The first trailer for Zack Snyder's sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon, debuted during Gamescom today, and Netflix (via SFFGazette.com) has now officially released the footage online.

We've come to expect stunning visuals from the Justice League filmmaker, but what we see in this first teaser for his Seven Samurai-inspired space opera really does take things to a whole new level, with some incredible action, weird and wonderful alien creatures, and Jena Malone as a giant spider-lady!

Snyder initially envisioned this story as a Star Wars movie, and it does show.  But even if it doesn't boast the most original premise, if Rebel Moon is even half as Insanely entertaining as it looks, we're in for a treat.

“They’re all misfits,” Snyder said of his team of freedom fighters. “They’re all healing and finding a place to belong. It’s a movie about finding a family. That’s really at the heart of the movie in a lot of ways: Kora finding a place to call home, something that she wants to protect.”

Check out the trailer below, and let us know what you think.

From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, comes REBEL MOON, an epic science-fantasy event decades in the making. When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.

Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

The heroes of Rebel Moon are: Kora (Sofia Boutella), an Imperium deserter who leaves the peaceful Veldt to fight back; Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a mercenary pilot whose Tawau-Class freighter will prove invaluable to Kora’s quest; Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), a Veldt farmer who knows little of the galaxy outside of his small, quiet corner of the galaxy; General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), a hardened gladiator who once served the Imperium; Tarak (Staz Nair), a noble indentured servant who shares a bond with a flying creature called a Bennu; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a cyborg sword master whose mechanical hands allow her to wield molten-metal weapons; Darrian Bloodaxe (Ray Fisher), an insurgent who has been harrying the Imperium with guerilla attacks; and Milius (E. Duffy), a refugee who seeks justice for their home — a colony that has already fallen to the Mother World.

Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire hits Netflix on December 22. The sequel, Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, will debut on April 19, 2024.

And with this trailer, Snyder feels like Michael Bay for me.

@MosquitoFarmer -
Is that a good thing or not? Personally just get the vibe of Transformers: The Last Knight thanks to Anthony Hopkins narration. Mix that with that failed John Carter and an episode of the Mandalorian.

The stagecraft stuff they are doing is way too obvious and is taking me out of every shot they are using it for, if you look at the backgrounds at all you can tell how they filmed the shot with the wall behind.

The foreground aspects just don't match. The first shot with the horned/crowned being in the field for example, the crops don't decrease in size naturally, they are all a set size until it hits the stagecraft video wall and then they decrease, they've tried to hide it with a lense flare but it just looks really bad.

@Scarilian - It definitely looks unnatural but I don't mind. This gives kind of a "dreamy" effect, similar to 300 which I really liked. Snyder used to be one of my favorite directors before the catastrophe called BvS.

I guess, but I don't think that is the intention of the director. I think he just adopts new technology before it gets fully used/tested resulting in sometimes not fully understanding how to shoot it to make it look realistic. His visual style often is enough to carry his directing, but in this case I just can't look past the technology not being utilized properly.

Usual Snyder pablum- liberal helping of slomo, lens flare and jarring CGI. That trailer ain’t moving the needle. Pass.

Was hoping for a more interesting story. it looks to be the same old rich = evil oppressors, poor = good rebels. can they change it up a little?
