COWBOY BEBOP "The Lost Session" Serves As A Stylish Introduction To The Netflix Adaptation's Leads

Netflix promised Cowboy Bebop fans a special surprise today, and it's now arrived in the form of a teaser video.

The "Lost Seassion" gives us a first look at bounty-hunting heroes Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) in action as they take down some targets... while taking a short break for noodles, of course. Amid the chaotic marial arts and gunplay, we also catch a glimpse of the villainous Vicious (Alex Hassell), a ruthless assassin from Spike's past.

The first trailer won't arrive until next week, but this promo serves as a stylish introduction to the show and its affable leads, while also brilliantly recapturing the vibe of the original anime.

"Cowboy Bebop is an action-packed space Western about three bounty hunters, aka cowboys, all trying to outrun the past. As different as they are deadly, Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) form a scrappy, snarky crew ready to hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals — for the right price. But they can only kick and quip their way out of so many scuffles before their pasts finally catch up with them."

We recently learned that anime composer Yoka Kano, who has worked on the likes of Vision of Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex, Turn A Gundam, Macross Plus, and more, created the soundtrack.

Cowboy Bebop is exec produced and written by Christopher Yost (Thor), who also serves as showrunner along with Andre Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio; Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios; Yasuo Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozaki, and Shin Sasaki of Sunrise Inc. Watanabe is on board as a consultant.

Creative. Reminds me of high quality fan made stuff though, not that that’s any slight on those videos.

As someone who hasn't seen the anime this look great. In fact it makes me want to watch the anime.

@JoeInTheBox @BlackBeltJones not in the States so can't watch it on hulu. But I just watched the first 2 episodes and I think I love this show haha.

So far my favorite things about this show are the soundtrack and the fact that while spike is a "cool" character he actually sucks at his job and doesn't get any bounties

@Mrcool210 - the villains are often the best part.

Also, be on the lookout for Jet’s police backstory episode. My favorite of the series depending on the day.

I guess I’m the only person that’s not a fan of the goofball “speed racer” over the top style they seem to be going for… I’ll still be checking this out but I could see that getting annoying after a while.
Also not a fan of Harold playing Spike, not sure if it’s from the unnatural look he has during fight scenes or just his acting trying to be a tough guy. But Cowboy Bebop is still one of my favorite Anime shows and I’ll still give this a chance to grow on me.

@slickrickdesigns - I agree its an odd style. But with Speed Racer it worked in my opinion. Just for how crazy it is (and also because of the story) it really is one of my favorite movies ever

@bkmeijer - I liked Speed Racer because it resembled the cartoon… I don’t recall Cowboy Bebop looking like that… maybe I just haven’t seen the show in so long I forgot.

@slickrickdesigns - I haven't seen Cowboy Bebop so I can't say. I do like it though. Just hope the whole show isn't like this (I assume this is an exaggerated, compressed impression)

I have no idea what's its all about and have no connection to the anima, but its definitely in top 5 shows I look forward to watching the rest of the year (together with Hawkeye, Y: The Last Man, Dopesick and The Witcher)

I was excited for this before but now they're giving SPEED RACER vibes which is exactly what I needed to get even more hyped

Hm. Ok. I'm glad I watched this. Now I know ow to adjust my expectations for a goofier take that's probably just gonna be fun and not something to take to seriously. This has a very very different tone. They all seem... too energetic. There is a lethargic noir quality to the show, very slow and almost depressive during the down times. Spike, Jett and Faye often speak in a grumble or tired tone. It's not usually until they are actually engaging in something that they kinda click into this sharp mindset and they talk with a bit more pep... but they never sound like hyped up anime characters like the actors are doing.

This definitely has Speed Racer vibes more than Sin City vibes. I was hoping for more Sin City, tone wise. That slow depressive noir feel, not whatever this is.

Still this looks fun and I'm gonna try to appreciate it for what it's going for rather than my expectation. It's just harder with it being an existing property.
