See Yusuke Fire A Spirit Gun In First YUYU HAKUSHO Trailer, Will It Be Another ONE PIECE Or COWBOY BEBOP?

Netflix Geeked Week 2023 unleashed the first trailer for the live-action YuYu Hakusho TV series. Will the series be a hit like One Piece or a misstep like Cowboy Bebop or Death Note?

With its live-action One Piece adaptation, Netflix hit gold, and with its YuYu Hakusho adaption, it hopes to duplicate that success.

We have fresh poster art and the first teaser trailer thanks to Netflix's Geeked Week 2023.

Both glimpse of the series confirms the presence of the Toguro Brothers so it looks as if the adaptation might make it to The Dark Tournament arc of the manga/anime.

The footage also confirmed that the show will debut worldwide on December 14, 2023.

Fans of anime are already debating whether the adaptation could be another hit like One Piece or if the Strawhat adaptation was an outlier and viewers should expect another poor imitation, similar to Cowboy Beebop and Death Note.

Based on the first trailer, what do you think?  The show has an all-Japanese cast as opposed to the Westernized interpretations of Bebop and Death Note.

Yoshihiro Togashi (Hunter x Hunter) first wrote and illustrated YuYu Hakusho back in 1990. The series was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump and consists of 175 chapters collected in 19 volumes. As of 2022, the manga has over 78 million copies in circulation.

The manga really soared in popularity thanks to the release of a 1992 anime series from Studio Pierrot. The anime consisted of 112 episodes and more or less fully covered the entire manga series, a rarity in the genre. Oftentimes, anime series only tackle a portion of the manga series and serve more as a tool to boost manga sales.

Sho Tsukikawa (You Shine in the Moonlight) is directing from a script penned by Tatsurō Mishima (Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead).

The cast for the adaptation includes Takumi Kitamura (Let Me Eat Your Pancreas, Tokyo Revengers) as Yusuke Urameshi, Shuhei Uesugi (Followers) as Kuwabara, Jun Shison (Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day) as Kurama and Kanata Hongō (Shin Kamen Rider) as Hiei.

Additionally, Kotone Furukawa portrays Botan and Keita Machida (Alice in Borderland) plays Koenma.

In a bit of inspired casting, Meiko Kaji of Lady Snowblood fame portrays Genkai while Gô Ayano (Rage  The Snow White Murder Case) plays the indomitable YoungerToguro Brother.

The official series synopsis from Netflix reads, "The series follows Yusuke, a tearaway teenager who dies trying to save a young boy from being hit by a speeding car. As he looks down at his body from the afterlife, Yusuke meets a woman named Botan (Kotone Furukawa), who guides him to the spirit world. She tells Yusuke that his death was premature and unexpected, but that no one would’ve ever believed a troubled kid like him could perform such a selfless act — so there’s no place for him in heaven or hell. Yusuke is then given the opportunity to be revived after completing a trial, allowing him to be sent back to the human world to investigate demons as an Underworld Detective."

@dracula - It’s definitely one of my favorites, it was one of those more mature animes they premiered on adultswim next to Cowboy Bebop. I’d recommend giving it another shot.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this post one piece. That show was good, but still an all around downgrade from the anime I'd only recommend over the anime because of time commitment.

But one decent adaptation that's still a lesser version of the original doesn't suddenly mean this will be any good.

Doesn't look anywhere near as grand as One Piece but we'll see.

Watched the first season of the anime as a little kid and really loved it and just watched seasons 2-3 a year ago and while they were just okay it was still a solid enough watch.

This trailer captures the dark tone of the anime but something seems off…

Looks promising, although I think they’re introducing the Togoro Brothers way too soon, they should’ve done the Saint Beasts first.

@Gabimaru - best theme song of any anime ever. Even better then Head Cha La in my opinion.

The anime was amazing and I still rewatch episodes here or there. Especially the tournament arc stuff. This looks fine.

More lousy manga/anime.

I will never understand people's obsession with this.

Considering that this show appears to have no creative input from the original Manga's creator like there was for the live-action version of One Piece (which I'm not sure is even doable tbf since the creator of YYH: Yoshihiro Togashi is currently bedridden), I'm not expecting whole lot from this tbh :(

...Still might check it out if I hear it's good tho lol.

Yu Yu Hakusho is my second favorite anime only after the Dragon Ball franchise.

Yu Yu Hakusho has in my opinion the most bad ass theme song of any anime from my childhood. That shit thumps so hard.

There was a very charming esthetic to the anime which is completely absent here. And I'm sorry, I can't see Kuwabara as anything but a read headed curly haired chode. This looks dark and gritty but lacking that 80s charming esthetic.

Yuyu is HUGE BUSINESS here in Brazil. We love this anime since was aired in 90’s and the work of brazilian voice actors was amazing! They used to adapt lots of brazilians funny expressions! Its a great story.

Growing up YuYu Hakusho was my first favorite anime. I use too own all the graphic novels (until I sold them and I regret it). I am looking forward to seeing the Live Action YuYu Hakusho series. I think it's going to be great and awesome like One Piece
