The Mandalorian's latest episode, "The Mines of Mandalore," takes Din Djarin and Grogu deep beneath the surface of their ancestral home where the former can finally bathe in the Living Waters and regain his Mandalorian status.

Thanks to a helping hand from Bo-Katan Kryze, Din makes it there and submerges himself in those waters. However, he's then pulled beneath the surface, prompting Bo-Katan to dive in and save him. As she swims into the murky depths, the warrior comes face to, well, eye with a massive creature.

Yes, the legendary Mythosaur is real and in the Living Waters beneath Mandalore!

That's where the episode ends, but this is a significant development. The Mythosaur skull is used as the symbol of the Mandalorian people, meaning it's a piece of imagery we know you'll be familiar with.

As Bo-Katan explains, the mines were once a Mythosaur lair, with Mandalore the Great believed to have tamed one of the beasts. She seems to dismiss all of that as folklore, but it lines up with what little we know about them. The Expanded Universe "Legends" canon might also offer a few more clues as to where this is heading.

In that, Mandalorians hunted the planet's once dominant species into extinction, but they became an important part of Mandalorian lore, with their bones used to create weapons. Legends canon also explained that these creatures were massive and the size of small cities, dwarfing even the Krayt Dragon.

Given the mythosaur's importance to Mandalorian culture, the fact one is still alive might be what unites them, with the Darksaber no longer as vital to that as we once thought. It also suggests that their planet can be saved, and we'd put money on either Din or Bo-Katan taming and riding this colossal beast at some point in season 3.

However, as this season has yet to establish a villain, we have no idea what might prompt them to do so...yet! However, the creature would once again make them a force to be reckoned with.

Man the VFX in The Mandalorian is definitely top tier. I wish Marvel Studios would take their VFX more serious and stop giving their workforce deadlines and last minute changes that contradict the concept art they're using for reference.

@SonOfAGif - in the defense (?) of MCU VFX teams: Mando 3 was shot right after Boba, which was shot in Dec 2021. So Mando had a lot more time in their pipeline.

MCU teams finish their shots days before release while Mando has ample time to iterate.

I know giving directors full power is a “good” thing but the way marvel does is outlandish. Leaving VFX teams at the whim of creatives that are never really sure what they want is bound to create mixed results and crunch

Grogu is the key to taming the Mythosaur alongside Din with the Darksaber. Thus, Din will be the new Mandalore the Great and his people will bow down to him.

@Repian - Then he’ll sacrifice himself to save the planet and / or Grogu…

That full stop “This is the way” he gave Bo after she told him how her father sacrificed himself while fighting to save the planet was peak foreshadowing…

@abd00bie - Whatever eventually ends up being the ultimate threat to the Mandalorian people / Grogu.

Moff Gideon, Tarken, First Order. Who knows at this point. It’ll come to a head and when it does he’ll lay down his life because “This is the way”…

@vegetaray - Tarkin died on the Death Star so I doubt it’s him.

@vegetaray - Though it would be nice to see Mando redeem the really bad digital Tarken in Rogue One, given how well they did Luke.

It would be very fitting if Bo-Katan would end up taming the beast and becoming the ruler of Mandalor again. She does have rite to the thrown so it would be a cool arc for her character. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think they've done anything like thrown rites and "royal" lineage in mainline Star Wars outside of the Mandolorian have they?

@RedFury - frankly, Bo-Katan is kind of a brat who sort of destroyed Mandalore in the first place. She has shown over and over to be power hungry and not a good leader.
Goldboink

@MrDandy -
Maybe that's her arc. She learns to earn it and not just take what was given to her.

@Goldboink - could be! I guess we will see
RedFury

@MrDandy @Goldboink - that's what I'm feeling. A redemption arc that turns her into the leader she needs to be. It's always nice to see people earn their destiny.

Plus I just don't really see Din leading the Mandalorians. It doesn't feel right to me. I like the direction his story is going with him building close family like connections, and how it's turning him into a better version of himself.

@RedFury -
I'm getting that general sense as well. He's not a leader and certainly not a ruler. I also noticed that Din Djarin still hadn't mastered the Darksaber and Bo-Katan wielded it like she owned it, which I think she does now by right. Din goes back to the Armorer, explains the situation, is redeemed and then told that he no longer controls the Darksaber and that is rightfully hers.

Mandalorians gather, big battle, Grogu crushes a bunch of skulls and helps tame the Mythosaur, end of season.

Does Bo-Katan have the right to the Darksaber now? The mechanical eye-thing totally defeated Din, and she in turn defeated it. Does that technically count?

@Kyos - I had the same thought, but I'm sure it has to be won in a duel against the person wielding it, though could be wrong

Why can’t mando and Bo-katan have a little sit down where they set up a “dual” where mando would make it look good but end the end throw the fight so he can give her the saber
NakedAvenger
NakedAvenger - 3/9/2023, 11:57 AM
@campblood - there's no honour in that. She can never rule with authority knowing she cheated her way to it. Even if she tried she will always doubt herself.
JonC

@campblood - you have to defeat them in combat but they don't say what weapon is required...
campblood
campblood - 3/10/2023, 5:28 PM
@JonC - exactly, I mean there has to be many ways to get the saber in her hands without a straight up dual to the death style fight

Mando desperately needs someone with him to lift the weight of exposition-heavy dialogue, and let it flow in a basic conversation. Better ep than the first ep (not difficult), far more focused and the reveal mentioned here was genuinely stirring, but still left a lot to be desired. Hope it picks up

I won't be surprised if Mando doesn't realize that his beliefs are not at clear cut as he thought and decides to embrace Bo Katan's beliefs where you can take off your helmet.

That way Pedro Pascal can act without his helmet on as he wants.
JonC

@TyrantBossMedia - i think the show would lose all appeal if he had his helmet off.
