ARMY OF THIEVES Trailer Reveals What We Can Expect From Matthias Schweighöfer's ARMY OF THE DEAD Prequel

Matthias Schweighöfer returns as Army of the Dead's Ludwig Dieter in Netflix's Army of the Dead prequel, Army of Thieves, and we now have the first trailer for the movie. Check it out after the jump...

Army of the Dead introduced us to a lot of different characters, including Matthias Schweighöfer's safecracker, Ludwig Dieter. Even before the movie was released, we knew he would be getting his own prequel, and that made the way Dieter's story ended all the more surprising and disappointing.

Still, the zombie-less Army of Thieves will shed a little more light on what led to this character joining that crew in Las Vegas, and we now have the first trailer for the movie.

"In this prequel to Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead, small-town bank teller Dieter gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals," reads the synopsis for Army of Thieves, "attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe."

As well as starring, Schweighöfer directs the movie from a screenplay by Shay Hatten, based on a story by Zack Snyder and Shay Hatten.

The rest of the cast includes Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, and Jonathan Cohen, while Army of Thieves is currently eyeing a Fall 2021 release on Netflix (despite this trailer's release, the streamer has yet to share an official date).

Glad to see my boy Guz Khan having his star continue to rise.

From a teacher in Birmingham, to stand up comic, to having his own show in Man Like Mobeen, and now another movie.

If this time around the actual mission is cracking the safe, this might actually be fun

Looks better than Zacks movie. Maybe Snyder should just produce and consult on projects.

The most annoying and useless character from the movie? No, thank you.

I mean, the safe owner couldn't just give them the safe code?

@Jaspion - The safe owner didn't care about the safe. It was all a cover. He really wanted the zombie head. He purposely didn't give them the safe code in case they did manage to get that far it would slow them down trying to open it while his inside guy made off with the head.

@CorndogBurglar - but why didn't he just tell the team to get zombie head, and if they got the time just crack the safe (or even just open it with the code)? It would've been the same movie, just a little more logical
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/26/2021, 4:42 AM
@bkmeijer - Oh I agree. But maybe he was afraid the team wouldn't be cool with bringing him a zombie head? Because nothing good can come from that, right? He was able to convince them to go in there because they thought they were getting a cut of the money.

@CorndogBurglar - yeah thats true. Still, 200 million potential pay-out must be enough to sway opinion right? Especially considering their motives weren't all that strong to begin with
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/26/2021, 7:03 AM
@bkmeijer - Thats the thing though. He never wanted them to get the money. And the first opportunity they had to get the head was when they first go to the city and the queen approached them. If they had taken the head right then, they could have turned around and ran. And most of them would have likely made it out because they weren't that far from the entrance.

So if they couldn't get the money, he would have had to pay them out of pocket, or kill them. Remember, he didn't want any of them to survive. Except his inside guy of course.

@CorndogBurglar - what I meant was that the mission could've been ''get the queen's head, and if you have the time, here's the code and the location of the vault and anything you take from it is yours''. And still just sent the inside guy along to kill them all.

Their payout is in the vault, so it's up to them if they would end going to the vault or not and get the money. Could've even given the zombies a reason to go after them if they already took the queen's head.

I'm just saying, there could've been different ways of getting everyone the thing they wanted without eloborate cover-ups.

@bkmeijer - Yeah I agree. And the movie definitely had its flaws lol. I don't mean to defend it like it's some masterpiece.

@CorndogBurglar - definitely did have it's flaws (most of which boil down to Snyder's approach of ''what if this happens, and then this, and then this, and then and then etc.'')

And I got that you weren't defending it since it was more directed at my suggestions. Kinda wanna meet a strong Snyder-defender one day though.

If this has nothing to do with zombies or what happened in Army of the Dead, and its just a separate story then I'm not sure I see the point. It looks entertaining enough, but I don't know if I'll watch it.

That first movie had such a fun concept and was terrible. What a waste.

It's a shame that the "everybody dies" trope was used in this movie. Because quite honestly I enjoyed the HELL outta Dieter and Vanderohe. I would have liked to have seen them BOTH live, even if in a "Zombie King" and his "Zombie Prince" kind of a way. (Vanderohe the King, Dieter his prince.) Yeah, I kinda shipped them near the end. So what? And while AotD definitely had its share of plot holes you could drive a mack truck through, it was a fun movie. I enjoyed my 2+ hours watching it and didn't want that time back at the end.

Looks kinda cool, Dieter was pretty he most interesting character in Army so if this delivers more fully on the Heist Movie side of things I think it could be fun. I’m looking more forward to the anime series and a sequel personally but this could be cool

I feel like the first film was such a wasted opportunity of a premise. You have $600mm sitting in a bank vault, that's the only set up you need. It would have been great to watch a heist after that. What's interesting about the set up is that the tricks and tactics you use to make it through the army to the city simply don't work on Zombies. There was such a great set up and then everything interesting was just stripped away.
