DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Star Vincent D'Onofrio Offers Production Update; Says Show Will "Surprise Everyone"

After playing the character over three seasons of the now defunct Netflix Daredevil series, Vincent D'Onofrio returned as Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin, for Hawkeye, and will reprise the role for another face-off with Charlie Cox's Man Without Fear in Daredevil: Born Again.

We had heard that cameras were set to start rolling on the Disney+ show this week, but D'Onofrio has now provided a production update while responding to a fan on Twitter.

The Full Metal Jacket star said that while they are "definitely in deep glorious prep," they're "not quite shooting yet."

In a follow-up Tweet, he reiterated that Born Again is going to be "very different" to the Netflix series, adding that he believes it's "going to surprise everyone."

Plot details are still under wraps, but the show is expected to be at least partially inspired by the Born Again comic - although Cox did recently confirm that it will be far from a direct adaptation (which isn't too surprising given how dark that story gets).

The 18-episode series, which is being written and executive produced by Matt Corman and Chris Ord, will also star The Many Saints of Newark actor Michael Gandolfini, Colin Woodell (The Purge), and Nikki M. James (The Book of Mormon) in undisclosed roles.

Margarita Levieva (The Deuce) and Sandrine Holt (American Gigolo) are set to play "major roles" (likely the leads' love interests). Alaqua Cox is also expected to appear as Echo, but that's yet to be confirmed.

No official premiere date has been announced, but based on what we've heard, Fall 2024 seems likely.

They did Kingpin dirty in Hawkeye. I don't really love the whole "Kingpin got shot in the face and now he's going to wear an eyepatch" idea.

I'm still excited to see how this project develops tho. Cox killed it in SH.

@Tonic24k - that's the part that bothered you? Think it lines up with him taking explosions to the chest which he gets to walk away from.

Now that's something I didn't like. I know he can take a beating, but he's so much more menacing knowing he's not an unkillable juggernaut and instead has to rely on cunning and dexterity.

@Tonic24k - I feel like him getting beat up by Kate was more insulting. She really should have just barely escaped with her life.

@bkmeijer1 - I like Kingpin being a bit more larger than life. He needs to be intimidating and almost feel as if he has powers. Otherwise, he is just one of the many evil businessmen in comic books.

@mountainman - I seem to remember it being Kate getting the snot shit beat out of her and only getting the upper hand by literally letting off the entirety of Hawkeye’s arsenal at once.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/9/2023, 9:29 AM
@mountainman - I get that. Just think he's far more intimidating without being such a juggernaut.

Knowing he's near unbeatable, means the writers have to come up with some contrived way to beat him. Just takes away all stakes imo.

@bkmeijer1 - That's ONE thing that bothered me. But yes, I agree with what you mentioned as well.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 2/9/2023, 9:45 AM
@mountainman - I mean yeah. The specific thing I mentioned was just one way they did him dirty. I really liked how they handled his character up to that point. Then it was like, "why"? You just introduced this badass--which was a crazy reveal--then minimized him to a disposable thug. They should've ended the show with him still looming in the shadows running the show.

@bkmeijer1 - Come to think of it, many of the characters in the Hawkeye series should have ended up in the hospital or dead, but walked away from their attacks.

But this actually happens in many of the movies and series (I've noticed) and serms to be normal. Granted, some are less believable than others, but it's normal. I'm not excusing it, but just stating that it seems to be the norm.

@Tonic24k - It's temporary, and from the comics.

@LSHF - A lot of fictional characters including comic book heroes would be sidelined in concussion protocol like Tua and wind up l with early dementia like Jim McMahon. I am willing to suspend disbelief, though. 😉
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/9/2023, 10:23 AM
@LSHF - it's definitely happening more and more often, and it just leads to me losing interest.

That's why I hope Sentry won't be the Thunderbolts villain. There is such an exponential difference in power levels that he really can only be defeated by the push of a conveniently placed magic red button.

@mountainman - I didn't have a problem with her beating him as she did it with a trick and that's not an uncommon trope. However, no way she should have gotten up after that last punch but she walks off with barely a scratch.

How much better would it have been if she got seriously injured but still wanted to continue on the hero route
LSHF
LSHF - 2/9/2023, 1:12 PM
@RolandD - Same. Doesn't this also happen in the comics?
LSHF
LSHF - 2/9/2023, 1:21 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I had to stop thinking about it from the very first MCU films, Iron Man.

Tony, in his Mach 1, flew up high and then fell several stories and landed on the sand in a metal suit, and walked away with an injured arm That's it.
There was nothing in the armor suit that would have protected his body from this.

I mean, it was made clear in the first film what to expect in terms of realism in what the human body can take. So, this is the norm.
LSHF
LSHF - 2/9/2023, 1:23 PM
@bkmeijer1 - But I understand what you are saying. I just don't expect realism from these films in this way.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/9/2023, 2:30 PM
@LSHF - that's a fair point. The instant stop should've turned all his organs into mush.

That said, I don't think I'm at your suspension of disbelieve level yet. I am more willing to accept a sudden stop than an explostion to the face currently.

Tonic24k

@The1st - I know it's from the comics. I believe it's part of an Echo run. Or maybe just an Echo arc in a Daredevil comic. I don't quite recall. But yeah, I hope it's temporary.

Most excited for the legal aspects. They've got 4 former lawyers on the writing staff which is great.

Would love to see more of Daredevil being a reactive/proactive to Matt the lawyer and what evils he encounters in the legal system. His two roles intersecting more.

These generic press quotes really don’t do much for me.

I am cautiously optimistic about this. Feige has to know how much the Netflix series was loved. A different tone is fine. Toning down the violence a little is fine. But I sure hope that this has the awesome character work and the interesting philosophy discussions that the Netflix show, and Daredevil in general, have been known for.

There were a couple of good Daredevil moments in She-Hulk, sadly they were broken by him being made to look like an idiot. Its a new show and probably wont have the same tone as She Hulk (please God!) but that alone doesn't give me confidence
