AHSOKA Season 2 Hasn't Been Greenlit At Lucasfilm Yet; Show's Future Hinges On Viewership Numbers

Since The Mandalorian launched alongside Disney+ in 2019, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have created their own corner of the Star Wars Universe which is now made up of multiple projects.

The Book of Boba Fett followed that series in the post-Return of the Jedi timeline (recently dubbed "The New Republic" era), while this year will see the launch of Skeleton Crew and Ahsoka. In the latter's case, we'll pick up with former Jedi Ahsoka Tano for a Star Wars Rebels sequel that should further lay the groundwork for Dave Filoni's upcoming movie.

That's going to serve as an epic crossover event - and perhaps conclusion - for these Star Wars TV shows, though we expect more seasons of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka to be released before then.

However, the latter's future is by no means set in stone.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com"a possible second season of Ahsoka...is not a given and would depend on the performance of the first season." We find it hard to imagine the show being anything other than a hit, but it will be crucial for Filoni to make it accessible to viewers without an encyclopedic knowledge of Rebels and The Clone Wars.

He's certainly assembled an impressive team of directors to work on the show, though, and that teaser trailer has received an overwhelmingly positive response thus far.

Set after the fall of the Empire, Ahsoka follows the former Jedi knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

In addition to lead star Rosario Dawson, the series features Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, and Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn. Ahsoka is written by Dave Filoni, who executive produces alongside Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson, and Carrie Beck. Karen Gilchrist is co-executive producer.

Ahsoka is set to debut exclusively on Disney+ in August 2023.

People have been waiting for a good live action Jedi story since 2005.

If they deliver, it will easily be a success.

I love Ahsoka, she's become one of my favorite characters and I was so excited to see her in Mando season 2. I won't be checking this out, Disney Star Wars pretty much sucks now so I assume this will be more of the same crap. They screwed over Kenobi and Boba and just about everything else now so F them! Lucas Star Wars forever!!!

@WarMonkey - Then Tony Gilroy comes into Disney like

And proceeds to show everyone how it should be done. And the best part about Andor is, Filoni can’t touch it. As long as they keep hiring artists like Gilroy there will still be hope for good Star Wars.

This show is easily my most anticipated SW project, with Filoni's movie coming close second. They need to oust Kennedy and let Filoni amd Favreau run the whole thing.

Wait, so the article says they will only make another season if the first one is successful???

Wow!! Thanks for letting us know Josh.

@DocSpock - It’s not always the case. Season 2 of Andor was picked up before the first season dropped. They could tell that was quality. If anything, this is telling us they don’t have a lot of faith in Ahsoka.

@BloopBlorp2 -

I think you are reading too much into it.

Andor was so popular as a direct pre-extention of a great movie. They knew what they had there, which makes it fairly unique.

They've hemorrhaged subscribers 24/7 myself included - this will not do numbers of ANY sort.

Boba Fett and Obi Wan killed any serious nostalgia viewership numbers and fans of the cartoons don't make up enough subs to bridge the gap.

RIP Star Wars

@Batmangina - I don’t get how anyone can watch Andor and still feel this way. I honestly feel like a kid again with the way it’s made me fall back in love with this world. I’m as obsessed with Andor as I was with Star Wars in general as a kid. As long as Disney keeps making a few shows of that quality, I couldn’t care less how many Kenobis and BobaFetts they make too. I ain’t watching for that crap anymore.

Of course, it'll get a second season, it's got a female lead.

Unpopular opinion: she acts NOTHING like ahsoka. She is rosario dawson playing herself as a jedi Master. I dig her strength and jedi swagger but that is not the ahsoka we know. Ahsoka effortlessly blends serious stoicism and lighthearted positivity. Thatis who she has always been ,even well into her 30’s/40’s in rebels.
Rosario Dawson looks like a cool jedi. She’s not Ahsoka.Never will be.

I wonder If this show will be the next The Book Of Boba Fett. Ppl were so excited with and loved the way Rodriguez directed his fan-made-ish return of Boba Fett only to royally fail in his own show. Filoni and company don't give me much faith after watching the Ahsoka trailer.
