AHSOKA Season 2 Is Currently Expected To Premiere Before Dave Filoni's STAR WARS Movie Is Released

While Lucasfilm's future plans for Ahsoka still haven't been revealed, a new report reveals the current plan is for season 2 to be released before Dave Filoni's planned Star Wars movie. Here's the latest!

Ahsoka didn't provide the definitive answers many fans hoped for, meaning we'll have to be patient when it comes to learning what Grand Admiral Thrawn has transported from Peridea. Oh, and the identity of the mysterious force which calls to Baylan Skoll (those are just two of many cliffhangers).

At the Star Wars Celebration event in April, it was confirmed Dave Filoni will helm a Star Wars movie bringing together characters from all the Disney+ TV shows.

While that seems like the natural next step for the story the Ahsoka showrunner is telling, there's currently an awful lot of story to cram into it. It's a good job then that all signs point to Ahsoka season 2 heading our way before that big screen crossover event.

According to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), "Some fans have speculated that Dave Filoni's standalone feature film...is poised to be next. However, we hear that Ahsoka season 2 is more of a reality in the conversation, but nothing is locked yet."

Unfortunately, it seems likely the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have slowed development on that front, meaning that while Ahsoka season 2 is likely, nothing is currently set in stone. However, based on some of the hints scattered throughout the finale, both James Mangold's and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's movies could also be tied to whatever Filoni has up his sleeve.

It would make sense all the sense in the Galaxy for the former to delve into the origins of the Force by revealing more about The Mortis Gods, while there are bound to be some lingering plot threads from this post-Return of the Jedi era which Rey can deal with (a lot of fans are convinced Grogu will make an appearance there).

In related news, Lucasfilm has just released one final trailer and a handful of spoiler stills for the Ahsoka finale which you can check out below.

Set after the fall of the Empire, Ahsoka follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

In addition to Rosario Dawson in the title role, the series stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, the late Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, David Tennant as Huyang, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn, and Eman Esfandi appearing as Ezra Bridger.

Ahsoka was written by Dave Filoni, who executive produces alongside Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson, and Carrie Beck. Directors include Filoni, Steph Green, Peter Ramsey, Jennifer Getzinger, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Rick Famuyiwa.

All episodes of Ahsoka are now streaming on Disney+.

Will it come out before Rian Johnson's Sta Wars Trilogy?
Urubrodi

@Forthas - Safe to assume that everything will come out before that.

@Urubrodi - I will periodically pose this question until Lucas and Johnson have the wear with all to acknowledge it.

While Filoni’s over there doing his bits, can we give Gilroy the keys to the Old Republic already? He’d turn that into some Game of Thrones level type of shit
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 10/5/2023, 8:17 AM
@FireandBlood - Gilroy is good but he's grounded approach to Star Wars is not what the Old Republic needs if anything it should be more "fantastical" than ever. Gilroy is good for things like Andor.

@FireandBlood - pointless nudity and a terrible ending?

Personally, I don't think Filoni has the juice.

@regularmovieguy - the finale was awful. Ezra Sabine emotional fallout handwaved. Thrawn in an incompetent escaped convict. Light switch Force upgrades. Ezra is a caricature. After episode 6 these last two EPS especially the finale were truly terrible. Superbly shallow contrived animation writing that makes Rebels feel DEEP.

@McMurdo

I couldn't get past episode 3 tbh. I didn't have any emotional investment in the story (never seen Rebels or Clone Wars) but it was just so bland to me.

My buddy and my older bro who has seen those shows liked it. I just couldn't get into it.

Filoni lost me when he introduced troopers that come back to life. Isn't that what drove Darth Vader to the dark side...some elusive ability to bring people back to life. All he had to do was ask Ahsoka.

FireandBlood

@Forthas -

But yeah, they didn’t bring them back to life. They just raised the dead, and the Nightsisters been doing that. There’s a really great episode of TCW where Grievous slaughters the Nightsisters of Dathomir on a campaign of genocide where he fights undead witches as well. TCW really added a hefty amount of lore to Star Wars that were only just seeing in live action now with these shows.

@FireandBlood - Do you know if including the ability to raise the dead in Star Wars was something that came from the expanded universe?
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 10/5/2023, 10:02 AM
@Forthas - It came from Lucas. He was involved in all the creative decisions for TCW. That’s the thing about Filoni. Everything he’s continuing on now, he already set up with Lucas years ago.

They better improve the writing or Season 2 is going to badly tank.

@Usernametaken - don’t worry about it man, the movie will only show the TV characters for 10 minutes in their own spin-off movie.

This fan fiction Star Wars is trash. Movie is never getting made.

Dave has to work on his action stating and set pieces a bit. Specifically, when its multiple combatants.
mountainman

A movie that will require dozens of hours of cartoons and several seasons of live action shows as homework before seeing it will not be a hit with the GA.

I’m sure people who have seen and enjoyed all these shows will be excited for this movie. But it’ll be very niche.

Blergh
Blergh - 10/5/2023, 9:28 AM
@mountainman - unless it’s properly set up
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 10/5/2023, 9:36 AM
@mountainman - Unless there’s a crawl, in which case it’s just another Star Wars movie with popular characters like the rest.

