Before Gina Carano destroyed her Hollywood career, the plan was for her The Mandalorian character, Cara Dune, to appear in both Rangers of the New Republic and her own spinoff series.
That's no longer happening (for obvious reasons), but a new rumour from LRM Online suggests Lucasfilm is planning to replace Dune with Hera Syndulla, a fan-favourite character from Star Wars Rebels.
At the end of the Disney XD series, Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren set off to find Ezra Bridger, while Hera continued to serve the Rebellion (alongside her son). The character has since appeared in the Star Wars: Squadrons video game, but Rangers of the New Republic would serve as a nice way of continuing her story while revealing what became of Hera post-Return of the Jedi.
It makes perfect sense to pick up with Hera again, and this will likely mean the series ties not only into The Mandalorian, but Ahsoka as well. If her son (Kanan Jarrus is his father) happens to be Force Sensitive, then we could get a whole new wrinkle that sets up stories for years to come.
As for Cara Dune, we don't know how she'll be written out of The Mandalorian, but it wouldn't be that surprising for her to be killed off screen. There will have to be some sort of explanation for her absence, though we shouldn't expect to learn more about that until the show's third season.
How would you feel about Hera making her live-action debut in Rangers of the New Republic?
