One could argue that Zack Snyder makes films that are so visually stunning even his most ardent critics have to concede that point to the divisive filmmaker. As such, news that Netflix is preparing to release Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire in theaters should please a lot of Snyder fans.

A 70mm theatrical run of the film will take place in four key international cities: New York, Los Angeles, London, and Toronto.

In New York, the film will be screening at the Paris Theater while Los Angeles residents will have to venture to the Egyptian Theatre to see the film on the big screen.

Internationally, Canadian fans will have the option of going to Toronto's TIFF Bell Lightbox cinema while those that reside in or near London can view the film at the Prince Charles Cinema.

Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire will be released by Netflix on December 22, 2023, and will be followed by Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver which drops on April 19, 2024.

It was also revealed that an animated Rebel Moon prequel is currently being worked on. This project joins plans for a prequel role-playing game on the Netflix Games platform, a live-action prequel TV series, podcast, and stop-motion comic book.

Speaking to Total Film Magazine, Snyder confirmed, "We’re doing a narrative podcast, and an animated comic book, and an animated series. They all take place before the events of the movie. So you can start to understand the vastness of the mythology that we’ve been working on."

Rebel Moon co-writer Kurt Johnstad added, "The world is very, very detailed and fleshed out. There’s hundreds and hundreds of pages of documents of methodology and mythology and lore. The timeline goes back 800 years, from our movies."

The Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire cast includes Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Darkness, Kingsman: The Secret Service) as Kora- the primary protagonist of the film, and Fra Fee (Hawkeye) as Regent Balisarius- the film's primary antagonist.

Also starring in the film are Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword), Michiel Huisman (World War Z, Game of Thrones), Djimon Hounsou (Shazam), Doona Bae (Jupiter Ascending, Cloud Atlas), Ray Fisher (Justice League), Cleopatra Coleman (The Last Man on Earth, Cobweb), Jena Malone (Sucker Punch, Neon Demon), Ed Skrein (Deadpool, Alita: Battle Angel), and Anthony Hopkins (Thor: Ragnarok, The Rite).

About Rebel Moon: When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

Netflix will suffice for this questionable film.

@UrbanTheEmcee - They have had some success with animation imo so we'll see what develops.

@The1st -

I just don't get the rush to franchise this film. Zack tends to put the cart before the horse all the time rather than wait for the reception to determine interest.

He's got a game, animated series, prequels, sequels already in the works and we have't even seen the film yet!

We already saw what happened to his Army of the Dead universe...but he's now saying it's part of Rebel Moon?? Huh? 🤔

Snyder suggests that the planned animated series is no longer moving forward at Netflix. Additionally, Snyder tells Total Film that “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” would've revealed that the franchise takes place in the same universe as Snyder's upcoming Rebel Moon.

How many "Zack universes" is he going to make then cancel? 😅

@Humperdink - That is why they love him. They like him like tossing and seeing what sticks I guess.

This has such a cool look, but it’s tough to trust Snyder. Sci-FI has really been popping off on streamers in recent years. Let’s see if this movie can do something besides just be pretty.

Netflix sure is putting a lot of stock in Snyder. Wonder how it's going with all those announced Army of the Dead spin-off, prequels and whatnots

@ReverseFlasher - guess there's that then. I don't visit the sister sites, so I had no idea it was already announced.

Also, the thumbnail for that article looks kinda AI-generated imo

If nothing else, the film will look fantastic. Snyder's sensibilities have always leaned more towards cinematography than writing.

He's a good idea man, but if he'd just let someone else write the screenplay, people would have a much stronger opinion of him as an artist. Seriously, watch some of the ones he wrote with the volume muted. Sounds like an insult, but it really highlights his eye for artistic shots.

Regardless, I'm usually fairly entertained by his movies, even the ones he writes. It feels like he makes the movies based on the shots in his head and then adds the dialogue in post.

@SheepishOne - His visuals are good and I do enjoy how he crafts action scenes. He just needs someone to hone him in when it comes to the story. Or just be a visual director

@SheepishOne - I think a great example is his Army of Dead film he wrote that I thought was freaking awful compared with his Dawn of the Dead movie written by James Gunn, which is probably my favorite horror movie ever made.

This is kind of aesthetics creatures i want in the recent star wars films. the newer films/series just lacks the imagination for creating some amazing alien looks.

800 pages of lore just for a Star wars knockoff classic Snyder
ReverseFlasher
ReverseFlasher - 11/8/2023, 10:11 AM
@Saga - get ready for all sorts of needless facts via dialogue… you dont write 800 pages of lore so you can stick to your tight plot.
