Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first time Lucasfilm used de-ageing technology to make characters look as they did in the original trilogy, and the results were hit-and-miss.
The late Peter Cushing was resurrected as Grand Moff Tarkin, while Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia was also restored to her A New Hope appearance. Lucasfilm later tried recasting when Alden Ehrenreich was tapped to take over from Harrison Ford in Solo: A Star Wars Story but, again, the response from fans was mixed.
Now, a very interesting rumour is doing the rounds online (via SFFGazette.com) claiming that, at this April’s Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm will announce a new series of Disney+ short films featuring Han, Luke, and Leia.
This raises a lot of interesting questions, including whether Ford and Hamill will return to reprise their respective roles (the latter seems more likely than the former) and how Leia's return would be handled following Fisher's death. The technology is there to bring Leia back, but whether it should be used is another matter altogether.
Still, if this gives Ehrenreich another shot at Han, we'd certainly be down for that and there's always a chance these shorts will be animated.
The source of this rumour is Shaun O’Rourke, a "multi-talented professional with over 20 years of experience in the film industry." Supposedly, he’s worked with renowned companies such as HBO, CBS, Warner Bros., Disney, Lionsgate, Blumhouse, Amazon Studios, Hulu, and Netflix, so we can’t outright dismiss these claims.
Needless to say, we’re definitely intrigued to see whether these Star Wars shorts pan out and how Lucasfilm manages to pull them off. They stand a chance of filling in some big gaps in this Galaxy’s history with these, particularly in that mostly unexplored time between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
