Star Wars fans have been hoping to see a live-action TV series set in the galaxy far, far away for many years, and now it's finally going to happen.

Lucasfilm has announced that Iron Man director Jon Favreau is set to write and executive produce the project, which will debut on Disney's still untitled direct-to-consumer platform.

Official statements from Favreau and Kathleen Kennedy follow:

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

Favreau is thrilled to be returning to the Star Wars galaxy: “If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”

The report doesn't offer the slightest hint as to what the show will actually be about, but it's said that the last live-action Star Wars project to come close to development would have focused on the galaxy's the criminal underworld.

Now that Solo: A Star Wars Story seems to have that covered, it'll be very interesting to see which direction this series takes.

Was on the fence about the Disney/ABC subscription platform but now I am on board. I picture it being Game of Thrones in space!

Please oh please be set in the Old Republic. It has so much untapped potential and wouldn’t really interfere w the movies that much at all.

Hopefully it involves the Force and Jedi and Sith. Star Wars without that is kinda boring and generic imo
