LANDO: Ousted Showrunner Still Hasn't Heard From Disney After Learning Of His Firing On Social Media

When Lando was being developed as a TV series, Justin Simien was tapped as showrunner. However, after learning his services were no longer required on social media, he's talked more about the experience.

We first heard of plans for a Lando TV series way back in December 2020 during a Disney Investor Day. Lucasfilm surprised Star Wars fans who tuned in by revealing that Justin Simien would serve as showrunner on the project, with Donald Glover set to return as the iconic character after first playing him in Solo: A Star Wars Story

Unfortunately, no solid news about the show followed, and Glover has mostly dodged questions about whether he's going to reprise the role first made famous by Billy Dee Willaims.

As for Simien, the series was repeatedly brought up in interviews when he was doing the rounds to promote Disney's Haunted Mansion movie. Admitting that he'd heard nothing from them about the show since it was announced, the filmmaker said the studio told him they had to figure out everyone's availability.

Shortly after we covered those comments, it was revealed that Glover and his brother Stephen had taken charge of the project - which is now expected to be a movie - and that Simien had exited the project. The showrunner, however, said he learned of his apparent firing on social media!

Talking to The Wrap (via SFFGazette.com), he opened up on that experience and confirmed neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have reached out to him in the weeks since the news broke.

"It was the first time I had gotten any official confirmation at all about what was happening with [Lando]," Simien admits. "You'd certainly, like, hear rumors. It's a small town. Donald Glover and I have a lot of mutual friends. So I had some idea of possibilities of what might be happening and why we haven't heard from anybody."

"The good news is that I'm a huge fan - truly, genuinely of Donald Glover, and particularly the work that him and his brother do. So I'm also happy to just be a fan and watch it, and sort of get to experience it the way an audience would, because it's certainly what I wanted to see when I said yes to the project."

It's a shame to hear that not even Glover has spoken with Simien and the director went on to admit that, after reading about Guillermo del Toro's dashed hopes to make a Jabba the Hutt movie, he's in no rush to have his dreams crushed by Lucasfilm a second time.

"I don't know how it went [for del Toro] [but] I don't know why anybody would sign up for that again, to sort of like pour your heart and soul into something, and then to wait for several years, and then find out in an article that someone else is doing it. Yeah, I don't know if I want to do that again. That doesn't sound fun to me at all."

Lando doesn't have a release date and apparent big screen plans for what was once a Disney+ TV series have not been confirmed by Lucasfilm. As for Simien, Haunted Mansion didn't quite make the impact he or Disney had hoped for, and it's unclear what's next for him.

As always, you'll want to stay tuned to SFFGazette.com for the latest Star Wars updates.

I mean, feel how you want about the show runner or the property, but it's pretty [frick]ed up to let the man learn of his firing via the same method and timing as the rest of us.

@EskimoJ - Normal working class people are routinely laid off and fired via email these days.
Why should these Hollywood types be any different?

@EskimoJ - They did the same for Ant man's daughter from Endgame, the one who could actually act.

@Feralwookiee - the thing is Hollywood types shouldn't be different, but this practice should end, either to a Hollywood big guy or a newbie in an IT department. It's brutal and cold.

That's business.

@Feralwookiee - email is one thing. But never have I heard a company go on something like Twitter saying "yeah we fired Dave from accounting today".

I legit forgot they turned this into a film now. Don't know if it's that much better of a business decision than Solo tbh. But yea, I'm excited to see what the Glovers are cooking.

Also [frick] these damned companies they can't even fire people properly.

I've known a lot of people who worked with Disney, the usual feedback is "they'll [frick] you over at some point".

Good thing for Disney that there is always naive fresh talents to lure in.

If Glover got to see Haunted Mansion before it came out, this makes perfect sense. That film's direction is so awful, the comedic timing so off, it's just mind blowing how anyone in the edit room thought they had a good film on their hands. I wouldn't let that director touch any project I controlled...

@dinkdock1 - I thought it was ok. Maybe my expectations were very low. They wasted De Vito's talents though, such a small role for such an amazing actor.

Well if it makes Simien feel any better Donald Glover isn't going to make this show either. He'll eventually get dropped too, or leave for "creative differences".

Thanks goodness it died. Having this TV funny man playing a young Billy Dee Williams, who personified cool suave, is ridiculous.

Solo was indeed a horrible poorly written movie, but the 2 leads were as awful as possible trying to play 2 iconic actors from the 70s & 80s.

They somehow made that awful movie worse.