Never forget, most people that saw Avengers never saw even half of Phase 1. There’s a ton of context, backstory and so forth behind Episode 4, Episode 7 or even Rogue One, but they stood alone as movies regardless. There’s no reason to assume the same can’t be done here. The plot is simple; stop Thrawn, a ex-imperial turned warlord. Throw in Mando and a lightsaber, and the movie sells itself.
mountainman
mountainman - 10/5/2023, 9:45 AM
@FireandBlood - If they set it up properly then it’ll be fine. We haven’t really seen Star Wars shows impact the movies yet, so we don’t have any examples. I just think of Dr Strange MoM where a lot of the GA was confused why Wanda was bad because they hadn’t seen WandaVision. They don’t want to repeat that. I know personally I don’t plan on seeing Ashoka until after I’ve watched the cartoons, which likely won’t be for a while. I saw a number of reviews from people that hadn’t seen Clone Wars and Rebels that they felt that some context was missing from the show.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 10/5/2023, 10:00 AM
@mountainman - There’s about as much context missing from Ahsoka as there is from watching Episode 4 without seeing the prequels. People only bring it up because backstory exists in a visual form, but I wouldn’t let it hold you back because the animated shows aren’t required viewing for Ahsoka. There even a crawl that sets the board for viewers, just like the movies, and a whole episode that covers a lot of her back story.

If you want to watch anything, watch the last 3 episodes of Clone Wars. The thing about that show is, most arcs were self contained that created a bigger whole, but the last 3 episodes could’ve been its own animated movie, and gives some context as to why Ahsoka is the way she is now. But again, it’s not necessary to understand and enjoy the show.

Reginator - 10/5/2023, 11:03 AM
@mountainman - I have watched a few of the shows and have no interest in going to see a movie with those characters. The streaming episode framework is the best for non star wars fans that just want to see some scifi action and not have a huge investment in lore.
mountainman
mountainman - 10/5/2023, 11:40 AM
@FireandBlood - I’m sure I could keep up, but I actually like having full context. I’ve watched some of the big clone wars episodes, but not the final season at all.

I think I’m continuing to hold off. Not because it looks bad, i’m just not in the mood right now. The only Star Wars anything that I’m actually excited for right now is Andor S2.
Blergh
Blergh - 10/5/2023, 9:26 AM
I always feel like the naive kid with these D+ shows saying „I liked it“.

The show was fine, what did people expect?
It’s a solid 6/10 adventure show with a bunch of strengths and flaws but one that is still exciting.

Same goes for Obi-Wan, Mando and Andor (although that show is genuinely good).
It seems to me some people are expecting all these shows to be „Westworld“ S1.
The cynicism around SW is rough

@Blergh - There's a real pass/fail streak running through fan culture right now. Everything is either THE BEST THING EVER or THE WORST THING EVER, and rarely anything in between.

If Deadline's the source, then I'm willing to believe it. And it's not a weird assumption otherwise. The first theatrical movie will premiere in 2026, so that's ample time for another season.

My guess is we'll see The Mandalorian S4 in 2024, Ahsoka S2 in 2025, and finally the movie in 2026.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 10/5/2023, 2:21 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I'd bet that Filoni's Heir to the Empire (because, come on, you know they're going to call it that) will drop 2nd or third out of the announced movies. Wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see that until 2027-28. (also, [frick]ing weird to be living in the future, eh?)
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 10/5/2023, 2:34 PM
@ClintThaHamster - honestly, with all it's OT influences I wouldn't be surprised if it's the May 2026 movie. May the 4th to be precise.

The Dawn of the Jedi and the New Jedi Order movies feel more fitting for the December 2026 and 2027 release dates anyway. Especially the latter, as that has the opportunity to be both set 50 years after A New Hope and be released 50 years later.

@bkmeijer1 - "Especially the latter, as that has the opportunity to be both set 50 years after A New Hope and be released 50 years later."

Oh, yeah, I like that symmetry, that seems like an excellent opportunity to open up a new trilogy.

As for those release dates, man, there is NO way they're going to release three movies in two years after not releasing any for nearly a decade. I hope not, anyway.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 10/5/2023, 4:33 PM
@ClintThaHamster - it's definitely a weird slate, but I think it's a consequence of the strikes. It initially was alternating between Avatar and Star Wars movies each december, which worked a lot better imo.

I kinda want them to put Star Wars back in May altogether, but with Marvel also being part of Disney I doubt that'll happen. A summer release could still work though.

Clintthahamster - 10/5/2023, 5:14 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Oh man, yeah, I miss camping out on the sidewalk for the midnight show. Not that I would do that now because I'm 100 years old, but back in them days, that was part of the experience. Not something I'm about to do in December.

I haven't seen any one commenting this, for me it's clear after seeing one of the last shots what they're "transporting"... it is DEAD TROOPERS' CORPSES to be raised by the Mothers and create Thrawn's army...
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 10/5/2023, 2:22 PM
@Starlight - I hope that's not it, but you're probably right.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 10/5/2023, 2:35 PM
@Starlight - I guess that makes sense, seeing how Thrawn mentioned they had big losses. But on the other hand, why would he need regular corpses? There's more than enough of those back in the core Galaxy
Starlight
Starlight - 10/7/2023, 1:29 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I guess you need the ACTUAL corpses right there ready for raising... at this time, after the New Repubic taking over, I'd guess they've cleaned the battlefields out of dead people lying around... it's not like raising a 5 million old Dinosaur's remains...
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 10/7/2023, 5:44 PM
@Starlight - it does make sense he wants to keep his own guys, as those are probably loyal. Although we don't know how it actually works. Maybe any corpse is loyal to whoever resurrected them?
