STAR WARS: RANGERS OF THE NEW REPUBLIC Disney+ Series Is No Longer In Active Development

Rangers of the New Republic was among the shows announced by Lucasfilm during last year's Disney Investor Day, but it's now been revealed that The Mandalorian spinoff is no longer in active development...

Last December, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced a new wave of live-action Star Wars TV shows coming to Disney+. News of The Acolyte, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lando, AhsokaThe Book of Boba Fett, and Rangers of the New Republic all got fans excited, especially as the latter three are set to spin out of the events of The Mandalorian

Since then, Gina Carano has been fired as Cara Dune due to her habit of sharing controversial political opinions on social media (anti-trans and anti-masking comments were the biggest issues).

She was expected to be the lead star of Rangers of the New Republic, but according to Variety, that series "is not currently in active development." That has to be a result of Dune no longer being part of the Star Wars Universe, especially as it's already been confirmed that there are no plans to recast the character.

The plan was for these spinoffs to culminate in a "storytelling event," so who knows what the apparent cancellation of this series means for whatever Lucasfilm was building to. It's possible The Mandalorian season three will introduce a new character who can take Dune's place, but it is hard to imagine the show working without her given the history she has with the Republic.

This is disappointing news, but was probably to be expected all things considered. Hopefully, this isn't a sign that Lucasfilm's small-screen projects will be as disorganised as its big-screen output!

The Book of Boba Fett is set to arrive on Disney+ this December.
