David Slade has signed up to direct the first two episodes of the upcoming series Powers, based on the graphic novel of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. Perhaps best known for the movies 30 Days of Night and The Twighlight Saga: Eclipse, Slade also has some pedigree in television having directed episodes of NBC's Hannibal and AMC's Breaking Bad.

Set in a world where superpowers are abundant, Powers follows the story of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim,  whose job it is to protect the normal folk from people with superhuman abilities or 'Powers' as they are known.

Slade will direct the first two episodes of the series which have been penned by Charlie Huston (The Smoking Gun Presents: World’s Dumbest) and both will executively produce. The series is exclusive to Sony Playstation Network and is set to premiere in December.

Powers is produced by Sony Pictures TV. Circle of Confusion, Bendis, Oeming and Michael Dinner also will executive produce with Huston and Remi Aubuchon (Falling Skies), along with Circle of Confusion’s David Engel, David Alpert and Lawrence Mattis. Huston and Aubuchon will serve as showrunners. SPT will sell internationally

Is the graphic novel worth getting? I don't usually like Bendis' stuff.

The original POWERS series from Image Comics has explicit nudity & some ultra violence.
I don't know how the book continued after it left Image. Hope the live action stuff represents that original work.

I enjoyed 30 Days Of Night, hope this director can make some good episodes.
Bendis is a decent writer, wonder how much input he will get to put into the show?

Nova- I'm not a Bendis fan, either. I mean, I could give you the rundown of the problems that I have with his writing.. but I'm not big on dwelling on stuff I don't like. Now, having said that- I love Powers.

It's like.. if a police procedural got together with your traditional flights n' tights story and shagged, then had a baby and gave it one of 'em pretentious, bullshit names that all the celebrities are so bloody fond of calling their offspring.

I mean, it's self-aware, y'know? It's just so darkly hilarious.

Powers was amazing back before Marvel gave Bendis the keys to the kingdom and he went mad with power.

A lot of people never gave Powers a shot because of Oeming's animation-style linework. But the art let them get away with some truly dark shit.

Anyway... I fully expect every drop of humor to get drained from the book by the time we get to see the show.
