Reports are coming in that Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, Mission: Impossible - Fallout) has been cast in the lead role of Geralt in Netflix's planned adaptation of The Witcher.

Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski's series of fantasy novels - which have since spawned a hugely popular video game franchise - focus on monster hunters known as Witchers who develop supernatural abilities at a young age. The main character is Geralt of Rivia (Cavill), a solitary Witcher who struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.

The 8-episode first season will be written by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (Daredevil, The Defenders, Umbrella Academy), who will also serve as executive producer and showrunner. Alik Sakharov (House of Cards, Game of Thrones) will helm a total of four episodes, while Alex Garcia Lopez (Luke Cage, Fear The Walking Dead) and Charlotte Brändström (Outlander, Counterpart) will direct two installments each.

A big fan of the property, Cavill previously expressed interest in this role, which meant that nobody actually expected him to land it!

The Witcher doesn't have an official premiere date yet, but we do know that it may not arrive until 2020.
