EXCLUSIVE: Deborah Ann Woll Reflects On The Shocking Cancellations Of DAREDEVIL & THE PUNISHER

It's been a few months since Netflix made the shocking and wildly unpopular decision to ax all of their Marvel shows, and in my recent chat with Deborah Ann Woll, she reflected on the last few months.

One of the unfortunate casualties of Thanos' snap last year were Netflix's five Marvel series, and while some cancelations weren't exactly the most surprising (Luke Cage, Iron Fist), the others (Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones) sent shockwaves across the interwebs as fans fell victim to some corporate repositioning with Netflix seemingly cutting ties with anything and everything Disney ahead of the launch of the House of Mouse's own streaming service, Disney+, this fall.

With the dust having now settled and the cast and crew moving on to new projects, I was recently granted an exclusive opportunity to sit down with Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil, The Punisher, The Defenders), who played Karen Page, to get her thoughts on the surprising turn of events, especially after that exceptionally strong third season of Daredevil.

ROHAN: I just wanted to start out by saying that I thought Daredevil season three was one of the best seasons of television I'd ever seen and I also really loved the most recent season of The Punisher.

It's been a few months since Netflix made the decision to ax all of their Marvel series and now that the dust has settled, I just wanted to get your thoughts on what happened and whether or not you'd heard anything about the future?

DEBORAH ANN WOLL: I was sad when it happened, more because I just didn't know it was coming. Normally, you'd say goodbye and get people's email addresses and you'd maybe steal something from the set, but because we had a really strong final season, we were all pretty sure we were coming back, but then when we saw Luke Cage and Iron Fist go, we started to think maybe it was 50/50 and then when they let us go, I thought,'Oh, they're going in another direction.'

They're going to put their energy into something else and I'm going to start focusing on doing that as well. I've heard absolutely nothing about resurrecting it in any way and I think the chances of that are pretty slim.

For me, in my kind of grieving, and moving on from this experience, I have to kind of do that and I kind of need to say "Wow, I'm so grateful that I had this opportunity and I got to meet these wonderful people and play this amazing part and now, I'm going to do something else and put my energy somewhere else. Daredevil is going to be this beautiful memory rather than a frustrating memory by hanging on to it. I'm kind of pushing through, so I had to take a step away from it all just for my own mental health. I'm trying to live in a grateful place and a warm, thankful, place

ROHAN: I remember, at the time, Daredevil's cancelation was one of the most shocking things I'd seen, especially after that season you guys just had. It was just a huge gut punch to see it go down like that.

DEBORAH: Aw, thanks. I'll say this though, usually you get canceled because you suck and in a way, it's a really nice thing to get cancelled at the height of our powers, to really go out and say that was strong rather than do three more seasons that people are like "Eh, I wish it were more like season three," so maybe there's a silver lining to it all.

ROHAN: I know Season 4 had been pitched prior to the series being canceled, had you heard anything about where a potential season would've taken Karen Page? The show did wrap up really well, which was nice, but then it also had the cliffhanger tease of Nelson, Mudock, and Page moving forward and then, Bullseye.

DEBORAH: I know that Erik had a lot of ideas about that, but I don't know any specifics or anything like that, but I trust Erik. I think Erik Oleson is a tremendous showrunner and a great writer and knows how to assemble a good team. It would've been really good.

Sounds like the cancellation(s) really affected her on a personal and emotional level. Real shame about this entire situation.
