MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

EPISODE: PILOT

REVIEW

Marvel's Agents of  S.H.I.E.L.D. is a Television series directed by non other than Joss Whedon (pictured below), who also directed Marvel's Avengers Assemble. He is widely known for his hit TV shows Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Dollhouse. Joss will definitely do a fantastic job with the future episodes. I only hope that for once one of his amazing shows is not cancelled after the first few seasons. But as far as I know only 3 episodes have been confirmed for AIR.

Back to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the whole idea of a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series is so simple yet also a great challenge. Joss has perfectly managed to be creative with his Pilot episode without creating anything too controversial with the rest of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).

Characters

I think I will start off  with Agent Phil Coulson who has been a part of each MARVEL film that was linked in with The Avengers. Now as many people who saw the film "Marvel's Avengers Assemble". Agent Phil Coulson was killed by Loki, Thor's adopted brother. His death was the single most significant event which made The Avengers team up together and take on Loki and the Chitauri army. Below is the clip in which Coulson was killed by Loki.

So now that's Coulson's background in the films covered now it is time for his role in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Phil Coulson is played by Clark Gregg. Gregg also plays Coulson in the "Ultimate Spider-Man" Disney XD Cartoon Series. Coulson as a character has essentially been brought back from the dead, but he thinks that he was dead for 30 seconds and spent a while recovering in Tahiti, when actually it turns out that that was not the case. We have not yet been told how he actually was brought back to life but we do know that the on board Physician knows the truth but has been told not to tell Coulson. Coulson is sort of the only member of his new team that has any known experience in the field, with the exception of Melinda May who has had experience but prefers a desk job. In the TV series Coulson takes on Nick Fury's role of organizing his team members and getting things done. He is strict but also very joking, like in Iron-Man 2 when he tells Stark that if he leaves the house he will taser him and let him drool into the carpet whilst he watches Super-Nanny. I can only imagine the secrets and hints into the other upcoming Marvel films we will see especially coming from Coulson who will most likely be involved. When Tony Stark finds out that Coulson is not actually dead he will either be really happy or really pissed off.

That's Coulson out of the way so now I think it is time for Melinda May played by Ming-Na Wen.Sadly I do not know anywhere near as much about Melinda than I do about Coulson, but from what I can tell she has some secrets of her own that we will most likely be finding out more about as the series progresses, and that she is a proven veteran Pilot and Soldier and that she was "damaged" during a previous combat experience. During the Pilot episode we only really see that she is professional about her job and really doesn't want to go back into the field, but will eventually with a bit of persuasion.

Now I will move on to Grant Ward played by Brett Dalton. Again as with Melinda May I know nothing about Grant Ward other than what I can gather from the TV show. My knowledge about him so far is that we know nothing about his early life and that he joined S.H.I.E.L.D. after "The Battle of New York". Grant is the exact opposite to Melinda because he is trying to get back into the field. He obviously does not play well with others but also has a soft spot for a pretty face. As is shown in the scene where Coulson injects him with "Truth Serum" and Sky is showing off her best bits to distract ward and make him lower his guard.

Three down three to go, I think I'll move on to Skye now. Skye is obviously an intelligent hacker but has some weaknesses, for instance thinking that S.H.I.E.L.D. are evil just because they cover up weird situations, and allowing S.H.I.E.L.D. to find her and gain her trust. She is a pretty face and most likely going to be who the series follows most..she may even become Coulson's student. Nothing is known of Skye not even in the Comic Universe, she has only had 4 appearances in the Earth 616 issues.

One more down two to go. Hm... I think I'm going to do Leo Fitz next. Leo Fitz is played by Iain De Caestecker. Fitz is a weapon/tech specialist and that is pretty much it. He and his coworker Jemma Simmons have a sort of sibling like relationship, although from what I understand from the TV show they will most likely both die together and say they love each other or end up in a proper relationship. Fitz is obviously shy and nerdy but he proves his courage by giving Ward a gun that shoots sleeping capsules instead of letting him use a sniper. He also proves his intelligence when showing off his gadgets in the bomb site and when he was creating ways to stop an explosion from occurring.

Finally the last character I am going to write about is Jemma Simmons played by Elizabeth Henstridge. Simmons is an expert Bio Chemist. As I said before she and Fitz have a sibling like relationship that will definitely develop. She shows her intelligence when it comes to finding out what "Centipide" is made of. I can't wait to see what situations Joss writes her into.

Now most people will disagree with me and say that this next character is not really a character but I know that Coulson would back me in saying that a good character to finish on is Lola. Lola is a red 1962 Chevrolet Corvette. It's number plate is 381 PCE which I am hoping will be relevant somewhere in future episodes. Lola is Agent Phil Coulson's. But unlike every other red 1962 Chevrolet Corvette she is tricked out with flying capabilities, GPS and much more. I hope she doesn't get blown up. I have a sneaking suspicion that Fury got Coulson Lola as a sort of Apology for getting blood on his VINTAGE Captain America Trading Cards.

Overall View

My overall view of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is that it is a fantastic show, but sadly I think it has some aspects which will make it get cancelled. I can only hope that whoever is in charge listens to Joss and just lets him do what he does best... write gold. I think that the fact that the TV series links in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-199999) is fantastic. It basically means that Joss can write things into the show that he either didn't have time for or wasn't allowed to do in The Avengers Assemble. The show is funny yet not silly at the same time, I would rate it 10 /10. Well that's all from me and I would also like to remind you all that non of this could have been possible without Stan Lee. So that's all from me for now...EXCELSIOR!

Excellent breakdown of the show and it's characters.

Now, where is @grif to call Agents of SHIELD a "sh¡+ show"?

For peeps who are curious about getting into AOS due to the second season praise but can't be bothered with having to watch the poor episodes here's a link to a watching guide for all the must-see stuff without the guff.

I would also add eps 11 and 14 to the above guide.
