot just like Arrow. One thing to keep in mind is how ABC is very quick to drop the axe on shows right away if the ratings are not there.

Firefly pulled it off, dont see why not.

However, with A:AoU, I no longer trust Whedon so it could easily disappoint.

Hopefully the comparison to x-files doesn't fall into the category of "nothing ever gets resolved".

Loved that show, but it was always Moonlighting with Aliens.
Lets get some character and story progression, please.

Cautiously optimistic. A lot of great shows start out in a procedural format. Hopefully it doesn't take long before it settles into the traditional Whedon format of rich season long storyarcs. In the meantime, I hope it's at least interesting on a weekly basis.
